Welcome To Day 1a of the 2021 Colorado Poker Championship $1,450 Main Event

Bally's Colorado Poker Championship
Bally's Colorado Poker Championship

After 20 prelims have played to their completion over two weeks' time, Bally's Black Hawk's flagship poker series, the Colorado Poker Championship (CPC) has reached the $1,450 Main Event.

Play will kick off on Thursday at noon with Day 1a, the first of three starting flights that will run through Saturday. The event is set to run over three days, with the field combining on Sunday for Day 2 to play down to the final table, which will take place Monday and declare this year's only CPC Main Event champion. The eventual winner will also be the first to claim a CPC title in over two years, with Steve Wilkie and Nate Zoller chopping the most recent August 2019 version for $60,114 apiece.

Cards will fly at noon local time with players receiving starting stacks of 30,000. Blinds begin at 100/100 with a big-blind ante in place from the start and 40-minute levels on Day 1. There will be 10-minute breaks at the completion of every three levels, or two hours of play, with a 40-minute dinner break at the conclusion of Level 9 (600/1,200/1,200) at approximately 6:20 p.m.

Unlimited re-entries are available through the dinner break, closing at the beginning of Level 10 (1,000/1,500/1,500) at approximately 7 p.m. local time. Play will conclude at the end of Level 14 (2,000/4,000/4,000) unless 12% of the field remains prior to that time. The tournament is also not a best-stack-forward event, meaning all players who find a bag at the end of the night must take that stack into Day 2 unless they wish to forfeit their chips and try again in a subsequent flight.

WSOP Main Event Seat Up for Grabs

Another highlight to the CPC is its series-long points race, which is set to award five seats to the $3,000 CPC High Roller on Wednesday, September 29 (also covered by PokerNews) to the top points finishers. Additionally, the winner of the points leader board will also earn themselves $10,000 for a World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event entry.

As of September 21, Jason Welch leads the way with a total of 350 points, with Bobby Sanoubane, Sammy Aweida, Aaron Frei, and Salim Wahdan also in prime position for High Roller seats. However, plenty of familiar faces can be found lurking in the shadows, such as Josh Saltz, Ross Lantzy, and Al Hart, and nobody's spot is truly safe as a big Main Event turnout could shake up the landscape entirely.

"Welcome to the Table, Sir"

Level 2 : 100/200, 200 ante
Steve Wilkie
Steve Wilkie

A player in early position raised to 400 and saw Ted Shenefelt call on his direct left. Zach Gutierrez and Steve Wilkie also called in the hijack and cutoff, respectively, with the players on the button and in the big blind also coming along.

"Six players," said the dealer before spreading a flop of {4-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}. The first five players checked, putting action onto the player on the button. He bet 800 and saw action quickly fold back to Wilkie, who was the last line of defense. Wilkie called.

The turn came {k-Clubs} and Wilkie put out a bet of 1,000. His opponent folded and he took down the pot, teasing {9-Diamonds} as the chips were shipped his way.

"Welcome to the table, sir," said tablemate Jason Welch with a smile as Wilkie won the first hand he was dealt for the afternoon. "We're not that friendly to everyone, you know!" Welch added.

Wheeler Makes the Nuts

Mike Wheeler
Mike Wheeler

More than 12,000 was in the middle with three-handed action on a completed board of {2-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{7-Spades}. Thomas Fuller checked in the big blind and Andrew Miller followed suit under the gun, putting action onto Mike Wheeler in the cutoff, who fired out a bet.

"Eighty-one (hundred)?" asked Fuller upon seeing the chips hit the felt. The dealer confirmed and Fuller tossed in chips to match with Miller wasting no time folding behind to take the hand to showdown.

"I have the nuts," announced Wheeler as he tabled {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}. Fuller mucked.

"You and your flushed," said Miller as Wheeler took down the pot, bringing him to nearly 49,000 in the closing minutes of Level 2.

Zach Gutierrez

Around 10,000 was in the middle on a board reading {k-Spades}{10-Clubs}{j-Spades}{7-Hearts} and action was heads up between Greg Geller in middle position and Zach Gutierrez, who was in the cutoff. Geller check-called a bet of 3,500 from Gutierrez and the river {2-Hearts} completed the board.

Geller checked again and Gutierrez fired out 10,000. Geller thought for a few minutes and then tossed his two remaining T5,000 chips onto the felt to make the call.

Gutierrez tabled {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} for top set and it proved to be good for the pot as Geller quickly pushed his cards forward from the one-seat to muck them.

Faecher Flips Well

Level 5 : 300/500, 500 ante
Barry Faecher
Barry Faecher

Barry Faecher opened on the button and was three-bet to 3,600 by Mike Wheeler in the big blind. Faecher four-bet jammed for 19,400 and Wheeler called, sending the two off to the races.

Barry Faecher: {8-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Mike Wheeler: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

The flop {q-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{9-Spades} left Faecher out in front but he picked up three more outs to sweat after the turn {9-Hearts} hit the board. The board did wind up double pairing on the river {7-Spades}, but it was not enough for Faecher's hand to be bested and he scored the double as a result.

Brink and Geller Hit Six Figures

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Lawrence Brink
Lawrence Brink

All of the chips went into the middle preflop between an all-in player in middle position and Lawrence Brink, who had a covering stack on the button.

All-In Player: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Lawrence Brink: {6-Spades}{6-Hearts}

The all-in player found four more outs to Broadway after the flop {k-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{10-Spades} and the turn {k-Clubs} gave him three more counterfeit outs. However, the river {7-Clubs} failed to hit any of it and Brink scored the pot and the knockout as a result, taking him over 100K in the process.

Greg Geller was also seen at a new seat after being eliminated on his first bullet of the day. He has already chipped up over 100,000 as well, making him one of the top stacks in the room.

Keeline Wakes Up With Aces

Level 7 : 400/800, 800 ante
Ben Keeline
Ben Keeline

Sherman Wu raised to 2,000 in early position and was called by a player on his direct left. Roman Mai called in the hijack as well before Ben Keeline three-bet to 9,600 in the small blind. Wu then four-bet to 17,200 and the player on his left five-bet jammed.

"How much is that?" asked Keeline. The dealer counted a total of 24,700 and Keeline matched it with Wu verbalizing a call behind.

Both players checked the flop {5-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} and the turn came {j-Clubs}. Keeline reached for a stack of chips and set it onto the felt, prompting Wu to ask for a count that was totaled to 36,000. Wu folded.

"Am I dead?" asked the all-in player as he showed {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}. Keeline tabled {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}.

"I'm not dead!" exclaimed the player, seeing he had one shot at a two outer to stay alive. Unfortunately for him, it did not fall as the river {6-Hearts} completed the runout and scored Keeline the pot of roughly 75,000.

Palumbo Picks Off the Bluff

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Rocco Palumbo
Rocco Palumbo

Jason Welch opened in middle position and received calls from Rocco Palumbo in the cutoff and the player on the button. Welch checked the flop {6-Spades}{j-Spades}{7-Diamonds} and Palumbo took the initiative, firing a bet that only the player on the button called.

Both players checked the turn {k-Spades} and the river came {4-Clubs}. Palumbo checked again and his opponent over-bet jammed for 35,400. Palumbo thought for a bit and then found a call.

All-In Player: {a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}
Rocco Palumbo: {j-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

Palumbo's call with second pair proved best against his opponent's ace high and he scored the pot and knockout as a result, vaulting his stack up to 172,000 in the process.

Seventy on Day 1a

Level 10 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Bally's Colorado Poker Championship
Bally's Colorado Poker Championship

The dinner break has now come and gone, bringing about the beginning of Level 10 and the closing of the late registration period to go along with it. Two more players appear to have registered on the dinner break, bringing the Day 1a total number of entries up to 70 with 25 players remaining.

Five more levels are set to play to their completion unless 12% of the field (eight players) remain prior to that time.
