Once More Unto the Breach

Edward Sabat is hoping to ride his chip stack to the final table
Edward Sabat is hoping to ride his chip stack to the final table
Welcome back to the Grand Waldo Hotel and Casino in exotic Macau for Day 3 of the 2008 PokerStars.net APPT Macau Main Event. It was a vicious slog through seven levels of play yesterday, with poker players eliminated left and right at a staccato pace through the first four levels of play.

By the time Day 2 ended, the money bubble had burst and 39 of the 208 players who started the day remained standing. At their head with a very narrow chip lead is Edward Sabat, an American player from California who has two WSOP Circuit final tables to his credit along with two cashes at the 2008 WSOP. He is closely chased by Charles Chua, Keith Wintermans, Javed Abrahams and David Steicke, who yesterday made one of the most amazing calls anyone in media row could ever remember seeing.

Dodds Doubles

Shoutbox railbirds will be pleased to learn that Joel "Strong Play" Dodds has found an early double-up. He took pocket jacks to war against an opponent's pocket eights, and it was all over when he spiked a third jack on the flop.

Dodds is now up to 111,000 chips.

Lau Can't Get a Double, but Lam Can

John Juanda, one of the biggest names left in the field, opened for 10,000 from under the gun. Action folded to Phil Lau in late position, who moved all in for 40,000.

"Come on, John," said Lau, seemingly trying to encourage Juanda to call. No luck for Lau this time; Juanda folded.

Charles Lam didn't have a similar problem. He reraised Diwei Huang after Huang had opened for 12,000. Huang shoved and Lam made the call. He was dominated, his {A-Hearts} {7-Hearts} against Huang's {A-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} but rivered a gutshot straight to double up.

Choi Eliminates Carter

Tom Carter entered Day 3 as one of our short stacks and couldn't find the early double-up that he needed. After Jung Hyun Choi opened with a raise to 10,000, Carter shoved for his last 30,000 and Choi made the call.

Choi: {10-Clubs}{J-Clubs}
Carter: {Q-Hearts}{K-Clubs}

The board fell {2-Spades}{4-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} to give Choi a pair of jacks on the turn to take the pot and eliminate Carter.

Olle Lindberg Eliminated

The short stacks are looking to shove early. Olle Lindberg came over the top of Mark Walsh's raise to 10,000 by shoving all in for 35,000. Walsh called with {Q-Hearts} {5-Hearts} against Lindberg's {A-Spades} {J-Hearts}. Lindberg paired aces on the {3-Spades} {A-Hearts} {2-Clubs} flop but was drawing dead to a chop when the turn {4-Hearts} filled Walsh's gutshot wheel draw. The river was the {10-Diamonds}.

Walsh is now up to about 170,000.

Pushing Up Daisies

Daisy Wain during Day 2 action
Daisy Wain during Day 2 action
Daisy Wain has fallen to the inexorable power of the Chuck Truck. Wain and Chua got it all in preflop in a classic race situation, with Wain tabling {9-Spades} {A-Spades} against Chua's {7-Clubs} {7-Hearts}. The flop helped neither player, coming down {2-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} {2-Spades}. Wain paired her ace with the {A-Diamonds} on the turn, but Chua made a comeback with a river of {7-Spades} to make a set of sevens and knock Wain out.

"What!" shouted Wain as the river came down to end her tournament. "What the hell!"
