Kanaan Dangerous

Michael Kanaan is starting to look dangerous after winning a big pot and taking a chunk from our chip leader Amit Varma.

We picked up the action on the turn with the board showing {j-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}. Nick Wong checked the small blind to Alistair Duff who bet 22,500 from the big blind. Kanaan, Varma and Wong all called as the river fell a repeat {Q-Diamonds}.

This time Wong and Duff checked to Kanaan who tossed out 47,000. Varma quickly called as Wong and Duff stepped aside.

Kanaan showed {q-Spades}{k-Clubs} for trip queens which was too good as he raked in the healthy pot.

Edgar Out in 19th

Just prior to the break we lost Chris Edgar in 19th place. He recalled to us that his final hand came when he shoved his last 105,000 with pocket nines following an open from Alistair Duff. The table folded around but Duff wasn’t going anywhere with his pocket kings.

The flop came {10-}{10-}{10-} to leave Edgar virtually dead and when the turn and river bricked out, he was sent to the rail.

Shows The Big Bluff

It all started when Sungsik Bae opened it up to 21,000 from middle position. Fredrick Hallen then three-bet to 38,000 from the cutoff. Bae made the call and some cards were dealt on the felt.

Bae was in check-call mode as the board was dealt out {8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Clubs}, with the flop bet from Hallen being 30,000 and the turn bet, 55,000.

On the river, a {k-Hearts} was dealt and Bae immediately shoved all in. Hallen looked sickened and eventually folded. When Hallen folded, Bae tabled {a-Spades}{10-Spades} and let out a celebratory scream louder than can be described using mere words. This prompted Hallen to get out of his chair and pace the room.

Hallen Home

It just seems somewhat standard that it would be Sungsik Bae who dealt the fatal blow to Fredrick Hallen's tournament life after recently showing him that huge bluff you can read about below.

Hallen's last hand started when Hallen shoved all in from middle position holding {10-}{10-}. Bae woke up with {j-}{j-} in the big blind and madde the call. Again he let out a triumphant yelp as the board ran out {k-Spades}{2-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{5-Spades}. With that, Hallen goes home in 18th place.

One Down and Down to Two

The recent elimination of Andrew Nguyen has seen the Day 3 field whittled down to just two tables of eight. It was chip leader Amit Varma who dealt the blow to Nguyen, getting Nguyen to commit his chips preflop holding {a-}{q-} agsainst his own {a-}{k-}. Varma's big-slick held up and Nguyen was sent hom in 17th place.

Bad at Math

Carter Gill has been struggling on a short stack, looking desperately for a double up to get back into contention.

In a recent pot that went to showdown, Gill called a minimum preflop raise from Hyung Kook Shin to see a flop of {8-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{10-Hearts}. Gill check-called for 16,000 before both players checked the {8-Spades} turn and {7-Clubs} river.
Gill hoped his {K-Spades}{3-Hearts} was good but Shin showed {9-Spades}{9-Clubs} to take it down.

“Argh I hate math. I’m so bad!” sighed Gill.

Sammy Sent Sad

We’ve just lost ANZPT Canberra champ Sammy Huang from the Main Event in a bit of a big blind special gone wrong.

We picked up the action on the turn on the board of {5-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{2-Clubs}, with Nick Wong betting 38,000. From the big blind, Huang deliberated before check-raising all in for an additional 54,000.

“I guess I have to call,” sighed Wong as he did the math and threw the chips into the middle with {q-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for a flush draw. He’d need to hit it as Huang tabled {J-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} for trip sixes.

The dealer burned and revealed the {3-Clubs} to the delight of Wong as he made his flush to win the pot.

“Can you believe that?” said a shocked Huang as he stood and stared at the board for several moments before eventually sulking off to the cashier in 16th place.
