Tyler Bags Biggest Stack as 49 Advance from Day 1b

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Ryan Tyler
Ryan Tyler

Another trip to its "home base" of Canterbury Park has resulted in another big turnout for the Mid-States Poker Tour. After 241 Day 1b runners, the two-flight total was pushed to 430. Ryan Tyler emerged as the top stack from Day 1b, and he also claimed the title of overall chip leader heading into Day 2, bagging 285,500.

When Day 1b came to a close, 49 players remained.

Tyler built up a monstrous stack of 240,000 by Level 12 (800/1,600/200). His heater continued with a big win during the final level of the night, when three players saw the {8-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{5-Spades} flop for a raise. An early-position player bet 7,500 after Tyler checked, the third player in the pot folded, and then Tyler put the bettor all in for about 40,000. The player wasted little time calling with the {5-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for bottom two pair, but Tyler had that smashed with the {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds} for top set. From there, Tyler's set held up despite the {3-Hearts} turn for a surprise sweat.

Notable local player Adam Dahlin finished a distant second with 226,500.

Dahlin owes his hefty stack in large part to a big preflop all-in clash during Level 13 (1,000/2,000/300). There, he opened to 4,300 early and got one call before Mike Schneider made it 11,100 on the button. Vlad Revniaga cold four-bet to 31,200 out of the small blind, and Dahlin moved all in for 68,200. The caller quickly mucked, and Schneider followed suit after getting a rough count. Revniaga made the reluctant call with the {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}, and Dahlin showed him two kings. Revniaga picked up a straight draw on the turn as the board ran out {10-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}, but the {q-Clubs} river was safe for Dahlin.

A number of other notables advanced, including DJ Buckley (210,000), Josh Reichard (151,500), Ryan Hartmann (149,000), the aforementioned Schneider (137,000), Ken Pates (130,000), MSPT team pro Nick Pupillo (126,500), Big One for One Drop participant John Morgan (125,000), Lance Harris (101,000), Kou Vang (66,000), and Aaron Johnson (51,000).

Players failing to make the cut after 14 levels included Mike Ross, Mike Lang, John Hayes, Jake Balsiger, Rodger Johnson, defending champ Peixin Liu, Nick Jivkov, MSPT points leader Mark Hodge, and Jeremy Dresch.

Play resumes at 10:30 a.m. local time on Sunday, at which point the tournament will play down to a winner who will claim more than $106,000 in prize money. Be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews for continued live coverage from Canterbury Park.

Dahlin Doubles Through Revniaga

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Adam Dahlin
Adam Dahlin

Adam Dahlin opened for 4,300 and saw an explosion of action. A middle player called, Mike Schneider raised to 11,100 on the button, and Vlad Revniaga cold four-bet to 31,200 in the small blind. That didn't deter Dahlin, who shoved all in for 68,200. The caller and Schneider folded, and Revniaga called after getting the count.

Revniaga: {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}
Dahlin: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}

Dahlin was looking good on the {10-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{9-Hearts} flop, but a {q-Diamonds} turn gave him a bit more of a sweat as Revniaga picked up a straight draw. The {q-Clubs} was a near miss.

Fussy Eliminates Lesniak

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Leo Fussy
Leo Fussy

In a pot where Leo Fussy limped in and called a raise from Derek Lesniak, the board read {5-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{7-Clubs} on the turn. Lesniak bet about 10,000, and Fussy said he was all in, putting Lesniak at risk for about 7,000 more. Lesniak called.

Fussy: {q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Lesniak: {a-}{a-}.

The board paired on the river, but it was a {7-Spades}, filling Fussy up.

The players are on a 10-minute break.

Morgan Busted; Seitz Doubles

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
John Morgan
John Morgan

John Morgan lost the last 6,000 in his stack with {a-}{10-} gainst a player with {a-}{k-} and head to reenter.

At another table, Jason Seitz came out with about 10,000 over an opponent's bet of 2,100, leaving himself with just a few thousand behind on the {6-Spades}{6-Clubs}{5-Spades} flop. Seitz's opponent called after a lengthy tank, and Seitz pushed in his last 3,550 on the {j-Diamonds} turn. His opponent called, and Seitz showed he was on the draw with {a-Spades}{q-Spades}. His opponent had {8-Spades}{8-Hearts} and was fading spades, aces and queens. The {3-Spades} was just the ticket for Seitz, filling his flush.

Almost hidden in the corner of the room, Jake Balsiger occupies Seat 8 at Table 2. Balsiger gained poker fame with a deep run in the 2012 Main Event, where he ultimately finished third behind Greg Merson and Jesse Sylvia. Balsiger scored some scattered four and five-figure cashes since that $3.8 million score before choosing another one of the world's biggest tournaments to make his presence felt again: the 2014 Aussie Millions. There, he once again finished third, this time for about $568,000.

He'll try to add a Mid-States Poker Tour win to his successes, here at Canterbury.

Welcome to Day 1b of Mid-States Poker Tour Canterbury Park

MSPT Canterbury Park
MSPT Canterbury Park

With one flight in the books at Mid-States Poker Tour Canterbury Park, it's time for Day 1b. The first flight drew a hefty 189 entrants, and it wouldn't be a surprise if this one topped 200 runners.

We won't be seeing a few notable players, such as Matt Kirby, Thao Thiem, James Maxey, David Gutfreund, Todd Breyfogle, Judd Greenagel, and Gennady Shimelfarb, as they all bagged on Day 1a up and get the day off today.

The plan for Day 1b is to play out 14 levels, with cards in the air at 4 p.m. as the last satellite winds down and the final few qualifiers trickle to the registration desk. The Allen Kessler-approved structure will be in place with 40-minute levels, 20,000 starting stacks, and breaks every three levels. Everyone will be allowed one reentry in case of an elimination before the end of Level 9, when registration closes.
