Adler, Smith & Song Among Big Stacks at End of Day 1a in $5,300 The Return

Level 10 : Blinds 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Dusti Smith
Dusti Smith

Day 1a of the $5,300 The Return as part of The Return - A Borgata Championship Event in Atlantic City has wrapped up after ten levels of play and saw South Carolina's Adam Adler bagging the chip lead with a stack of 366,500, followed closely by Texan Dusti Smith with 355,500.

Not far behind is Stephen Song, who as the tournament played out was officially named both the overall and Mid-Major 2022 Player of the Year.

And Song, who ended the day with 323,000, isn't the only 2022 POY who bagged on Day 1a. GPI Female POY Cherish Andrews will bring a stack of 135,500 into Day 2.

Cherish Andrews
Cherish Andrews

The first of two starting flights of the $3 million guaranteed event attracted 562 runners and only about a quarter of those players made it to the end of the day. Adler is looking to continue his run-good into the new year after finishing fourth in the World Poker Tour (WPT) World Championship in Las Vegas in December for $1.6 million. The fifth-place finisher of that event, Frank Funaro, also found a bag and will enter the second day of play with 249,500.

Those are hardly the only notables who survived the day. Other big names include 2021 GPI POY Chance Kornuth, Jesse Lonis, Adam Hendrix, Alex Foxen, Kristen Foxen, Chris Brewer, Nick Palma, Blake Bohn, Dan Zack and Ryan Dodd, who less than 24 hours prior pulled the single $250,000 bounty in $2,200 Mystery Bounty Event.

There were plenty of highlights throughout the ten levels of play on Day 1, including during the first level when Michael Wang made quads against the trips of Martin Zamani to leave the Floridian with crumbs. But Zamani climbed back and managed to bag a decent stack ahead of Day 2.

Another highlight was a serendipitous moment when World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event champs Joe McKeehen and Ryan Riess were seated side-by-side, undoubtedly bad news for the player seated to their right. McKeehen fell about halfway through the day while the 2013 champ bagged a stack of 72,500.

One more starting flight remains and it will play out on Jan. 5 at 11 a.m. local time and will follow the same structure as Day 1a. The survivors of both starting flights will combine for Day 2 on Jan. 6 as the four-day event gets closer to naming a winner.

Stay tuned as the PokerNews live reporting team is here in Atlantic City and will continue covering the $5,300 The Return and other events at The Return - A Borgata Championship Event.

2022 GPI Female Player of the Year Chips Up

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Cherish Andrews
Cherish Andrews

Cherish Andrews, who just hours ago was officially named the 2022 GPI Female Player of the Year, scooped a big pot and eliminated an opponent when she got to showdown with {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} on a board of {j-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{5-Spades}{8-Spades}{k-Diamonds}.

The all-in opponent showed {j-Spades}{4-Spades} for a worse kicker and a third player in the hand showed {9-Spades}{7-Spades} for a missed flush draw to earn Andrews the pot.

"Nice hand!" commented table mate Martin Zamani.

"Thank you," she replied.

Across the room, overall GPI and Mid-Major POY Stephen Song sits comfortably with a stack of 180,000

Zack Wins Set Over Set

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Dan Zack
Dan Zack

Dan Zack was on the button in a heads-up pot against an early position opponent on a board of {j-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}.

The opponent bet 22,600 on the turn and Zack called. The {5-Spades} river completed the board and the opponent bet 47,000. Zack sat motionless before announcing all in to send his opponent into the tank.

The opponent gave a frustrated laugh and eventually called off for his final 25,000. Zack showed {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds} for jacks full of fives and the opponent was forced to show {3-Diamonds}{3-Spades} for a lower full house after both players had flopped sets.

Joey Weissman
Joey Weissman

Joey Weissman was in the cutoff in a three-way pot against the hijack and big blind on a board of {k-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{3-Hearts}.

Weissman bet 5,000 and the big blind check-raised to 15,000. The hijack folded and Weissman moved all in for 15,400. The big blind called for just 400 more.

Joey Weissman: {k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Big Blind: {k-Hearts}{4-Hearts}

Weissman had his opponent out-kicked but needed to dodge a four or heart to stay alive. The {3-Clubs} river bricked off for him and the 2022 BetMGM Poker Championship winner earned the double.

Both events appear as part of the famous World Poker Tour, one of the most prestigious poker tours in the world.

Cash games are also a big deal at the Borgata. Players from New Jersey, New York, and other nearby states in the Northeast flock to the casino to play low, mid, and high stakes poker. You'll find a wide mix of games, ranging from $1/$3 no-limit hold'em on up to $10/$25, and sometimes higher if the poker room has interest to spread a game. McKeehen Falls to Two Flushes

Level 7 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Joe McKeehen
Joe McKeehen

Joe McKeehen was in position in a heads-up pot against two opponents, including Chi Kang, on a board of {8-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}.

Both players checked on the turn and McKeehen bet 7,500. Both opponents called. The river brought the {a-Hearts} and Kang moved all in for 14,300. McKeehen was next to act and asked for a count before calling off with slightly less, which sent the third player in the hand into the tank.

"I've got a flush, guys," he groaned. "I call."

Kang showed {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for the nut flush and McKeehen flashed his cards before tossing them into the muck. The third player in the hand showed {9-Hearts}{6-Hearts} for a smaller flush.

Incredibly, seated to the immediate right of the 2015 WSOP Main Event champ was the only other world champion in the room, 2013 winner Ryan Riess.

Shankar Pillai
Shankar Pillai

Shankar Pillai was all in for about 7,000 against two players who had him covered, including Joseph Umdenstock.

Umdenstock checked on the flop of {8-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{2-Clubs} and the third player in the hand bet 3,000. Umdenstock called. Umdenstock checked again on the {k-Diamonds} turn and his opponent checked back.

Umdenstock checked a third time on the {6-Hearts} river and his opponent again bet 3,000. Umdenstock called. The opponent showed {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}, which was no good against the {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts} of Umdenstock. Pillai, meanwhile, showed {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} to lose the main pot and be sent to the rail.

Jesse Lonis
Jesse Lonis

In a three-way pot on a board reading {a-Clubs}{4-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}, Nicholas Verderamo bet 5,000 from the small blind and Chance Kornuth folded in middle position. Jesse Lonis raised all in on the button and Verderamo quickly called with a smallers stack.

Lonis showed {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for a runner-runner flush, but it was no good against the superior runner-runner flush of Verderamo with {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}.

"Wow. Backdoor-backdoor," a player at the table exclaimed.

Solve for Why's Conrad Simpson was seen hitting the rail after getting his kings cracked by the queens of Tom Wheaton to his left.

The board showed {k-Spades}{j-Spades}{10-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} for Simpson's set of kings with {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} to be no good against the Broadway straight of Wheaton with {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}.

"You were drawing thin there!" table mate George Abi-Zeid laughed to Wheaton.

"I think the hand played itself," replied the Faded Spade and Above the Felt Entertainment founder.

Failla Doubles Ostapchenko as He Makes Peace With Bianco

Level 4 : Blinds 200/400, 400 ante
Emanuel "Will the Thrill" Failla
Emanuel "Will the Thrill" Failla

Emanuel "Will the Thrill" Failla was in a heads-up pot against Andrew Ostapchenko and called a turn bet of 4,000 on the board of {2-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{q-Spades}{5-Spades}.

"I think you're bluffing," said Failla.

The river brought the {4-Diamonds} and Ostapchenko moved all in. Failla quickly called. Ostapchenko showed {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} for an overpair and Failla showed {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} before mucking.

"I don't think you're bluffing anymore," he said.

As the hand played out, Failla had a friendly conversation with fellow New Yorker Benedetto Bianco. The two were less friendly yesterday when Bianco delivered a brutal suck-out to Failla deep in the $2,200 Mystery Bounty Event, leading Failla to proclaim to Bianco and another player at the table that "my watch is worth more than both of your lives."

"Is that watch worth a million?" asked Bianco.

"It's not a mil anymore. It went down about 25%," said Failla.
