Moore Emerges as Winner of $370 Opening Event in Three-Way Chop After 16 Hours of Play

Level 36 : 250,000/500,000, 50,000 ante
Laura Moore
Laura Moore

Day 2 of the $370 Opening Flight began with 154 players and it culminated after nearly 16 hours of play with Laura Moore emerging as the winner after three players decided to chop.

Moore, James Canoles and Lalith Mannur were the three players left standing at the end of play after several hours of three handed play without many significant chip changes and little indication that big action was coming soon. Moore and Canoles were the larger stacks and agreed to chop to $65,000 for each and Mannur received close to $57,929 as he was the short stack for all of three-handed play.

For Moore it is the biggest score of her live poker career by quite a bit. The Virginia native had a supportive rail cheering her on throughout the entire final table as several local area players came out to support their fellow local.

Final Three Players Path to Chop

Moore was involved in multiple huge hands that propelled her ascension. The first of which included turning jacks full to crack the pocket aces and eliminate Paul Min after he called it off on the river to finish in 10th place. She then won a big hand against Richie Smith to effectively end his run as he was left with crumbs following her big call after a long tank. Shortly after that she got pocket aces at the right time against the pocket kings of Charles Gang to bust him in 6th place.

Canoles surged to a massive chip lead early in the day as he took multiple large pots away from start of day top five stack Columbus Randolph Jr. He did not look back from there as he held one third of all the chips in play at the final table at one point, helped in large part by the elimination of Nicholas Pham with two tables remaining when Pham shoved into Canoles with top pair only to get snapped off by the two pair of Canoles.

Mannur flew more under the radar as he hung on all day to a medium stack and was never truly at risk but also was never one of the big stacks. His most substantial hand was when he eliminated decent sized stack Christopher Pham Le in 9th place with pocket aces in a preflop all in.

Action of the Day

The start of day chip leaders were all dispatched earlier than expected as many players went up and down in the chip counts as eliminations were rapid on a wild day of action, as nearly half of the field of 154 was trimmed in just two hours.

As play got down to the final table, a chop was discussed with seven players left but it was not unanimous and play continued. Play slowed to a crawl when the final table became four handed as it took over hours for Justin Stonehill to be eliminated in 4th place. Three-handed play would also take a while as it took an hour and a half before a chop was decided.

Pokernews will resume coverage of the Potomac Poker Open on Wednesday, July 31 at 11 a.m. local time with the $370 Large Stack Big Bling Ante Event and then the $3300 Main Event on Friday. Laura Moore raised from the hijack. Charles Gang three-bet to 1,050,000 to her immediate left in the cutoff, and Moore waited for a moment before four-betting to 2,725,000, Gang then five-bet all in and Moore immediately called.

It was a classic cooler situation as Moore had the {a-Clubs}{a-Spades} while Gang had {k-}{k-}.

The board would not bring any sweat as it ran out blankly {5-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{10-Clubs}{3-Hearts} and Gang was eliminated from the tournament.

Moore Calls After Long Talkative Tank to Shatter Smith's Stack

Level 32 : 100,000/200,000, 25,000 ante
Laura Moore
Laura Moore

Laura Moore and Richie Smith saw a flop of {q-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{5-Hearts}. Moore bet and Smith quickly called.

The turn was the {j-Diamonds}. Moore made a bet of 900,000 and Smith moved all in. Moore went deep into the tank to consider the bet. Back and forth chatter ensued as both players talked about their holdings, nearly revealing what they had. A count was asked for and Smith's stack was counted multiple times by the dealer and other players to confirm that he had Moore covered slightly.

After a few minutes, Moore said the clock could be called on her if anybody wanted. Smith instantly called clock and the floor came over and began the countdown. Moore was surprised at the shortness of the clock's 25 seconds and questioned it but after about 10 seconds she called.

Smith showed the {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} and Moore showed the {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}. The river was the {3-Hearts} and Moore took down the huge pot. Smith expressed shock at how long it took Moore to call as most of his stack was stripped away from him.

Christopher Pham Le limped under the gun, Lalith Mannur raised to 550,000 in middle position. James Canoles called the raise on the button. Le three-bet shoved when it folded back to him. Mannur the re-shoved a slightly larger stack. Canoles hesitated a moment and folded.

"I think I need help" said Le, and indeed he did as his {9-}{9-} was crushed by the {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} of Mannur. The flop made things worse as it came {a-Hearts}{3-}{2-}, the turn was {j-} and the river came {2-} as Le was taken out in ninth place.

Paul Min Eliminated in 10th Place ($7,650)

Paul Min
Paul Min

Laura Moore raised to 350,000 from middle position. Out of the big blind, Paul Min three-bet to 1,150,000. Moore hesitated for a few moments before calling.

The flop came {8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}, both players checked tentatively. The turn was the {j-Diamonds}. Min bet 1,00,000 and Moore calling after a few moments of thought. The river came the {q-Clubs}. Min checked and Moore moved all in which sent Min deep into the tank.

Min replayed the hand in his head and took his time as it was huge decision with a lot of money riding on it. After getting a count and determining that Moore had him slightly covered, he thought for about two minutes before tossing some chips into the middle for the call.

Moore quickly turned over {j-Hearts}{j-Spades} for a turned full boat and Min shook his head and disgust and briefly flashed pocket aces before throwing them face down into the middle, his tournament abruptly ended in 10th place.

Richie Smith
Richie Smith

Action was picked up on the turn with the board reading {j-Clubs}{4-Spades}{6-Hearts}{8-Spades}. Richie Smith bet 575,000, Steven Cho thought about it for a while before electing to call. The river came the {6-Diamonds}. Smith quickly announced all in, which was the remainder of Cho's chips.

Cho thought about it for several moments as multiple people crowded around the table waiting for the decision. Eventually he folded.

Smith showed that he was bluffing with the {k-Clubs}{5-Spades} and raked in the pot.
