Mike Shavensky Eliminated in 10th Place ($3,355)

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Mike Shavensky - 10th Place
Mike Shavensky - 10th Place

Andre Smith opened the action for 35,000 and received a call from Bob De Wolfe. Mike Shavensky then moved all in for right around 170,000, and Kyle Gay moved all in over the top from the big blind. Both Smith and De Wolfe folded, and Shavensky seemed to know he was in trouble.

Shavensky: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}
Gay: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}

Indeed, Gay had woken up with the best hand in poker just at the right time. The {4-Spades}{2-Hearts}{q-Hearts} flop contained a paint card, but not the one Shavensky was looking for. The same can be said of the {K-Hearts} turn, meaning Shavensky was down to two outs headed to the river.

The dealer burned one last time and put out the {3-Diamonds}. Shavensky fell in tenth place while Gay, who was the short stack at the start of the final table, vaulted to over 600K!

Joe Cruz Eliminated in 9th Place ($4,062)

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Joe Cruz - 9th Place
Joe Cruz - 9th Place

We didn't pick up the action until the turn on a board reading {2-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}. Joe Cruz had jammed his last 105,000 or so holding the {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs} and ran smack dab into Pete Kaemmerlen's {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}. Apparently Kaemmerlen had gotten sneaky by flatting preflop.

Anyway, the {Q-Spades} failed to help Cruz on the river and he was dispatched in ninth place for $4,062.

Johannes Mueller Eliminated in 8th Place ($5,121)

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 2,000 ante
Johannes Mueller - 8th Place
Johannes Mueller - 8th Place

Prior to the 2014 Western New York Poker Challenge, Managing Editor Brett Collson put together a list of players to watch at the series, which included Johannes Mueller. Here is what he wrote:

Mueller knows how to navigate a field. According to the Hendon Mob, Mueller has 21 live tournament cashes to his credit. He made the final table in 11 of those tournaments, including the Seneca Fall Poker Classic Main Event last year (he finished fourth for $14,558). Mueller's first tournament win came a month later at the SuperStacks Hold'em Series at Turning Stone, and he kept the momentum going by winning a side event at the Borgata Winter Poker Open in January. Last month he placed seventh in a $1,100 Fallsview Poker Classic event for $18,134. That tournament was eventually won by red-hot tournament pro Mike Leah.

Mueller proved Collson right by making the final table here in the Main Event, but unfortunately his deep run came to an end in eighth place. In his final hand, Mueller moved all in from early position for 94,000 and Andre Smith called from the big blind.

Mueller: {a-Spades}{10-Spades}
Smith: {q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

Mueller got it in great, but the {2-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} flop evened things up a bit as Smith picked up a flush draw. The {K-Clubs} turn completed it, and Mueller was drawing dead headed to the {Q-Hearts} river.

Mueller, ever the gentleman, had three final words... "Good luck everyone."

Pete Kaemmerlen Eliminated in 7th Place ($6,534)

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 2,000 ante
Pete Kaemmerlen - 7th Place
Pete Kaemmerlen - 7th Place

It was a quick fall from grace for Pete Kaemmerlen. Not long ago he was sitting with more than a million in chips, but not he's sitting on the rail.

After losing a big pot to Bob De Wolfe, who hit runner-runner straight, Kaemmerlen played a big pot against Andre Smith.

We picked up the action on a {2-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{4-Clubs} flop with around 150,000 in the pot when Smith led out for 70,000 from the small blind and Travell Thomas folded from middle position. Kaemmerlen then raised to 205,000 from the button, which prompted Smith to move all in. Kaemmerlen, who had about 300,000 or so back, called off.

Kaemmerlen: {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Smith: {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

Smith had flopped the nuts, and the table seemed surprised he had led out with it. The {3-Hearts} turn left Kaemmerlen drawing dead, and after the {8-Spades} was put out on the river, Smith was pushed the massive pot.

"I donk bet the nuts for G-Money," Smith told us after the hand. G-Money will know what it means.

Travell Thomas Eliminated in 6th Place ($8,653)

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Travell Thomas - 6th Place
Travell Thomas - 6th Place

After Bob De Wolfe limped from the hijack, a short-stacked Travell Thomas moved all in for 194,000 from the cutoff. Louis Aquilina called from the button, the blinds folded, and De Wolfe got out of the way.

Aquilina: {k-Spades}{q-Spades}
Thomas: {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

Thomas seemed shocked that his opponent called him with the hand that he did, but there was nothing that could be done about it now. Needless to say, the {10-Spades}{8-Spades}{k-Hearts} flop didn't sit too well with Thomas as Aquilina paired his king to take the lead, not to mention his flush draw.

Thomas, who finished eighth in this very event last year, was up out of his seat and didn't even notice the {10-Hearts} turn gave him back the lead with trips. Before he could, the {7-Spades} spiked on the river to give Aquilina the flush. Thomas was lamenting the defeat when he noticed the second ten.

"I didn't even see it," he said. "I knew my demise would be to some shit like that."

Bob De Wolfe Eliminated in 5th Place ($11,125)

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Bob De Wolf

Action exploded on a {q-Spades}{9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} flop between Bob De Wolfe and Andre Smith that resulted in the former player getting his sizable stack in the middle.

De Wolfe: {q-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Smith: {9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}

De Wolfe had flopped two pair, but it was no good as Smith hit trips. Neither the {5-Spades} turn nor {A-Hearts} river had any bearing on the hand, and De Wolfe had to settle for fifth place and $11,125.

"You were quite the character," someone at the table said. Indeed he was.

Louis Aquilina Eliminated in 4th Place ($15,011)

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 3,000 ante
Louis Aquilina - 4th Place
Louis Aquilina - 4th Place

Nicholas Walker opened for 60,000 under the gun and then called when Louis Aquilina three-bet to 130,000 from the button. Walker then checked the {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} flop and snap-called when Aquilina moved all in for 669,000.

Aquilina: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Walker: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}

Both players had paired their ace, but it was Walker's kicker that made him the huge favorite. The {J-Diamonds} turn swapped their spots, meaning Aquilina needed a king to make a straight and stay alive. The {2-Hearts} river wasn't what he was looking for and he had to settle for fourth place and $15,011.

Andre Smith - 3rd Place
Andre Smith - 3rd Place

In the first hand after striking the deal, Kyle Gay opened for 60,000 and Andre Smith moved all in without looking at his cards. Nicholas Walker called from the big blind and Gay got out of the way.

Smith: {k-Hearts}{5-Clubs}
Walker: {a-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}

"You'll probably win," Walker laughed. Smith seemed content to have locked up the money that he did, and the trophy apparently didn't have much appeal. That said, he wasn't too upset when the board ran out {10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} and he was sent out the door in third place.

Congrats to Nicholas Walker, Winner of the WNY Poker Challenge Main Event ($37,061)

On Sunday, the 2014 Western New York Poker Challenge $1,100 Main Event, a tournament that attracted 183 entries and created a prize pool of $176,595, came to an end when Nicholas Walker defeated Kyle Gay in heads-up play to capture the $37,061 first-place prize.

Day 2 of the Main Event returned with 34 players, and 13 of them had to go before the money was reached. Among those to leave empty handed were Robert Bourkey, Todd Saffron, Jim Goertz, Dave Grana, Kyle Gauchat, Blake Napierala, and Tracy Rouse.

Rouse actually fell as the bubble girl. It happened in Level 17 (3,000/6,000/500) when Rouse, who had grown extremely short, decided to move in her last 18,500 under the gun. Joe Cruz called from middle position, and Nicholas Walker came along from the small blind. Both active players then checked it down as the board ran out {8-Hearts}{6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{j-Clubs}.

Rouse shook her head and showed the {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs} for not much of anything, and Cruz rolled over the {5-Clubs}{5-Spades}. Walker mucked, which meant Cruz eliminated a disappointed Rouse as the bubble girl. Her elimination secured the remaining 21 players a guaranteed payday of at least $2,119.

On the way to the final table, 11 more players fell by the wayside including 2014 Western New York Poker Challenge Event #1 winner, Kevin Mathias (21st - $2,119); defending champ Matthew Sande (20th - $2,119); and Joseph Elia (18th - $2,296), who won Event #2 $500 No-Limit Hold’em earlier in the series.

The first casualty at the final table ended up being Mike Shavensky, who fell in Level 21 (8,000/16,000/2,000) when Andre Smith opened the action for 35,000 and received a call from Bob De Wolfe. Shavensky then moved all in for right around 170,000, and Gay moved all in over the top from the big blind. Both Smith and De Wolfe folded, and Shavensky sensed that he was in trouble.

Shavensky: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}
Gay: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}

Shavensky fell in tenth place while Gay, who was the short stack at the start of the final table, vaulted to over 600K.

From there the eliminations continued and included Joe Cruz (9th - $4,062), Johannes Mueller (8th - $5,121), Pete Kaemmerlen (7th - $6,534), Travell Thomas (6th - $8,653), De Wolfe (5th - $11,125), and Louis Aquilina (4th - $15,011). When three-handed play began, Gay was on the extreme short stack, but thanks to three doubles he found himself right back in contention. That is when the final three struck a deal.

Once the numbers were finalized, Smith moved all in blind and was promptly ousted in third place. Gay and Walker engaged in a short heads-up battle, but eventually the chip advantage of the former proved too much to overcome.
