High Roller Freeze-Out

Day 2 Started

Welcome to Day 2 of the Full Tilt Poker Merit Cyprus Classic

Welcome back to PokerNews for coverage of the second annual Full Tilt Poker Merit Cyprus Classic. It's almost time for Day 2 of the $25,000 High Roller Freeze-Out and our starting field of 36 has been whittled down to 24. An impressive field of well-known players and willing locals took to the felt yesterday and after six levels of play, David Benyamine emerged as the top stack in the room with 285,500.

A talented field is hot on his heels as November Niner Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi, WSOP Bracetlet winner Carter Phillips, and Jon "Pearljammer" Turner are within striking distance. Perhaps the most dangerous player in the world, Phil Ivey, is also still in the hunt and is certainly a threat in any event he enters.

The action is scheduled to commence at 5:00 pm local time, about a half hour from now, so be sure to follow the action right here on PokerNews.

November Niner Down

Candio ousted
Candio ousted

On the flop of {9-Spades}{6-Hearts}{5-Spades}, Filippo Candio moved all of his chips into the middle. Rony Jazzar made the call and held the {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}. Candio was drawing thin with the {K-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} and it looked like he was going to be eliminated by Jazzar.

The turn brought the {6-Spades} and the river completed the board with the {Q-Hearts}. Jazzar improved to a full house and earned the elimination, taking out the man who sits sixth on the WSOP Main Event leaderboard awaiting the November Nine. Candio can go and relax on the beach now, or he can sign up for one of the many side events going on here in Cyprus before the main event kicks off in a day.

Mizzi Semi-Bluffs His Way to the Beach

Sorel Mizzi gone
Sorel Mizzi gone

It wouldn't be long before David Benyamine got his chips back in a pot versus Sorel Mizzi after doubling up Ori Miller. Here's how it went down.

On the flop of {J-Spades}{8-Spades}{7-Hearts}, Benyamine check-called a bet of 13,200 from Mizzi. The turn added the {10-Spades} and Benyamine fired 29,000. Mizzi shoved all in for roughly 80,000 and Benyamine made the call holding a straight with the {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}. Mizzi was on the semi-bluff with his {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}.

He needed a spade that wasn't the {7-Spades} or {Q-Spades} to make a flush or a queen to make a broadway straight. The river couldn't find any of his outs when the {2-Clubs} fell and Mizzi saw his tournament come to an end. Just let Filippo Candio, Mizzi is not relegated to the beautiful beaches of Cyprus. Benyamine is back on top now with over 300,000 chips.

Rodoplu Doubles

From early position, Kfir Yamin raised to 2,500. Tafyun Rodoplu was in the cutoff seat and reraised all in for 43,100. Bassel Moussa made the call from the big blind and Yamin got out of the way, leaving Rodoplu's {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades} to battle with the {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} of Moussa.

The board ran out {7-Spades}{4-Spades}{3-Spades}{10-Spades}{9-Spades} and although Moussa made a set of tens, he lost to the flush that Rodoplu made to stay alive. Rodoplu doubled while Moussa dropped to 80,000 in chips.
