Kenny Smith Leads All at Day's End; 21 players Move on to Day 2

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Kenny Smith
Kenny Smith

At the end of Day 1b of the 2016 Hollywood Poker Open Columbus $1,115 Regional Main Event, Kenny Smith bagged the chip lead with 509,500 in chips. Not only did Smith finish atop the survivors from Day 1b, but he also surpassed the 282,500 Jeremy Detamore put in the bag on Day 1a, making him an overwhelming leader going into Day 2.

When registration closed, the final numbers of entries tallied in at 249, creating a $249,000 prize pool, of which $59,756 will be awarded to the winner.

Smith was the chip leader from his early moves, but after he won the biggest pot of the tournament, he became a clear favorite.

The action started preflop when another player opened to 3,500. Two players called before the action fell to Smith, and he reraised to 26,000. The player to his left cold-called, everyone else folded, and action was heads up. Smith then led the {7-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} flop for 45,000, and his opponent called.

The turn was the {10-Diamonds}, and Smith checked. His opponent bet 60,000, which sent Smith to the tank. He eventually moved all in, and his opponent called. Smith had {k-}{k-} against the {q-}{q-} of his opponent. The river was a blank to give Smith the pot.

If it wasn't for Smith, Sai Mudduluru might have been the chip leader, but nonetheless he still logged in a strong showing and will enter Day 2 with 237,500.

Joe Ebanks also booked his spot on Day 2. After an uneventful Day 1a, Ebanks was back at it for Day 1b. He got a healthy stack early and rode that wave to a middle-of-the-pack stack with 135,500, enough to make an impact in Day 2.

Thila Narayanan (218,000), Chris Meyers (199,500), and Jeff Gregg (183,500) rounded out the top five stacks from Day 1b.

The 21 survivors from Day 1b will join the 16 from Day 1a and play until the newest HPO champion is crowned. With only 37 left, Day 2 will start only 10 players away from the money. The restart is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. local time on Sunday, and you can stay tuned to PokerNews.com for all the action.

Smith Breaks 400,000 In Tournaments Biggest Pot

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Kenny Smith
Kenny Smith

Kenny Smith just won a massive pot that was over 400,000. He played the biggest pot of the tournament so far and won with pocket kings.

The action started preflop when another player opened to 3,500 and two players called before the action fell to Smith. Smith reraised to 26,000 and the player to his left cold-called. The remaining players folded, leaving the two heads up.

Smith led the {7-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} flop for 45,000 and his opponent flat called.

The turn was the {10-Diamonds} and Smith checked. His opponent bet 60,000 and sent Smith to the tank. He eventually went all in and his opponent called. Smith had {k-}{k-} against the {q-}{q-} of his opponent.

The river was a blank and Smith won the pot and cemented the far-and-away chip lead. With two levels left, he might be able to cruise into Day 2 barring any major setbacks and will likely be the chipleader entering Day 2.

Roberts Doubles Through Kilgour

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Chris Roberts
Chris Roberts

Chris Roberts just doubled through Bob Kilgour and is doing his best to make a run at the HPO Columbus leaderboard.

Roberts was all in with {a-}{k-} and caught an ace on the river to survive. The winner of the leaderboard gets a seat to the $2,500 championship event in June at the M Resort and Spa. However, if he wins the tournament it won't matter, because he would win that seat and the leaderboard seat would go to the current leader.

Meet Iverson Cotton Snuffer

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 100 ante
Iverson Cotton Snuffer
Iverson Cotton Snuffer

Iverson Cotton Snuffer might be the most colorful player in the field here on Day 1b. He says that he once won a poker tournament 40 years ago and that he failed third grade math so many times that they kicked him out for not shaving.

The truth is, he finished third in this event last year and has $401,637 in career earnings. He has three cashes so far this year for almost $45,000 in earnings. He's sitting at just under 50,000 chips with three-and-a-half levels to go tonight.

Kennedy's Role Reversal

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
Mike Kennedy
Mike Kennedy

Earlier in the day, Mike Kennedy was walking away from his seat thinking he was eliminated, or at least about to be. Now he is among the chip leaders.

Mike Kennedy got in a three-way all in with Kwynn Richards and Gerald Will and thought his {5-Spades}{4-Spades} was never going to keep him in the tournament. Richards had {a-Spades}{q-Spades}, for a better flush draw and Will had a set of eights.

The flop was an eight with two spades and the three players got all their chips in. Kennedy was the one behind and at risk, but a {4-Diamonds} on the river gave him a pair, when both his and Richards' flush draws didn't get there.

Fast forward to a few levels later, Kennedy is still in and cruising pretty well and now he's busted Will.

The two got all in preflop and Kennedy had aces, while Will had queens. The board was no help to Will and he hit the rail. Kennedy stacked the pot and is sitting among the bigger stacks at this stage of the tournament.

For Your Consideration

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Marc Smith
Marc Smith

Marc Smith casually joked that he was the 78,000th ranked player in the world. In fact, he is the 79,218th ranked player according to GPI.

The LA Sunset might not be lining up to draft him for next year's GPL, but he booked a win in a PLO tournament at HPO Columbus last year and a fifth place finish in a deepstack event as well. He's sitting just under $5,000 in career earnings and is part of what makes HPO special.

While there are some big names making their way through the HPO fields, there are several local players and home game heroes that are making their mark as well. Smith is just one of those players. Smith is off to a decent start so far today.

He was one of four players that saw a flop of {k-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{5-Spades} for 300. The action checked to him and he bet 1,300. His opponents folded and he took down the small pot, uncontested pot. So far he's added about 4,000 to his starting stack.

Run It Again, HPO Columbus Day 1b is Today

HPO Logo
HPO Logo

The second flight of HPO's Columbus Regional Main Event starts today at 11:15 local time. A field of about 200 players is expected to show and and compete for a shot at Day 2. The Day 1b players that make it to Day 2 will join the 16 players from Day 1a Sunday at 12;15 local time and play for a shot at an HPO Title and a first prize of somewhere near $70,000.

Jeremy Detamore finished in the front of the pack last night with 282,500 and HPO Ambassador Chris Moneymaker, who took a hit on the very last hand of the night, will come into Day 2 carrying 54,500 chips. He got all in with {a-}{q-} versus the pocket tens of Josh Lowing (132,500). Moneymaker couldn't catch up and will need to do some work tomorrow.

Today's field will be almost twice as big with even more chips to go around. There were some giant swings throughout the day yesterday, so there are sure to be at least a few surprises in store today. Players will have to navigate their way through 14 50-minute levels if they want a seat in Day 2. A few players got up early this morning to play in a turbo satellite, and will be joining the field a little late, but with plenty of time to make their mark on Day 1b.

Follow all the action at pokernews.com and see photos and updates from the field as HPO's Regional Main Event in Columbus gets one step closer to crowning the latest HPO Champion. The winner of this event will also book a seat to the HPO Championship event in Las Vegas. The $2,500 event will be at the M Resort and Spa in June.
