Malle Takes His Demise Well

Jean Claude Malle shoved under the gun for his last 129,000, and Stephane Albertini called.

Malle: {9-Clubs} {9-Hearts}
Albertini: {Q-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds}

Board: {10-Clubs} {A-Hearts} {6-Spades} {A-Clubs} {2-Hearts}

The affable Malle, who'd clearly been having the time of his life, cheerfully shook hands with everyone at the table like a true gentleman before wishing them all good luck and heading for the payout desk.

The Science of Doubling Up

Evidence

Michel Dubert was all in on the button with {J-Spades} {9-Hearts}, Freddy Deeb in the big blind was holding {A-Clubs} {7-Hearts} and the dealer was arranging the following cards on the board: {A-Hearts} {K-Hearts} {8-Hearts} {5-Hearts} {7-Diamonds}

Hypothesis

Dubert pushed and Deeb called.

Conclusion

Dubert made a higher flush than Deeb did, and duly doubled to 250,000.

Do Juhasz to Shove There?

Benjamin Juhasz does a Joe Cada impersonation
Benjamin Juhasz does a Joe Cada impersonation
It was an exceptional round of blinds for Luke Marsh. Craig Bergeron limped for 16k, and Andras Nemeth raised to 110k from the cutoff. As soon as it folded to Marsh in the big blind, he announced all in. Two quick folds later, he'd picked up a tidy pot.

Next hand, Benjamin Juhasz raised to 36k, and Marsh made it 90,000 to go from the small blind. Action back on Juhasz, he asked, "How much you playing?" Marsh answered vaguely that he had somewhere around 500,000 after the raise. "Ok, all in," announced Juhasz. Insta-call from Marsh. Oops.

Showdown
Juhasz: {3-Clubs} {3-Hearts}
Marsh: {Q-Hearts} {Q-Spades}

Board: {K-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} {6-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds}

Marsh's flopped set sealed the deal and catapulted him toward the top of the chip counts. Turns out he had 645,000, enough to cover Juhasz by at least 50,000.

"You know us Hungarians. Always misclicking," said Andras Nemeth as his fellow countryman left the table.

Okhotskiy Flushes

We arrived tableside just in time to witness portly Ukrainian Oleh Okhotskiy doubling through a very unhappy Michael Fratty - his {A-?} {Q-?} four-flushed on the river to crack Fratty's jacks.

Okhotskiy: over 400,000
Fratty: down to 300,000

Guenni Doesn't Get It Quietly

Jacques Guenni, who does not seem capable of doing things at a normal volume, announced extremely loudly that he was all in, to the visible irritation of a couple players at the next table. Benjamin Juhasz made the call.

Guenni: {A-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds}
Juhasz: {A-Clubs} {J-Spades}

Board: {Q-Clubs} {A-Diamonds} {6-Clubs} {6-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds}

It seems so peaceful in print like that; but please believe that Mr. Guenni's double up was accompanied by a whole load of high-volume celebratory shenanigans.

Portal Sitting Pretty

Alexia Portal
Alexia Portal
Alexia Portal has a lot of admirers in France. Who are we kidding? Alexia Portal has a lot of admirers everywhere. But she's certainly got a big fan base in the tournament room today. She was in a huge hand with Jake Cody, and suddenly it seemed that her table was the only one in the room.

We didn't catch the early action but went to investigate why every single member of the French media was swarming her table. People were standing on chairs, knocking over ropes, pushing each other. By the time we managed to find a line of sight, there were already close to 300,000 chips in the middle on the river.

Board: {10-Clubs} {5-Clubs} {5-Spades} {7-Clubs} {3-Clubs}

Portal was sitting completely frozen, staring at her entire stack (over 300,000) that she had just pushed across the betting line. Cody tanked and tanked, if possible retreating further into the hoodie he's been hiding in all day.

Someone called time, and Cody gave up his hand before the floor had made it through the crowd to the table. Portal looked like she might collapse with relief. Her audience gave a rousing cheer that only got louder when she showed a brazen {A-Diamonds} {Q-Spades}.

Portal racked up over 600,000 when the table was broken a hand later.
