Bubble Burst

Level 20 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante

With 56 players remaining we were expecting a long bubble as hand-for-hand play was about to begin. Lucky for everyone, we bypassed that with a double-elimination. In the hand, Phylis Blanton and Marcus Marzette were all in and covered by Brian Burney.

Blanton: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}
Marzette: {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}
Burney: {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}

The board ran out clean and Burney's aces held to make Marzette and Blanton the bubble boy and girl respectively.

"Straight Flush"

Level 20 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Kurt Jewell
Kurt Jewell

Kurt Jewell raised to 15,500 from middle position and received calls from Robert Thornhill in the small blind and Hamed Wardak in the big. When the flop came down {4-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{6-Clubs}, Thornhill bet 21,500, Wardak folded, and Jewell moved all in. Thornhill tanked before making the call and putting his tournament life at risk:

Thornhill: {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs}
Jewell: {8-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}

Thornhill was in good shape with the overpair and higher flush draw. The dealer slowly burned and turned the {4-Diamonds}, which changed nothing. That card was followed by the {5-Clubs} on the river, which sent Thornhill into a celebration having his a king-high flush.

"Straight flush," Jewell said in a matter-of-fact tone. Thornhill took a second look at the board and his face dropped. It was true Jewell had hit his gin card to take down the pot and increase his stack to 330,000. Thornhill was left with nothing to do but make the long walk out of the tournament area just shy of the money.

White vs. Derden

Level 20 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante

Just before the level-up, Samuel White raised to 15,000 preflop from middle position and received a call from Preston Derden in the small blind. When the flop came down {7-Hearts}{9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}, Derden bet 25,000 and White was the one to call.

The dealer burned and turned the {Q-Spades}, which inspired Derden to check-call a bet of 25,000 from White. When the {6-Diamonds} peeled off on the river, Derden once again check-called White's bet, this time to the tune of 30,000. White showed {K-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for a rivered straight and Derden simply muck. White is up to 365,000 while Derden dropped to just 13,000.

Harden Trips Kirk

Level 19 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Kirk Tripp
Kirk Tripp

One of the more interesting stories coming into Day 2 was that of Tripp Kirk, who had won Event #17 ($555 6-Handed NLHE/213 players) for a gold circuit ring and a $25,220 payday. Kirk was looking to finish fifth or better in the Main Event to claim the title of Harrah's Tunica Casino Champion and qualify for the WSOPC National Championship.

Unfortunately for Kirk, his plans were tripped up. It happened when he moved all in for around 50,000 with {9-Spades}{9-Hearts} and was called by the {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts} of Mary Harden. While Kirk managed to survive the {2-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{J-Hearts} flop, the {A-Diamonds} on the turn gave Harden the lead. Kirk needed a nine on the river but it was not meant to be as the {6-Hearts} appeared. Kirk's Main Event and hopes of becoming Casino Champ have come to an end.

Gibralter Takes Monster Pot Off Calenzo

Level 19 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Kevin Calenzo
Kevin Calenzo

With about 140,000 in the pot and a board reading {10-Spades}{4-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}, Kevin Calenzo and Jeff Gibralter got all the money in, about 94,500 each, with the former being the one at risk.

Gibralter: {5-Hearts}{3-Hearts}
Calenzo: {A-Spades}{J-Spades}

As it happened, Gibralter had hit a wheel on the turn to take the lead in the 335,000 pot, but Calenzo could still win the hand with a spade on the river. Unfortunately for him, it was the {7-Clubs} and he was left shaking his head in addition to a small stack of 30,000.
