Australian Obst Leads Remaining 68 Players

Level 14 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
James Obst - Chip Leader
James Obst - Chip Leader

With 68 players remaining in the 2013 Aussie Millions Main Event, James Obst is the chip leader with 1,061,000 in chips. Obst is the only player in seven figures, but Scott Wilson won a massive pot during the last few minutes of play, and bagged 933,500 in chips.

Day 2 of the 2013 Aussie Millions Main Event began with 312 players, and the chip leader was Brian Payne. Payne entered the day with just under 300,000 chips, and quickly started to plummet down the counts. In one particular hand, Payne and Mark Teltscher took a flop of {7-Spades}{2-Hearts}{10-Clubs}. Payne led out for 4,000, and Teltscher made the call. The turn was the {q-Spades}, both players checked, and the {3-Spades} completed the board. Payne tossed out 6,000, and Teltscher moved all in for 20,000. Payne folded, leaving himself with under 200,000 chips. A few hours later, Payne was eliminated in unknown action.

Payne wasn’t the only notable to hit the rail during play on Day 2. Stephen Chidwick, Russell Thomas, Eoghan O’Dea, Nate Silver, Richard Yong, Paul Phua, Neil Channing, Eric Liu, Annette Obrestad and Joe Hachem were all eliminated.

Chidwick was eliminated in the last level of play with the {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} against the {K-Clubs}{K-Spades} of Ray Ellis. According to the PokerNews Odds Calculator, Ellis was a 69.61% favorite while Chidwick had a 29.60% chance of survival. The {2-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{2-Spades} flop dropped Chidwick's chances to 16.46%, while the {5-Hearts} turn cut it down to just 6.82%. Chidwick needed an ace on the river to keep his 2013 Aussie Millions Main Event hopes alive, but he would find no salvation as the useless {Q-Clubs} peeled off.

Silver, who appeared on the PokerNews Podcast earlier this week, had a roller coaster day, but the famous statistician was ultimately eliminated in the ultimate cooler scenario. Silver was all in and at risk preflop with two kings against Gary Benson’s two aces. Benson held, winning the 240,000-chip pot, while Silver hit the rail.

Among the survivors, no one was more aggressive than Obst, who rocketed up the counts. In one particular hand, he and Brandon Adams were heads up on a board of {2-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{3-Spades}. Obst checked, Adams bet 60,000 into a pot of around 80,000, and Obst check-raised all in for effectively 200,000. Adams quickly folded, and Obst raked in the pot.

There was a very interesting ruling made during the day that concerned Tan and Wong — who are openly in a relationship. Tan was moved to Wong’s table, and when she was, she requested a seat change. At Crown Casino, the staff tries to keep relatives and couples separated as much as possible for as long as possible to avoid collusion or other strange scenarios.

“When there’s two full tables left we’re not gonna re-seat players , because that would be unfair,” Tournament Director Christian Vaughn told PokerNews. “Personally, I think it would be good if we were able to split up players who have substantial stakes in each other, but that’s far more complicated."

Tan’s request was granted, and she moved to a separate table. Both players cruised for the remainder of the day, and both players ended the day with healthy stacks.

Another couple that the PokerNews Live Reporting Team had its eyes on were Phil Ivey and Patrik Antonius. Antonius was moved to Ivey’s table in the middle of the day, and the two controlled the table until it broke with less than 20 minutes to play in the seventh and final level. During one orbit of play, four hands were won by Antonius and two by Ivey. In one particular hand, Antonius three-bet Ivey, prompting the rail to lean in and gawk at the table. Ivey folded, allowing the spectators to finally exhale.

The two poker icons finished the day with solid stacks — Ivey with 390,500 and Antonius with 332,000.

The prize pool was announced during Day 2, and the 629 players generated a total purse of AU$6,290,000. The top 64 players will earn a minimum of AU$15,000, and the winner will take home AU$1,600,000 and a Chrysler 300C sports car.

2004 Champ Eliminated

Tony Bloom - Eliminated
Tony Bloom - Eliminated

Mervin Chan led out for a bet on a flop of {10-Spades}{4-Hearts}{4-Spades}, Tony Bloom moved all in for what looked like 73,000, and the action folded back to Chan, who called.

Chan: {a-Spades}{3-Spades}
Bloom: {10-Clubs}{9-Spades}

The turn was the {8-Spades}, giving Chan a flush, but Bloom could still double with a ten or four on the river.

The river was a repeat eight - the {8-Hearts} - however, and Bloom was eliminated.

Prior to busting, Bloom, who won the 2004 Aussie Millions Main Event, was seated next to Tyron Krost. Krost, who won in 2010, is now the only remaining champion.

Benson Ends Silver's Run

Level 13 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Nate Silver
Nate Silver

The most famous non professional poker player left in the event has just been knocked out. Nate Silver, who was on the PokerNews Podcast earlier this week, fell to Gary Benson when he ran pocket kings into aces. Silver, who started the hand with around 120,000 chips, ended up all in preflop and couldn't catch up with the Aussie.

For all you Silver fans out there you can still listen to the podcast we recorded with him right here.

Obst Nearing 700K

James Obst
James Obst

When we reached Table 29, James Obst and Brandon Adams were heads up on a board of {2-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{3-Spades}. Obst checked, and Adams slid forward 60,000 into a pot of around 80,000.

Obst tanked for a bit, then grabbed all of his brown T25,000 chips.

"All in."

The all-in bet was for effectively 200,000, and Adams opted not to risk his entire stack. He folded, and Obst is now up to 670,000 chips.

Ivey Doubles

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Phil Ivey

The crowd around one of the feature tables swarmed a bit closer. Seeing as it was Phil Ivey's table, we rushed to the scene to see what was happening. When we arrived, the dealer and floor staff were verifying Ivey's chip count at a little over 100,000 and taking it from the stack of Rajkumar Ramakrishnan.

Ivey's {K-}{Q-} was the only one displayed on the final {K-}{J-}{2-}{7-}{9-} board, and Ramakrishnan sent over the chips. When it was all said and done, Ivey stood with over 250,000, while Ramakrishnan was kicked back to 267,000.

Neilson Eliminates Raskin

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Micah Raskin on Day 1a.
Micah Raskin on Day 1a.

"All in and a call," we heard a dealer say from a table behind us. When we turned around we saw Micah Raskin was all in and at risk against Daniel Neilson.

A preflop raising way resulted in Raskin being all in for roughly 60,000 from the big blind with {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}, which was well behind the {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} Neilson held in the small blind. The {A-Spades}{4-Hearts}{7-Spades} flop paired both players, but Neilson's king kicker had him out in front. The {J-Clubs} turn meant Raskin needed a queen on the river to survive, but it wasn't in the cards as the useless {6-Diamonds} blanked.

Rusnak Doubles Through Silver

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Frank Rusnak doubles through Nate Silver
Frank Rusnak doubles through Nate Silver

When we reached the table, there was 22,400 laying in front of Frank Rusnak, who was in the big blind. Nate Silver, who was sitting in the hijack seat, had a re-raise of 60,000 in front of him. Rusnak made the call, and before the flop, Silver asked for a count. It didn't look like Rusnak answered, and if he did, Silver didn't hear him.

As the flop fell {q-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{6-Spades}, Silver stood up to examine Rusnak's stack. Rusnak checked.

"Okay," Silver said once he counted Rusnak's stack from afar. "I'm all in."

Rusnak snap-called the 80,300-chip bet, turning over {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} for top set. Silver tabled {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}.

The turn and river bricked {2-Hearts}, {5-Spades} respectively, and Rusnak doubled to around 285,000 chips. Silver took a hit, but is still quite healthy with 160,000.

Mercier Doubles Pustoslemsek Then Busts Next Hand

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

Dejan Pustoslemsek has been playing a patient game here on Day 2 even as his stack dwindled to just 9,500. Just before the break, he committed all his chips preflop holding the {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and was primed to double against Jason Mercier, who held the inferior {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}. The board ran out a clean {9-Clubs}{A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{A-Clubs} and Pustoslemsek doubled through Mercier, who was left with just 3,100.

In the very next hand, Mercier had to commit 1,000 from the big blind and watched a player in middle position raise to 4,700. Action folded around to the player in the small blind and he seemed interested. "There's no bounty," Mercier reminded him. The small blind, and entire table for that matter, got a good laugh from it.

Eventually the small blind folded and Mercier committed his stack with {9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. The middle-position player then tabled {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}. "I want to take it back," Mercier deadpanned. Unfortunately for him it was too late and his tournament came to an end after the board ran out {10-Spades}{Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{A-Hearts}.

Bringing the Payne for Day 2

Welcome back for Day 2 of the 2013 Aussie Millions Main Event. Today, the greatest tournament in the Southern Hemisphere will combine all survivors from the three starting days into one big party on the felt. Just about half of the field remains with 312 players, and Day 1a's Brian Payne holds the big lead with 299,900 in chips.

Payne is a local from Melbourne, and all five of his live tournament cashes come from right here at Crown. In 2010, Payne earned his best result by finishing sixth in the AU$1,650 No-Limit Hold'em Bounty Event at the Aussie Millions for AU$21,340. Earlier in this series, Payne took 23rd in the AU$ 1,100 No-Limit Hold'em Six Max for AU$5,200. With over 90,000 in chips separating him from second-place Phillip Willcocks, things are looking good for Payne to have a breakout event.

A few big notables are scattered amoungst top 10 moving into today's play. Patrik Antonius had a great end to Day 1c last night and bagged up 204,800. Frank Rusnak finished at the Day 1b chip leader with 165,100, and then James Obst and Ayaz Mahmood round out the top 10 with 156,700 and 154,700, respectively.

Other notable faces still in the field are Joe Hachem, Jason Mercier, Phil Ivey, Sam Trickett, Gary Benson, Jan Collado, Stephen Chidwick, Sam Holden, Jesse Sylvia, Tyron Krost, Tony Bloom, Dan Shak and Kenny Wong.

Another seven 90-minute levels are slated for action on Day 2 with 15-minute breaks following each level. After Level 11, a 75-minute dinner break will be had. Play is scheduled to recommence at 12:30 p.m. local time here at Crown Casino in sunny Melbourne, so be sure to stick with the PokerNews team all day long for live updates hot off the tables.
