HPO St. Louis Regional Main Event Day 1b is Today

Hollywood Poker Open (HPO)
Hollywood Poker Open (HPO)

Today is Day 1b of the HPO St. Louis Regional Main Event begins today at 11:15 am local time. Day 1a saw 74 entries and the field played down to ten players. Today's flight is expected to be bigger and the runners will be looking for a spot in Day 2 to join the likes of HPO Ambassador Chris Moneymaker (125,000) and Day 1a chipleader Bill Haner (243,500).

Last year's champion was Linda Lieder, who took home $48,440 for first, not bad for her first ever cash. She busted relatively early in the day yesterday, but may return for one more chance to defend her title today. Kyle Cartwright, who finished second last year, was also in the field yesterday. He was eliminated in the middle of Day 1a, after he doubled up HPO Lawrenceburg first-place finisher Josh Lowing. Neither made it through to Day 2.

Players will play 14 50-minute levels with a one-hour dinner break after level 8. Registration will stay open until the start of level 9.

Stay tuned to pokernews.com for all the action from Day 1b as players do their best to make Day 2.

Longowa Doubles

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
John Longowa
John Longowa

John Longowa was in a three-way pot, and by the end of the hand he would double up, cracking the aces of his opponent.

Three players saw the flop for 3,000 a piece. They all checked the flop and the board read {k-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} before betting resumed. Longowa bet 4,000 when the action came to him and the small blind called, while the third player folded.

The river was the {4-Diamonds} and the action checked to Longowa who shoved all in for 13,000 into the almost 20,000 pot. His opponent called and was understandably upset when he saw the {j-}{10-} of Longowa. He turned over pocket aces and whipped them into the muck and Longowa took down the pot.

Sam Doveikis
Sam Doveikis

One hand after eliminated Shiva Nomula, Sam Doveikis eliminated another player.

Doveikis and Nomula were all in on the flop, both with two pair, but Doveikis had the better two pair.

On the next hand, Doveikis opened to 800 from under the gun and got two callers. The flop came {2-Clubs}{2-Spades}{5-Diamonds} and he led for 2,100. The first player folded, but the next put the rest of his chips in, going all in for 2800 and Doveikis called.

Doveikis had {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} against the {8-Hearts}{8-Spades} of his opponent. Doveikis stayed ahead and knocked out his second player in as many hands.

Gerding Your Coins

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Bill Gerding
Bill Gerding

Bill Gerding just got two big hands in a row, and on the second he busted Jason Matthews.

On the first hand, Zac Campbell opened to 800 in middle position, and two players called before Gerding made it 2,400 from the small blind. Campbell was the lone caller and the two were heads up to the flop.

The flop was {6-Hearts}{8-Spades}{3-Spades} and Gerding quickly bet 4,000. Campbell called.

The turn was the {a-Diamonds} and Gerding took a beat before acting. He bet 6,000 and Campbell folded. Gerding slapped two kings on the table.

"That card scared me," he said.

The very next hand, Vadim Kleydman opened to 700 and Gerding was on the button. He made it 2,100 and Jason Matthews called from the small blind.

The flop came {5-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and Gerding led for 4,000. Matthews called.

When the board paired with the {5-Spades} on the turn, Gerding went all in for about 45,000. Matthews went into the tank. He kept talking to Gerding, trying to get some kind of read.

"I flopped two pair," he said.

"We you obviously didn't have the five," replied Gerding.

"You can only have an overpair, do you have an overpair?" asked Matthews.

Gerding didn't respond.

"Show me if I fold?" Matthews asked.

Again, Gerding offered no response.

"Okay," Matthews said, tossing in a call.

Indeed Gerding had an over pair, two queens and Matthews was looking for help, holding {j-}{7-}. It didn't come, instead the river was the {4-Hearts} and that sent Matthews to the rail.

High Five For Kim

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
David Kim
David Kim

David Kim just eliminated Benjamin Smith when Kim made a straight flush on the river to bust Smith.

The action started when Kim made is 1,200 preflop under the gun. He got two callers, Smith and Bryan Moon.

The flop came {j-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{5-Hearts} and Kim bet out for 2,100 again. Smith called and Moon folded.

The turn was the {6-Hearts} and Kim led again, this time making it 4,000 for Smith to continue. Smith called

The river was the {9-Hearts} and Kim bet for a third time. He made it 10,000 and put the pressure on Smith. Smith thought for about 20 seconds and then shipped 30,000 over Kim's bet.

Kim snap called and immediately turned over {7-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for a straight flush. Smith was on the short end, with {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts} and Kim had him covered, so it was the rail for Smith.

"I've never gotten a straight flush before," said Kim.

He told the floorperson and they gave him a high-five, while grabbing the seat card to fill Smith's vacated seat.

Nomula Triples Up, Bryant Out Shortly After Dinner

Level 9 : 400/800, 75 ante
Three Way Action between Jessie Bryant, Gene Bones and Shiva Nomula
Three Way Action between Jessie Bryant, Gene Bones and Shiva Nomula

Gene Bones, yes his name is Gene Bones just busted Jessie Bryant and had a hand in tripling up Shiva Nomula.

The dealer was sorting out which chips went where and Nomula sat with two queens in front of him, the sign that he was to be awarded most of the chips on the {6-}{6-}{j-}{j-}{2-} board.

Jessie Bryant was standing, trying to figure out whether Bones had him covered or not. Bryant's hand, pocket fives was face down in front of him, indicating he had lost the hand when his pocket pair got counterfeited and Bones won the side pot with ace high.

Bones indeed had Bryant covered and he headed to the rail shortly after the dinner break. Nomula, who was all in first and waiting for the other players to finish the action, was convinced he had lost the hand when Bones and Bryant got all the chips in on the paired board.

Larry Edwards

Larry Edwards has been in the same seat since the start of the tournament. He currently has 56,000 chips.

He says this is his first time playing in a big poker tournanemt, in fact, it sounds like this is is first tournament other than the satellite that put him here.

He won his seat in a $50 satellite back in February and just busted his neighbor Tim Vance. He is a St. Louis local whose poker experience to date has mostly been in home games.

"If everyone wants to chop right now, I'll take it," he said.

Josh Turner Claims Overall Lead After Day 1b of HPO St. Louis Regional Main Event

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Joshua Turner
Joshua Turner

Josh Turner finished atop the 33 remaining players from the Day 1b flight of the Hollywood Poker Open St. Louis Regional Main Event. Not only that, but his stack of 277,000 in chips surpassed that of Day 1a chip leader Bill Haner (243,500) to give Turner the overall lead heading into Day 2.

Turner has had his fair share of success in St. Louis, his hometown. Of his 12 live tournament victories, five of them have come in the Gateway to the West, including three in HPO events. Most recently, Turner took down a $300 side event during this HPO stop, topping a field of 62 players to win $5,312.

His biggest win also came from The Lou. In February 2015, he won the World Series of Poker Circuit $1,675 Main Event for $136,945.

All in all, Turner has just under $700,000 in lifetime earnings from live events.

Lori Lindley had a solid day and finished with 192,500. Her poker résumé is almost the complete opposite of Turner's. She has just $8,367 dollars in live tournament earnings, only five cashes, and one win. A deep run here could certainly mean a new career best. Nine days ago, she finished third in an HPO side event for $3,372.

Don Baumer (179,500), Paul Fehlig (159,000), and Mark Andrada (157,000) round out the top five finishers from Day 1b.

Kyle Cartwright is one of the most successful players remaining in the field, with $1.24 million in live tournament winnings, a WSOP bracelet and six — yes, six — WSOP Circuit gold rings. He finished second place in this same event last year, but will need to put in some some work tomorrow as he will start with only 33,000 in chips. He will have the shortest stack to enter the day, but will still have 10 big blinds to work with. It's not much, but it's something.

With a field of 257 entries, this year's HPO St. Louis $1,115 Regional Main Event saw an impressive uptick in size with 84 more entries than last year for a growth of 49%. The prize pool generated was $257,000, with first place tipping the scales at $61,676. The top 27 finishers will reach the money and earn a min-cash of $2,827.

Day 2 will start on Sunday at 12:15 p.m. local time. Be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews to see who will take home the title here in St. Louis.
