Level 15 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Athanasios Polychronopoulos' recent win took longer than it takes to write his name
Athanasios Polychronopoulos' recent win took longer than it takes to write his name

After the action folded around to Athanasios Polychronopoulos in the small blind, he waited for 30 seconds or so before making his move. That move happened to be a limp into the pot, and Mike Leah exercised his big blind option by tapping the table, with his check preceded by a half minute of thought as well.

The flop came down {8-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{7-Spades} and Polychronopoulos froze at the sight, waiting good and long before flicking out a 7,000 c-bet. Leah looked over at Polychronopoulos and stared him down, covering his own mouth with his hoodie and reflecting on the things one reflects over when faced with a bet of one big blind. Finally, he tossed out the requisite calling chips to see the {2-Diamonds} fall on the turn.

Polychronopoulos studied the baby card board and stared into the ether, waiting for more than a minute before moving a 16,000 wager into the middle. Leah responded with his own tank job, sitting still as a stone and moving his gaze back and forth from the board to his opponent's eyes. Finally, he flatted and fifth street fell {j-Diamonds}.

More than 35 seconds passed before a 35,000 bet was made, with Polychronopoulos firing his third barrel at Leah. Another minute or two later, the hand finally ended with a crying call by Leah, who even waited a while to muck his cards after Polychronopoulos tabled {q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for a runner-runner flush catch.

He... Could... Go... All... the... Way

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Miles Austin
Miles Austin

As the field dwindles with every elimination, Miles Austin moves one step closer to adding another accomplishment to an already stacked résumé:

  • 2× Pro Bowl (2009, 2010)
  • NFC receiving yards leader (2009)
  • PFWA Most Improved Player of the Year (2009)
  • Dallas Cowboys single-game receiving record (250)
  • WPT World Championship cash?

Austin currently sits with just over 60,000, and he will need to haul in a Hail Mary or two to move his stack back to the average. But after witnessing Austin play his way through the a stacked field of feared poker pros to reach Day 3, we wouldn't be surprised if he finds a way to cross the goal line.

Miles Austin Eliminated

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Miles Austin
Miles Austin

The deep run of NFL Wide Receiver Miles Austin has come to an end after he was part of a three way all-in pre-flop confrontation that involved Loni Harwood and George Kelly as well. Here were the hands when they were turned over:

Austin {5-Spades}{5-Hearts}
Harwood {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}
Kelly {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}

The board would give Harwood a small sliver of hope when it came {Q-Spades}{J-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} but the turn of {6-Diamonds} and river of {2-Clubs} meant the entire pot would go Kelly's way.

Austin was gracious in his departure, wishing everyone good luck and telling them that he enjoyed himself.

Dressed to the Nines

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
David Tuthill - Eliminated
David Tuthill - Eliminated

Glenn Lafay opened for 18,000 holding the button and Jeff Gross flatted from the small blind. With a short stack and chips already in the pot, David Tuthill three-bet jammed for his last 56,000, before retreating to the safety of his hoodie.

Lafaye flatted the three-bet to put Tuthill at risk, and Gross did the same to build a sizable pot before the flop.

After the dealer fanned the {7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} across the felt Gross tapped the table slowly. Lafaye was not slow to act and he moved a stack forward for a bet of 115,000. This represented just under half of Gross' remaining stack, and he rightfully dove deep into the tank to figure things out. The deliberation took several minutes and all the while Tuthill sat in agony, knowing the big action brewing between those two likely meant trouble for him.

Finally, after a few minutes had elapsed Gross went for the pump fake, assembling his remaining 245,000 or so as if to make the shove, and even sliding them nearer to his cards, but the stack remained behind his hand. After all of that, Gross declined to make the call, laying his hand down and telling Lafaye he folded pocket nines.

Lafaye: {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}
Tuthill: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}

Lafaye held the other two nines in the deck, and the board bricked out coming {q-Diamonds} and {8-Hearts} on the turn and river. Tuthill headed for the exits while Gross and Lafaye immediately began analyzing the hand as pros are wont to do.

The Brat Disciplined

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

After he opened to 16,000 from late position Phil Hellmuth watched the next player to act slide out a three-bet to 60,000.

When the action folded back around to him, Hellmuth went into the routine which made him a superstar, talking his way through a brief tank-fold.

"I mean, you just did that so smooth..." he said to the three-bettor. "I know how to lay this hand down though."

Hellmuth flashed his {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} to the table, showing the restraint which defines his inimitable style of poker (on the felt at least, as restraint is something he rarely shows during his trademark rants). After entering Day 3 with one of the shortest stacks in the room, Hellmuth has picked his spots wisely and worked his way back to the realm of respectability, showing why he considers himself to be the best poker player to ever grace the planet with his presence.

She Don't Lok Wong

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
She Lok Wong - Eliminated
She Lok Wong - Eliminated

She Lok Wong limped in from under the gun and watched as Curt Kohlberg did the same from the cutoff.

Jeff Madsen was on the button and he looked down to see a sight to behold: {A-Hearts}{a-Spades}. With two rockets in the hole and two limpers trying to play the pot on the cheap, Madsen raised it up to 25,000, before seeing exactly what he wanted.

Wong three-bet ripped for his last 130,000 and Kohlberg got out of the way, leaving Madsen to snap the bet off with his bullets. Madsen's hand was crushing Wong's {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} and a lady-less board ran out clean to leave Wong on the outside looking in.

Madsen, meanwhile, moved into the upper echelon of the chip counts, and flush with a replenished arsenal with which to work, he will no doubt be one of the more active players as Day 3 rolls on.

Orson's Out

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Orson Young - Eliminated
Orson Young - Eliminated

Orson Young was all in and at risk for around 200,000 on a flop of {10-Spades}{j-Spades}{6-Spades} according to one of our colleagues, and he had two pair with {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. Loni Harwood was drawing to a flush holding {a-Spades}{9-Hearts}, and the turn was a spade - the {9-Spades}.

Young needed to fill up on the river to stay alive, but he failed to when the {4-Diamonds} bricked off on the river.

Harwood, a "One's to Watch" this season, is up to 605,000 chips.

That's Why He's Phil Hellmuth

Level 17 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Phil Hellmuth, Jordan Cristos
Phil Hellmuth, Jordan Cristos

Phil Hellmuth has made a lucrative living with his play on the felt, but its his act away from the table that has made him poker's most recognizable name.

Ranting, raving, and hectoring his way through a glorious career on the felt, Hellmuth has claimed top honors in the ongoing chase for WSOP bracelet glory, adding an astounding 13 of those ducats to his world-class résumé. There's one item missing from that résumé though... a World Poker Tour title.

The "Poker Brat" certainly knows what a win in this WPT World Championship would mean for his legacy, and during the last level of play he let the whole room know it too.

First, during a hand against Jordan Cristos, we watched Hellmuth check-call a bet of 13,000 on the {5-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{4-Hearts} flop. When the {4-Clubs} arrived to pair the board on the turn, Hellmuth sprung to life, firing out for 17,000 and launching into his trademark table talk.

"A four's not really in my range here..." he told Cristos from across the table. "But you already know that about me."

Cristos took the hint and laid his hand down without responding, and Hellmuth piped up again, telling Cristos "just two eights kid. That's all."

Later on, Hellmuth limped into the pot holding what he claimed to be {K-}{q-}, before an amateur player decided to test the Brat with a raise to 25,000. Hellmuth flatted to see the {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{4-Clubs} flop, and he led out for 17,000 trying to bully his less experienced opponent. That man was not impressed, however, and he made it 55,000 to play, prompting yet another Hellmuthian performance after he elected to fold.

"I mean, I invented that move, limping in with king-queen..." he told the table. "That's why I'm Phil Hellmuth."

The lecture continued as Hellmuth telling the man, "You're trying to give me your money there... not sure why you don't want to make money, but that's fine."

You can't make this stuff up folks... trust us. One can only hope Hellmuth's short-stack grind continues, because win or lose, the show never ends.

Greer Gone

Garrett Greer - Eliminated
Garrett Greer - Eliminated

Nick Schulman raised to 18,000 from under the gun, Garrett Greer moved all in for 82,000 on his direct left, and the action folded back to Schulman, who called.

Schulman: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Greer: {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

It was a classic race situation, and Schulman took the lead when the dealer fanned a flop of {a-Clubs}{4-Spades}{a-Diamonds}. Neither the turn ({10-Diamonds}) nor the river ({3-Spades}) produced nines, and Greer was eliminated.

Schulman, a two-time WSOP bracelet winner, chipped up to 565,000.

Shoving Match

Level 17 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
George Kelly
George Kelly

We just caught two hands which demonstrate the power of the three-bet shove, with Blake Bohn and George Kelly each making the move and getting through to chip up.

First, Athanasios Polychronopoulos opened for 20,000 from the cutoff, and Blake Bohn jammed over the top for his last 102,000.

Polychronopoulos took his time to think things through, cutting out the requisite calling chips to assess the potential damage should showdown a second-best hand. After two minutes or so, Polychronopoulos decided discretion was the better part of valor, and he flashed the {A-Spades} first before showing its inferior companion in the {7-Spades}.

"Ahh..." said Bohn when he saw the laydown. "I wanted a call." Bohn then held his {a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} up for Polychronopoulos to see, before dragging in the pot.

A moment later we caught George Kelly in the same spot, with a three-bet shove for 130,000 or so sitting in front of his cards. Keven Stammen was the one tanking this time, after he opened for 16,000 in middle position. Stammen laid down to the pressure play too, telling the table "got no heart" with a smile as he did so.
