APPT Seoul Main Event

Day 2 Completed

That's A Wrap!

Brian Kang = Overnight Chip Leader
Brian Kang = Overnight Chip Leader
As we all catch our breath, an incredible Day 2 of the 2008 PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour event here in Seoul, South Korea has come to an end...and what an exciting end to the day it was!

We started out with 83 hopefuls, with some big names falling early including PokerStars players Van Marcus, Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier, Celina Lin and Ivan Tan. Players dropped away at a steady pace with the Japanese contigent going strong led by Yoshihiro Tasaka who emerged as one of our chip leaders during the day.

Eddie Sabat couldn't go back-to-back and overnight chip leader Jan Van Dyk capitulated as we approached the business end of the tournament.

Undoubtedly the story of the day is with Australian David Saab. If Saab can talk up a storm, then he created nothing short of a hurricane with his play on the felt. He looked to be unstoppable at times during the day as he led the field and was in control of his table. However some devastating blows on the money bubble saw him crash out of the tournament in sensational fashion. PokerNews' own Melissa Castello caught up with David moments after his elimination from this event, so stay tuned to our video gallery for this must-see interview.

The final sixteen players have bagged and tagged their chips and will return tomorrow to battle it out until we crown a champion. Notable players include Wooka Kim, Diwei "Brian" Huang who will be looking to repeat his final table appearance from APPT Macau, and PokerStars professional Dan Schreiber who will be looking to better his 8th place finish from this event last year.

They will be chasing Brian Kang who captured the big scalps of Celina Lin and David Saab during the day to end the day as our chip leader with over 300,000 chips.

Join us once again a 1 p.m. local time tomorrow as the 2008 APPT Seoul event crowns a new poker champion! See you then!

David Saab Bubbles Out of the Money

David Saab eliminated
David Saab eliminated
In a stunning turnabout, David Saab is the bubble boy for this tournament, having just been eliminated in 17th place. He raised to 6,000 preflop and was called by Brian Kang from the button. The flop was {2-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} {10-Hearts} and brought a roughly pot-sized bet of 17,500 from Saab. Kang tanked for about a minute before making the call.

As soon as he called, Saab disgustedly said, "Blah blah blah, I check the turn dark." He was already out of his seat, standing over the table as the dealer burned and turned the {7-Diamonds} and Kang reached for chips.

"Careful my friend," said Saab, but Kang fired out anyway, for 25,000. The moment the chips were across the line, Saab announced he was all in. Kang snap-called. It was a repeat of the big hand the two played just roughly forty minutes before; Saab showed baby suited cards, {6-Hearts} {2-Hearts}, and Kang showed a small set, {3-Spades} {3-Clubs}. This time, however, Saab had hearts in addition to a pair.

"Do you think I can suck out?" Saab asked nobody in particular. For his part, Kang couldn't watch the river come down, but he had no cause for alarm. The river was the {4-Clubs}. With it, David Saab's tournament came to an end.

Massive Three-Way All In But No Bubble Burst

Hidenari Shiono
Hidenari Shiono
An incredible pot has just developed on the bubble that has blown the roof off the Walker Hill Casino.

The action started with David Saab, who has been relentlessly raising on the bubble, and he made it 7,000 to go from under the gun. It folded around to Hidenari Shiono in the small blind who made the call. In the big blind, Wooka Kim then smiled to her entourage on the rail and moved all in. It was an additional 10,200 and Saab insta-called. Shiono thought for a moment but the pot odds dictated a call.

With two live players still in the hand they took a dangerous looking flop of {6-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{9-Hearts}. Shiono checked to Saab who immediately announced that he was all in! Shiono took a few moments before shouting "All in!" to announce a call! A massive three-way all in attracted players and fans from everywhere as they smothered the table to catch a glimpse of the action.

Kim: {J-Hearts}{J-Spades}
Shiono: {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}
Saab: {7-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

Saab had flopped top two pair and was yelling above the crowd for "brick, brick", willing his hand to hold against the flush and straight draws of his opponents.

The turn was the {Q-Clubs} but the river fell the {A-Hearts} to the roars of the rail, as Kim celebrated a triple up with her friends as Shiono fell off his chair and thumped onto the floor as he collected a massive side pot!

The aftermath saw Kim triple to 46,000, Shiono double up to 155,000 with Saab the victim as he falls to 118,000.

On the Edge

We're on the bubble. The next player out will be saddled with the unfortunate title of Bubbly Boy / Babe. Until then, we're playing hand-for-hand on each of the remaining three tables.

Phucharoenyos Eliminated

Chanon Phucharoenyos came so close. He was all in against Hidenari Shiono after a series of preflop raises, holding with {A-Hearts} {K-Diamonds}. All he needed was an ace or a king to overcome Shiono's pocket queens, but it wasn't to be. The board ran out {9-Hearts} {4-Spades} {J-Spades} {9-Diamonds} {6-Spades} to send Phycharoenyos packing in 18th place.

Saab Lashes Jung

Jae Jung Eliminated

The action folded to David Saab in the small blind who raised it up an additional 4,000. Jae Jung, in the big blind, then moved all in for an additional 19,000. Saab sighed, saying he should've just moved all in, but since he was priced in he decided to make the call.

Remarkably Saab held the best hand with {K-Clubs}{5-Clubs} against Jung's {J-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}.

"Great play with jack-ten when you have no fold equity" fired Saab at his opponent as the board ran out {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} to award him the pot and send Jung to the rail.

"I will not fold!" cried Saab as he is now back up to about 185,000 chips.

Nagata Eliminated

Masayuki Nagata Eliminated
Masayuki Nagata Eliminated
It was a case of "so close, but so far" for Masayuki Nagata. He shoved over the top of a raise to 7,000 by Daniel Schreiber. Schreiber quickly called, tabling {10-Clubs} {10-Diamonds}. That hand was in the lead but had to dodge Nagata's two overcards, {A-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs}. He successfully did so on a board that came out {K-Clubs} {5-Clubs} {6-Hearts} {4-Spades} {7-Clubs}. With each passing card, as Nagata's tournament life ebbed away, he let out a little yelp, hoping against hope that the tide would turn. It did not. He has been eliminated.

Williams Wins Blind Battle with Kondo

The action folded to Michiyuki Kondo in the small blind who min-raised with Daniel Williams making the call in the big blind.

They saw a flop of {Q-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} and Kondo fired out a bet of 4,000. Williams then popped it up to 10,000. Kondo looked down at his last 20,000 and decided to save them for a better spot as he let his hand go. Williams is now up to 60,000.

Acton Crippled, Then Eliminated

Robert Acton
Robert Acton
The redraw dealt Robert Acton an unkind blow. He got all in preflop with those lovely ladies, pocket queens, against the {A-Hearts} {J-Hearts} of Yuji Masaki. An ace on the flop was crushing for Acton, and he never recovered. He was down to 5,000 in chips, while Masaki has climbed to about 45,000.

A few moments later Action couldn't find a double up and was sent to the rail.
