Welcome to Day 1a of HPT Hollywood St. Louis!

HPT St. Louis
HPT St. Louis

Season XVI of the Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) continues rolling on this weekend, as the $1,650 Main Event at Hollywood St. Louis with a $400,000 Guarantee, kicks off today at 2 p.m. with the first of three starting flights.

Mike Shin topped a field of 480 players here last August, earning $160,632 after beating 2019 HPT Player of the Year Nick Pupillo heads-up. Last March's iteration of this event saw Bill Byrnes best a field of 444 entrants for $148,547. Keith Heine (2nd - $91,735), Kou Vang (5th - $31,978) and Tim Burden (7th - $20,673) were just a few of the heavy hitters at a talented final table that Byrnes had to overcome.

Players will receive 30,000 in starting chips, and Day 1 features a total of fifteen 40-minute levels. There will be a fifteen-minute break after every two hours of play, and a 60-minute dinner break will take place after Level 9. Registration and a single re-entry option are open for players through the dinner break (approximately 9:30 p.m. for today's flight). The field will play until the end of Level 15, or until 13% of the field rounded down remains, whichever comes first.

There are two other starting flights available for prospective players, as Friday's Day 1b kicks off at 2 p.m. local time, while Day 1c will commence at Noon on Saturday, February 22nd. All players that manage to bag up a stack will return on Sunday at 11 a.m. local time to play down to the final table of nine. Monday's televised final table will resume at Noon, and the public is welcome to come and watch the action, which will also be streamed on Twitch on a short delay.

Will Shin and Byrnes make another run to grab a second HPT Hollywood St. Louis title? Or will HPT legends Craig Casino, Shawn Roberts, or Mike O'Neill lay claim to the title? Stay tuned right here to PokerNews all weekend long, as we bring you all the action straight from the tournament floor.

Henrichs Looking For Another Big Day 1 Stack

Level 1 : 100/100, 0 ante
Joshua Henrichs
Joshua Henrichs

One player seated in today's field already has some recent success in building up a stack on Day 1a of an HPT event, as Joshua Henrichs bagged up the chip lead in the Season XV HPT $2,500 Championship Event here at Hollywood St. Louis in November of last year. Henrichs fell just short of earning a cash, but is already back in action here today.

In one recent hand, Henrichs checked a {q-Hearts}{a-Spades}{6-Clubs}{j-Spades} board from the small blind, as did the big blind and button. The {2-Diamonds} fell on the river, and Henrichs bet 600 into the 2,000 chip pot. Both of his opponent folded, and Henrichs took down the pot.

HPT Player of the Year Pupillo Building Back Up

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
Nick Pupillo
Nick Pupillo

Nick Pupillo, who won the Heartland Poker Tour's Season XV Player of the Year race to earn a $10,000 package towards buy-ins and accommodations for Season XVI, got off to a slow start here in today's Day 1a flight, but caught a little heat in the last two hands to start climbing back towards starting stack.

Hand #1:

Joseph Brose raised to 800 from the hijack, and Pupillo quickly three-bet to 2,500 from the cutoff. Action folded back to Brose, who took a second before letting his hand go.

Hand #2:

Pupillo opened to 800 from the hijack, and everyone folded.

We'll be keeping an eye on Pupillo throughout the day, as he looks to finish one spot higher than the last time he cashed an HPT Hollywood Casino St. Louis Main Event, August's $1,650 Main Event where he finished runner-up to current MSPT Player of the Year Mike Shin.

Season XV HPT $2,500 Championship Event runner-up Christopher Audrain raised to 700 from under the gun, and was called by Michael McKuin in middle position, Cory Bogert in the hijack, Jeffrey Schroeder on the button, and Shawn Powers in the big blind.

Action checked to Bogert on a {10-Spades}{4-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} flop, and he bet 2,200. Schroeder called, and action folded back to McKuin, who check-raised to 6,200. Bogert folded and Schroeder called.

McKuin bet 7,000 on the {7-Spades} turn, and Schroeder tanked for a minute, then called.

The {q-Clubs} fell on the river, and McKuin bet 13,000, leaving himself just 6,000 behind. Schroeder, who had a similar stack, tanked for a few moments before folding.

Christopher Audrain checked a {5-Spades}{q-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} flop from the big blind, and Jeffrey Schroeder bet 1,100 into a pot of 2,500 from the cutoff. Audrain called.

Audrain check-called another 1,100 chip bet from Schroeder on the {2-Hearts} turn, and the {k-Diamonds} fell on the river. Audrain checked and Schroeder upped his bet to 3,000. Audrain called, only to muck after Schroeder tabled {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs} for kings and queens.

Hand #1:

Gerald Claunch raised to 1,800 from early position, and action folded to Michael Pilla in the big blind. He three-bet shoved for around 18,000, and Claunch quickly folded.

Hand #2:

The very next hand, Joseph Brose raised to 800 from the cutoff, and Pilla jammed again, this time for a little over 20,000.

"Can you spread the pot, please?" Michael Esquivel said with a grin in the big blind before folding, and Brose quickly followed suit.

Three-Way Chop in Event #1: $350 No Limit Hold'em

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
Ian Nelson, Nhut Nguyen, and Brian Tracy
Ian Nelson, Nhut Nguyen, and Brian Tracy

The opening event of the HPT Hollywood St. Louis tournament series was Event #1: $350 No Limit Hold'em, a tournament that boasted a $200,000 guarantee. With a total of 917 entrants, including a staggering 511 entrants in the final flight, a final prize pool of $275,100 was created, easily beating the guarantee.

94 players were able to walk away with a piece of the prize pool, and a few of those lucky enough to cash include Mary Sturges (19th - $1,876), Charles Wells (38th - $1,290), Corey Fleming (58th - $1,010), Neil Patel (62nd - $1,010), and Mike Rieck (85th - $750).

In the end, the final three players struck a deal that saw Nhut Nguyen ($36,518) take the title and trophy, while Brian Tracy ($37,305) and Ian Nelson ($34,318) left with substantial chunks of the prize pool. Nguyen took the rungood from the opening event win and went on to take down the very next event, Event #2: $300 No Limit Hold'em Heads Up for another $5,224. Nelson wouldn't rest on his laurels either, as he was able to take down Event $7: $300 No Limit Hold'em w/ $100 Bounties for $6,362 later in the series.

Hoeft Takes One Out

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
Danny Hoeft
Danny Hoeft

Danny Hoeft limped in from under the gun, as did the player next to act. A middle position player jammed for 4,900, and action folded back to Hoeft, who called.

"Why not?" the other player said before making the call as well.

Action checked to the turn of a {j-Hearts}{10-Spades}{7-Spades}{6-Hearts} board, where Hoeft bet 5,000. His opponent for the side pot folded, and the remaining two players tabled their hands.

Middle Position: {k-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Danny Hoeft: {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}

Hoeft's nines improved to a straight on the {8-Clubs} river, and he eliminated his opponent.

Cory Bogert raised to 1,000 from the cutoff, and the button called. Jeffrey Schroeder three-bet shoved for 15,600 from the small blind, and Bogert folded, while the button made the call.

Jeffrey Schroeder: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}
Opponent: {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}

Schroeder found a good time to wake up with rockets, and he got no sweat on a {7-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{7-Spades}{8-Clubs} board for the double.

At the same time at another table, Ian Nelson had his last chips in with pocket nines preflop, but ran into pocket queens and found no help to bust.

Gerald Claunch checked a {6-Clubs}{j-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{2-Spades} board from under the gun, and Joseph Brose bet 10,000 into a pot of 15,000 from the button. Claunch quickly called.

The {a-Spades} fell on the river, and Claunch wasted little time in betting 25,000, more than half of Brose's remaining stack. Brose thought for just a moment, then folded, saying, "Wow..." as he released his hand.
