Krakow Gifted a Double Up

Matan Krakow on Day 1a
Matan Krakow on Day 1a

Matan Krakow, who made final tables in back-to-back years at the World Series of Poker Europe, just found himself in a perfect spot. Tianna Nguyen raised under the gun to 11,000 and the action was folded to the Israeli on the button. Krakow was faced with a huge raise, but he decided to bump it up to 22,000.

Both blinds quickly folded after which Nguyen four-bet to 45,000, effectively putting Krakow all in. He called all in and quickly turned over {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}. Nguyen sat motionless for about three seconds before turning over her {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}.

The board ran out {5-Spades}{7-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{K-Spades}, and Krakow doubled up. He was all in for 39,600 and his Day 2 could not have started off better.

Hellmuth On Fire Early

With the flop reading {Q-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}, Ramin Hajiyev led out for 5,700. Jean-Noel Thorel called and Phil Hellmuth called as well.

The {8-Spades} fell on the turn and Hajiyev slowed down with a check. Thorel fired 12,000 and Hellmuth quickly called. Hajiyev folded and the two were heads up to fifth street.

They saw the {9-Diamonds} complete the board and Thorel fired one last bet of 24,000. Hellmuth flung out a call and showed {Q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}.

Thorel mucked his hand and Hellmuth rocketed up from his seat.

"White magic! That's what we call it, boys!" Hellmuth shouted as he dragged in his new chips.

Lichtenberger Runs Kings Into Aces

Vadzim Markushevski opened for 1,300 under the gun and picked up a caller in the hijack. Andrew Lichtenberger then three-bet to 4,000 from the cutoff, Markushevski four-bet 8,000, the hijack folded, and "Lucky Chewey" five-bet 34,000. Markushevski called off for 33,800 and the hands were tabled.

Showdown
Markushevski: {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}
Lichtenbegrer: {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}

Lichtenbegrer was on the wrong end of a brutal kings-versus-aces confrontation, and he would receive no reprieve as the board ran out an uneventful {3-Hearts}{J-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}.

Duhamel Busts Gerin, Then Battles with Frankland

Fung Cheung checked the {J-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{6-Clubs} flop before Rebecca Gerin bet 2,350. Jonathan Duhamel raised to 7,000, which knocked Cheung out of the hand. Gerin reraised all in for just about 27,000, and Duhamel snapped with the {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}. He was up against the {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts} for Gerin.

The turn was the {Q-Hearts} to give Duhamel the lead with a pair of queens. The river was the {3-Clubs} and improved Duhamel to a flush. He won the pot to bust Gerin from the event.

Shortly thereafter, Duhamel battled with Mathew Frankland in a blind-versus-blind confrontation that ended on the flop with Frankland's lead bet.

Action folded to Frankland in the small blind and he raised to an unknown amount. Duhamel reraised to 4,400 from the big blind, then Frankland fired back with a reraise to 10,325. Duhamel took his time, then made it 20,700 to go. Frankland opted to just call.

The flop came down {K-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}, and Frankland led for 17,300. He had 44,675 behind, and Duhamel went into the tank. After a couple minutes, Duhamel folded and was knocked back to 76,000.

Ivey Climbing

We found Eric Harris and Phil Ivey looking down at a board of {8-Diamonds}{A-Spades}{3-Hearts}{5-Clubs}. Harris checked to Ivey who fired out a bet of 5,000. Harris thought for a solid forty-five seconds before finally choosing to flat call. The river was the {K-Clubs} and Harris checked again. Ivey checked behind and Harris showed {J-Hearts}{8-Clubs} for a pair of eights.

Ivey tabled {A-Hearts}{7-Clubs} for a pair of aces and took down the pot.

Yannick Bonnet: {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}

The board ran out {K-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}, and Bonnet survived this all in for his tournament life.

The Defending Champ Surges

On our last pass by Table 11, we noticed that the defending champ, Elio Fox, had a lot more chips than he had when the day started. At the same time, a hand developed when Dominik Nitsche opened for 1,300 and Fox defended from the big blind.

The {A-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{4-Spades} flop saw Fox check-call a bet of 1,700 before checking the {5-Clubs} turn. Nitsche bet again, this time 1,700, but folded when Fox sprung to life with a check-raise to 4,800.

Fox is now sitting with over three times the chip average and is primed to make a deep run for the second year in a row.

Parekh Eliminated By Kohlberg

Curt Kohlberg and Amit Parekh got all the money in preflop with Parekh at risk for about 25,000. Kohlberg held the {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades} and Parekh the {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}.

On the {9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop, Parekh picked up a flush draw. The turn was the {4-Diamonds} and river the {J-Spades}, missing everything Parekh needed and eliminating him from the tournament.

Rousso Eliminated

With the board reading {5-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{3-Clubs}, Max Silver threw out five grey t5,000 chips, which was a bet that was enough to put Vanessa Rousso all in.

"Just like thirty more seconds, guys," said Rousso to her table while she pondered a decision.

"Queen-jack? You have like queen-jack? King-jack?" said Rousso before deciding to call for her tournament life.

Silver tabled {J-Clubs}{J-Spades}.

"Ah!" said Rousso. "Well I was right about the jack." She showed {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} for merely ace-high.

The river was the {8-Clubs} and Silver was able to send Rousso packing.

"Wow," Rousso lamented. "Bad read. Worst read."
