Another Cooler! Phillips Doubles Up

The Spades Bracket has been full of "set-up" hands. Dennis Phillips and Erick Lindgren, moved to the back feature table after the elimination of Phil Ivey, got all the chips in on a flop of {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}{3-Spades}. Lindgren tabled bottom two pair, {k-}{3-}, but Phillips had a set of aces! Phillips doubled up and took the lead after the turn {5-Spades} left Lindgren drawing dead.

Mortensen Comes From Behind

Carlos Mortensen, fresh off his 3rd-place finish at the WPT LA Poker Classic, found himself down to 10,000 chips in his match against Sam Trickett. Trickett opened the button to 1,600, then called Mortensen's three-bet shove. After the appropriate pause and set up for NBC's cameras the cards were on their backs.

Mortensen: {q-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Trickett: {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

Mortensen was in rough shape but hit a fortunate river card, {j-Clubs}{6-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. He rivered jacks and tens to double up to 20,000 and extend the match.

Quads Again?!

An extremely short-stacked Erick Lindgren moved in pre-flop with {6-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} and was called by Dennis Phillips' {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}. I think we've seen quads in every bracket so far today, so why not the Spades Bracket too?

Board: {k-Hearts}{6-Spades}{6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{q-Hearts}

"I got my flush!" Phillips joked. He doubled Lindgren up but still has the chip lead.

Trickett Run Down by the Matador

Sam Trickett and Carlos Mortensen have both been known to run like gods. So this match is a battle for run-good bragging rights. Mortensen moved all in on a {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} board, and Trickett, who had him slightly covered, made the call.

Mortensen: {10-Diamonds}{9-Spades} for two pair
Trickett: {q-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} for the flopped straight

The {2-Clubs} turn had Mortensen one card from elimination, but one card was plenty for the Matador. The {10-Spades} on the river filled his boat and left Trickett crippled.

Basebaldy Strikes Out

Eric Baldwin in happier times
Eric Baldwin in happier times

Eric "basebaldy" Baldwin was in rough shape when he put his life on the line with {q-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}. David Oppenheim's {k-Spades}{q-Spades} started out ahead and took an ever bigger lead on the {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{3-Spades} flop. The {j-Hearts} turn meant Baldwin was drawing to a chop. No luck from the {3-Clubs} river, and Baldwin fell to Oppenheim in yet another spades bracket-buster.

Trickett Staves Off Elimination

Down to 6,400, Sam Trickett open-shoved his button with {6-Clubs}{2-Hearts} and was called by Carlos Mortensen with pocket treys.

"How does Carlos get in with treys and NOT be flipping?" asked a railbird near the media desk.

How indeed, but despite his EV advantage Mortensen couldn't put Trickett away. The board came with two sixes, {6-Spades}{8-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{a-Spades}, to give Tricket a double-up to 13,000.
