Only 37 Return For Day 3 Action!

Here we are again in the Crown Poker Room for the 2011 PokerStars.net Melbourne APPT Main Event, with the action of the penultimate day set to kick off!

Only 37 players will be returning for today’s proceedings, and nine of those will be going home empty-handed, while the rest will be guaranteed at least $8,600 and the chance at taking a run at the $330,000 first prize.

The player with all the chips and the man to catch today is Phillip Willcocks, who starts Day 3 with 770,400 in chips. Hot on Willcocks' tail, and starting the day sitting side-by-side with Willcocks is James Obst and his 452,900 in chips. Also in a good position is PokerStars Team Online Pro Keiran Harris with 389,000 in chips.

Today is expected to play until a final table is reached and some players with plenty of chips to work with include, Luke Edwards (356,100), Jackson Zheng (281,800), Antonis Kambouroglou (279,200), Michael Guzzardi (230,100), Mitch Carle (172,300), Leo Boxell (172,300) and Tony Hachem (161,400).

Play is set to begin at 12:10 PM AEST with PokerNews again providing all the action from the floor, as we weave our way down to the APPT final table!

The cards are in the air on Day 3 of the APPT Melbourne Main Event!

With blinds starting at 2,000/4,000 and with a 400 chip ante, some of the short stacks such as Amir Minager, Simon Taberham and Aharon Shabtay will be looking to get a move on.

First Hand Double

It was the first hand of play when Andrew Mercaldi raised to 11,200 from under the gun. The action folded around to Aharon Shabtay, who started the day as one of the short stacks. Shabtay decided that this first hand would be a perfect time to ship his stack all-in and did just that. With a call from Mercaldi, the players tabled their hands.

Mercaldi: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Shabtay: {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}

Shabtay would need to dodge some bullets or it would be a very quick day for him.

Board: {5-Spades}{7-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{j-Spades}

No danger for Shabtay as he makes the first hand double-up and puts a dent in Mercaldi's stack.

First Casualty

Micth Carle led the chip counts on Day 1 and has now dealt the first fatal blow on Day 3, taking all of Amir Minagar's chips and sending him to the rail in 37th place.

Carle raised in late postion and Minagar moved all-in from the small blind. Carle made the call and the players turned their hands over.

Carle: {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}
Minagar: {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}

It was a nightmare for Minagar, who couldn't catch up as the board ran out {q-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{j-Spades}.

Another One Hits The Rail

The bust outs are coming fast early into the day, with Andrew Ferguson the latest victim.

Ferguson was in trouble when he ran his {5-Spades}{5-Hearts} into the {a-Spades}{a-Hearts} of Kyle Cheong.

No improvement on a board showing {j-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{4-Spades} and it was home time for Ferguson.

Peel Doubles

Folded to Scott Peel in the cutoff seat, he moved all-in for his 70,000 chip stack and sent the action to Norah Greer on his direct left. The last lady left in the tournament went into the tank before eventually calling.

Greer: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Peel: {q-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

Peel would need some help, and with the {3-Clubs}{2-Spades}{q-Clubs} on the flop, the two players would both hit top pair, with Peel out-kicked and on his way out of the tournament. That is until the turn, when the {k-Clubs} fell. The river bricked and it was a nice double-up for Peel.

Mercaldi In Trouble

Andrew Mercaldi had his short stack all-in against the shorter stack of Simon Taberham. It was Taberham who had the most to worry about, with his tournament life on the line.

Mercaldi held {10-Spades}{10-Hearts} against the {k-Spades}{q-Hearts} of Simon Taberham.

Mercaldi was looking good to knock out Taberham, with a flop landing {2-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} and the {7-Hearts} on the turn.

The {k-Clubs} on the river would save Taberham and leave Mercaldi with barely a leg to stand on.
