First Elimination of The Day

We didn't have to wait long for the first elimination of today with a big clash on table 20. Norman Bumthrey held {A-Spades}{A-Clubs} and on a flop of {Q-Spades}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} had all of his money in against Gary Diamond who was well in front with {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} for a set of queens. A {Q-Clubs} on the turn brought quads for Diamond and Bumthrey becomes the first elimination of day 1b.

Some Early Action

On table 11, five players saw a flop of {3-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}.

James Johanson checked and Sam Sayed bet 350 and two players including Johanson called.

The turn is the {6-Hearts}. Johanson checks and Sayed bets 1,100. Johanson then check-raises to 4,200. Sayed goes into then tank and eventually folds, and Johanson shows {9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for a pair, flush and straight draw much to the excitement of the rest of the table.

The Field

Tournament director Danny McDonagh tells us that there are currently 180 players in today's field. We'll have the official tally for you shortly.

Khouiss Freerolls Downing

On the high profile table 4, the board read {Q-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} as Peter Aristidou bet out 1,300 into the pot. Sam Khouiss flat called and Matt Downing raises to 4,000. Aristidou thinks for a few moments and folds. Khouiss then re-raises to 11,000. Downing pushes all in and Khouiss calls.

Khouiss: {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}
Downing: {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}

"I'm freerolling! I'm freerolling! Club! Club! CLUUUUB!" came the cry from Khouiss, but the {2-Spades} on the river ended the drama with a split pot.

Kenny Ng Eliminates James Honeybone

James Honeybone
James Honeybone
Just before the end of the first level of play, Australian pro Kenny Ng eliminated James Honeybone from the tournament. Here's how the hand went down according to Kenny:

The action folded around to James in the small blind who made it 350 to go. Kenny then kicked it up to 1,000 from the big blind and James made the call. The flop came A-K-Q and James checked to Kenny who led out with a 1,2000 bet; James made the call.

The turn brought a four and this time it was James who bet out, tossing 1,500 into the middle. Kenny then put in a raise, upping the ante to 5,000. Again, James made the call.

The last card off the deck was a 10 and James open-shoved all in, putting Kenny to a decision for most of his chips. Sitting with pocket fours, having made a set on the turn, Kenny went into the tank a bit before eventually making the call. Borrowing a popular line from Joe Hachem, he shouted, "Pass the sugar!" after he realized he'd won the hand.
