Jacob Dahl Leads The Way With 26 Remaining

After the €5,300 Pot-Limit Omaha event crowned a winner on Wednesday night, there was already another chance for everyone unable to satisfy their four-card needs. A total of 206 players registered for the €1,650 Pot-Limit Omaha 6-max and just 26 remain after eight level of play. Jacob Dahl leads the way as they will play down to a final table tomorrow.

Like in any Pot-Limit Omaha tournament the action was also fast paced in the Majestic Barriere poker room. Andrew Lichtenberger got off to a great start, but that couldn't be said for players like defending champ Philippe Boucher, Fabrice Soulier and Antonio Esfandiari. All were eliminated in the first level, and many would follow suit.

John Monnette took care off Vanessa Selbst in the early levels as he took the chip lead going into the first break. Justin Bonomo trending in the same direction, but later in the day he could not get anything going. Monnette on the other hand managed to survive and will return tomorrow with 32,300 for his chance of cashing a third event at this year's World Series of Poker Europe.

One of the most entertaining hands of the day took place between four players. The numbers one and two of the 2005 WSOP Main Event, Joe Hachem and Steve Dannenmann, were both involved, just like Scott Seiver and Micah Smith. The latter took out all three players when he managed to hit runner-runner full house. Hachem was in front all the way to the turn, on which he had a full house, but his hand would not hold up. Smith survived Day 1 with 38,500.

Phil Ivey showed up very briefly for this event, and on the second hand after entering the tournament he busted to McLean Karr. Karr was looking very good at that point, but he would not make it to Day 2. Many other players entered late, among which a big contention of players who made it into the Sweet Sixteen in the €10,000 Mix Max. Nobody will have to worry about multi-tabling tomorrow, since none of them survived the first day of play.

Towards the end of the day pots grew bigger, and Daniel Negreanu got caught up in a very serious one. He could not beat John Eames' set, and eventually survived the day with 22,200. Eames bagged 43,100. Other notable survivors are Ana Marquez (58,200), Andrew Lichtenberger (63,900) and Dan Shak (24,800).

Twenty-one places will get paid, and that will be the first goal. Make sure to tune back into PokerNews tomorrow at 4:00 PM GMT when the remaining players will play down to six.

Sleepy Goyens Gets Away With Costly Mistake

David Benyamine showed compassion
David Benyamine showed compassion

David Benyamine has been chirpy and quite active over on Table 9. He just raised under the gun to 900 and two players called. Dries Goyens was in the small blind and three-bet to 4,500. Dan Shak folded his big blind, and the action was back on Benyamine.

Without hesitation Benyamine threw in a grey chip worth 5,000, and the two callers folded. Goyens thought he had won the hand, and threw his cards towards the muck.

The players at the table quickly reminded him Benyamine hadn't folded, and Goyens tried to retrieve his cards. One of Goyens' cards had hit the muck, and the dealer put her hands over the cards in order to keep them in place. The floor was called over.

"I hate this," Benyamine sighed as he felt bad for Goyens who had made an honest mistake.

All the other players at the table were very vocal about Goyens cards all being retrievable, and eventually he got all four back.

The flop brought out {4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{4-Spades}, and Benyamine threw his cards into the muck right away. After a few seconds of confusion Goyens received the pot, and he opted to show the {7-Spades}. Jason Mercier started laughing, and Benyamine could not keep a straight face either.

"I'm sorry," Goyens said abou the situation. "I should be sleeping more."

"It's alright, the only mistake you made was showing the seven," Benyamine replied with a smile after which he asked what Goyens had.

"I had a rundown, {7-}{8-}{9-}{10-}" Goyens said, and that had Benyamine smiling again. He later admitted to having had {8-}{9-}{10-}{J-}, and Goyens was drawing very slim pre flop. Things turned out differently, and Goyens took down the pot in a situation where he probably would've lost a very big percentage of the time due to his hand hitting the muck.

McDonald Eliminates Puchkov with King High

Mike McDonald
Mike McDonald

Three players limped and Mike "Timex" McDonald exercised his option in the big blind with a raise to 1,500. Two of the limpers made the call, and then Konstantin Puchkov opted to move all in from the small blind for 3,150. McDonald isolated by four-betting the pot.

Showdown
McDonald: {K-Clubs}{J-Spades}{10-Clubs}{6-Spades}
Puchkov: {J-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}

The board ran out a very uneventful {3-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}{4-Spades}{Q-Hearts} and McDonald won with his king high.

Smith Eliminates about 20MM Worth of Live Tournament Earnings

Joe Hachem and Steve Dennenmann at the same table again.
Joe Hachem and Steve Dennenmann at the same table again.

Joe Hachem, Steve Dannenmann and Scott Seiver have combined live tournament earnings exceeding $21,000,000, all that was worth nothing against Micah Smith just now.

After some a pre flop madness, during which both Seiver and Dannenmann ended up all in, it was Hachem who also put his money on the line when the flop showed {8-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. All were covered by Micah Smith, and the following 16 cards were turned over.

Showdown:
Joe Hachem: {A-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}
Micah Smith: {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Scott Seiver: {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}
Steve Dannenmann: {K-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{6-Spades}{5-Hearts}

Hachem had a set with the nut flush draw, Smith had a straight flush draw but Seiver also had diamonds. They were inferior, and helped Hachem's chances. Seiver had a gut shot while Dannenmann had even worse odds of winning.

The turn was the {10-Hearts} and Smith hit trips while Hachem made a full house. On the river the {A-Hearts} popped up, and Smith had backed himself into hitting a full house. Three players were eliminated, and Smith took the chip lead!

Are You Ready for Some High-Flying Six-Handed PLO Action?

Philippe Boucher won this very event last year.
Philippe Boucher won this very event last year.

The sixth annual World Series of Poker Europe continues today at the Casino Barrière in Cannes with the sixth of seven bracelet events, Event #6: €1,650 Six-Handed Pot-Limit Omaha. There's already been one PLO event and one six-handed event here at the WSOP Europe, but this marks the first time this year the two variations have been combined.

In 2011, six-handed PLO was introduced to the schedule and proved to be quite popular as 339 players took to the felt to battle it out for a €124,584 first-place prize. Many players put themselves into position for the title with deep runs including Roberto Romanello (31st-€2,616), Carlos Mortensen (€3,339), Ludovic Lacay (20th-€4,360), Antony Lellouche (12th-€7,629), Bryan Devonshire (8th-€13,948) and Jared Solomon (5th-€26,676), but it was Quebecer Philippe Boucher who defeated Michel Dattani in heads-up play to walk away the victor.

Today's event is expected to draw quite the stacked field, and we already know players like Justin Bonomo, Daniel Negreanu and Kevin MacPhee will be in action.

We'll kick things off in a little under in hour, and the plan for the day is to play eight levels. Join us then as we bring you all the high-octane action from the Event #6 floor at the elegant Majestic Barrière.
