Pickup Trucks Competition on Day 1a

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Jason Pickup
Jason Pickup

Heartland Poker Tour The Meadows $1,100 Main Event got rolling Thursday with the first of three starting flights, and Jason Pickup made like his namesake and trucked the competition, bagging nearly 13 starting stacks.

Pickup is one of just eight players who bagged, as a small turnout of just 53 entries filled a few tables in the lower level of the Pittsburgh-area casino. The players were a couple of bustouts away from the hard stop at six when the night ended and the final six hands were dealt at every table.

Short early on, Pickup doubled up when top pair held against a pair and the nut flush draw, and he started rocketing up by flopping a couple of sets later in the day. Finally, to close things out, he picked up aces in an opportune spot as a former second-place finisher in this event, John Yocca, jammed about 20 big blinds with ace-queen under the gun.

That enabled Pickup to finish with 387,500.

Chuck Scaglione (252,000), Doug Krency (234,500), James Trott (191,500), Griffin Abel (180,000), Michael Iannace (161,500), Carl Householder (125,500) and Kyle Stapleton (68,000) were the others advancing.

Scaglione picked off a triple-barrel bluff from MSPT champ Chris Meyers near the end of the night to take most of his chips and lead to an elimination of one of the more accomplished players in the field.

Others going bust included Greg Wood, Andrew Campbell and two-time WSOP bracelet winner Adam Friedman.

All will have more chances to bag starting on Day 1b, which gets under way Friday at noon local time. PokerNews will be on hand for another 15 levels of live reporting, so come back then for more coverage of the HPT.

Yocca Busted

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
John Yocca
John Yocca

Jason Pickup opened for 10,000 under the gun and got shoved on by John Yocca. It was 59,600 and Pickup tank-folded.

The next hand, Yocca ripped in and action folded to Pickup, who announced a call and tabled {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}. Yocca was smashed with {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades} and the board ran {j-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{9-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{j-Hearts} to send the pot Pickup's way.

"Foul" Beat Busts Campbell

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
HPT The Meadows
HPT The Meadows

Michael Iannace had a bet of 5,000 in front of him on {9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} and big blind Andrew Campbell had check-raised to 16,800. However, Campbell was now facing a three-bet all in for his remaining 60,000 or so. He went deep into the tank.

"Should I gamble for a big stack?" he asked himself.

He continued to think until Adam Friedman called a clock after nearly thee minutes. Campbell allowed his countdown to hit two before splashing in chips and showing {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}.

Iannace was dominated with {k-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} but turned a {k-Hearts}. The river was a blank: {j-Clubs}.

"Nice hand," Campbell immediately said.

"I'm sorry, dude," Iannace said. "That was a good call."

"That was foul," someone else said.

Yocca Knocks Two Out

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
John Yocca
John Yocca

John Yocca just raked in a massive amount of chips after getting his {a-}{a-} all in preflop versus two opponents. One player had about 12,000 and was in with {q-}{j-}. The second player had just sat down and was dealt {10-}{10-}, which would be both his first and last hand for his tournament entry. Yocca is now over 100,000.

Recent Champ Wood Busted

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
Greg Wood, pictured at a different event.
Greg Wood, pictured at a different event.

If Greg Wood, who just won HPT Lawrenceburg for about $120,000, is to win a second straight HPT title, it's going to take at least a second shell.

Three players saw a {2-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{k-Hearts} flop and the first two checked to Wood, who bet 2,600 from the button into about 4,000. Chuck Scaglione came along from the small blind but Adam Friedman popped it to 7,500 in the hijack. Wood thought a bit and tossed in his 15,200. Scaglione instantly moved all in and Friedman folded with a sigh.

Chuck Scaglione: {2-Spades}{2-Diamonds}
Greg Wood: {k-Spades}{j-Clubs}

Wood was cooked without runner-runner, but he did pick up a chance on the {4-Spades} turn. He asked for a king but the {5-Clubs} river didn't do it.

After a week's worth of prelim events, it's time for the 2019 Heartland Poker Tour The Meadows $1,100 Main Event to get under way just outside of Pittsburgh. Thursday will see the first of three starting flights kick off the $250,000 guaranteed Main Event, with subsequent flights scheduled for Friday and Saturday before fields combine for Sunday's Day 2.

Last year, Mike O'Neill topped a field of 422 to pocket $93,340 and a $3,500 HPT Championship package.

For this year's event, cards are scheduled to fly at 2 p.m. local time for the opening flight. Players will receive 30,000 in starting chips and begin at Level 1 (100/100), progressing to Level 15 (2,000/4,000/4,000) or until 13 percent of the field remains. Big blind ante begins in Level 4.

Registration remains open until the start of Level 10 and players may reenter as many times as they wish.
