Aces for Smith

Level 17 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Dan Smith
Dan Smith

Dan Smith opened with a raise from first position to 90,000. A couple seats over, Ilari Sahamies reraised to 250,000 from middle position. Action folded back around to Smith and he made the call.

The flop was {J-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{5-Spades} and Smith checked. Sahamies fired 375,000 and Smith made the call.

Fourth street was the {J-Hearts} and both players checked. After the {Q-Diamonds} fell on the river, both checked again.

Smith showed the {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} for two pair, aces and jacks. Sahamies held the {A-Spades}{10-Hearts} for ace high and lost the pot.

Jim McCrink Eliminated in 8th Place (€122,960)

Jim McCrink
Jim McCrink

Action folded around to Dan Smith in the small blind and he eyed up Jim McCrink's stack in the big. Eventually Smith tossed out a handful of black T100,00 chips and put the pressure on his opponent. McCrink squeezed out his cards, stacked his chips, and then slid them into the pot.

Showdown
McCrink: {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}
Smith: {K-Hearts}{8-Hearts}

McCrink woke up with a decent pair and was out in front, but the {A-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{6-Clubs} flop made things interesting as it gave Smith the nut-flush draw. The anticipation was intense around the Main Stage as the dealer burned and turned the {4-Hearts}. Smith hit his flush to leave his opponent drawing dead.

After the {K-Diamonds} was put out on the rvier for good measure, McCrink shook hands with Smith and took his leave in eighth place, good for €122,960.

Chop It Up

Level 17 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante

Mike Watson moved all in for 333,000 from the cutoff seat and Talal Shakerchi called from the big blind. Watson held the {A-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} and Shakerchi the {A-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}. The board ran out {10-Spades}{9-Hearts}{8-Spades}{J-Hearts}{6-Hearts} and the two chopped up the pot.

Watson Doubles; Still Short

A short-stacked Mike Watson moved all in for 245,000 from early position and was called by Dan Smith in the cutoff. The button and blinds both got out of the way, and the cards were turned on their backs:

Showdown

Watson{K-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Smith{K-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}

Watson was dominating Smith, who happened to be his roommate here in Barcelona. The board ran an uneventful {J-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{J-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}, and Watson doubled, though he is still the short stack at the table.

Alvarado Overcomes Smith's Kings

JC Alvarado limped from early position and inspired Erik Seidel and Mike Watson to do the same from the button and small blind respectively. Chip leader Dan Smith then exercised his option in the big blind with a raise to 200,000, which only Alvarado called.

Smith fired a continuation-bet of 175,000 on the {5-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{4-Spades}, Alvarado called, and the {7-Spades} appeared on the turn. This time Smith checked, and Alvarado took the opportunity to bet 260,000. Smith made the call and then both players checked the {4-Clubs} river. Alvarado tabled {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for a pair of aces, which bested the {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} of Smith.

Talal Shakerchi Eliminated in 7th Place (€138,300)

Talal Shakerchi
Talal Shakerchi

On a flop of {J-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}, Ilari Sahamies checked from the big blind and opened the door for Talal Shakerchi to bet 155,000 from the under-the-gun position. Sahamies responded with a check-raise to 425,000, and Shakerchi wasted little time in moving all in for 1.13 million.

Sahamies, who began the hand with just a bit more than his opponent, asked for a count and thought for a solid minute before making the call.

Showdown
Shakerchi: {9-Spades}{10-Spades}
Sahamies: {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}

Shakerchi was a 2-1 dog with his open-ended straight draw, which wouldn't come in as both the {7-Spades} turn and {10-Hearts} river blanked. With that, Shakerchi exited in seventh place for €138,300, while Sahamies received a virtual double.
