Robb Ends Day 1b With Monster Lead

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Jay Robb
Jay Robb

Day 1b of the Mid-States Poker Tour Golden Gates in Black Hawk, Colorado attracted 138 runners, and after 15 levels of play, Jay Robb bagged up a monster chip lead with 470,000. The total puts the Denver native more than 120,000 clear of Matt Bingel, who bagged 316,500 to top Day 1a. Robb has experienced success at the venue before, having headed a six-way chop at the main event of Colorado Poker Championship 7 for $28,174. A win here figures to net him far more.

In total, 28 players advanced, making it an even 50 after two Day 1 flights. Others making it through included Jason Burruss (374,000), Jon Cohen (260,000), Eric Maier (231,000), Bryan Devonshire (205,000), Travis Northrope (159,500), Will Givens (140,000), Mark Hodge (138,500), and Bruce Carter (98,500).

Devonshire, a well-known pro who has north of $3 million in combined live and online tournament cashes, punctuated his night with a huge bluff just before the buzzer sounded. In the final level of the night (1,500/3,000/500), he bet 8,500 from the button after Carter checked to him out of the big blind on a flop of {a-Spades}{7-Spades}{9-Hearts}. Carter came alive with a raise to 20,000, Devonshire decided to see the turn, and the {j-Hearts} arrived. Carter bet 20,000 again, and Devonshire asked to see his stack. Carter moved his arms then returned them.

"Can I see your stack again please?" Devonshire asked. It looked to be around 120,000, and Devonshire shoved for slightly less, 112,400.

"I told myself I was going to call if you did that," Carter said with a sigh after about a four-minute tank. "So gross."

"Will you show me if I lay it down?" Carter said after another minute or so. Devonshire remained motionless.

Carter did decide on a fold, mucking {a-}{k-} face-up, and Devonshire turned over {k-}{9-} before dragging the pot.

Hodge, meanwhile, seeks to add to his already-sizable lead in the MSPT Player of the Year race. He's already scored two final tables plus a third cash this season, though he's yet to taste victory, with fourth being his best result. A late double with {k-Spades}{k-Clubs} against a player holding {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} propelled him to a solid finish, with Hodge making an unbeatable full house on the turn.

Defending champ Reza Yazdi, last time's third-place finisher Max Chrisp, Jason Vanstrom, James Wilson, Nader Wahdan, Kris Wagner, Phanora Prom, and Brian Hartner were among those falling during the course of play. Yazdi looked to be on his way to a great day after amassing a huge stack early, but he opened for 4,000 under the gun during Level 12 (600/1,200/200) and then called the shove of Mike Harris, who put him at risk for about 100,000. Yazdi's jacks were crushed by two kings, and he busted out, hopping in the qualifier shortly after.

The players who make it through that qualifier will be playing Day 1c at noon on Saturday, and PokerNews will be on hand for live updates of the final Day 1.

Devonshire Shows a Big Bluff

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Bryan Devonshire
Bryan Devonshire

Bryan Devonshire bet 8,500 from the button on an {a-Spades}{7-Spades}{9-Hearts} flop against big blind Bruce Carter, who responded with a raise to 20,000. Devonshire called, and the {j-Hearts} hit the turn.

Carter mucked {a-}{k-} face-up.

"Want to see it?" Devonshire said, holding his cards above the muck. Carter confirmed he did, and Devonshire flipped {k-}{9-}.

Yazdi Calls it Off

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Reza Yazdi
Reza Yazdi

Reza Yazdi opened to 4,000 under the gun, and Mike Harris shoved all in from the small blind to put Yazdi at risk for about 100,000 total. That's where we found the defending champ, contemplating calling it off for a couple of minutes. Finally, he grabbed a stack of chips and forcefully placed them in the middle, spinning {j-Spades}{j-Clubs} face-up behind them. Harris had him crushed with {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}, though, and a {10-Hearts}{a-Spades}{5-Spades} brought little for Yazdi. The {6-Spades} turn brought the sweat with a four-flush for Yazdi, but a red {q-Diamonds} arrived to finish him.

Chrisp Calls on the Come

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Max Chrisp
Max Chrisp

Max Chrisp opened to 2,600 on the button and got a call from the small blind before the big blind made it 6,500 to go. Chrisp came along, as did the small blind. The small blind checked the {9-Clubs}{10-Spades}{k-Spades} flop, and the big blind bet 12,000. Chrisp called, and the small blind folded. The big blind jammed for roughly 26,000 on the {5-Clubs} turn, and Chrisp called, slapping down {a-Spades}{j-Spades}. He was well behind the {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} of the big blind, but the {4-Spades} river gave him the flush he needed.

Hodge Hits His Out

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Mark Hodge
Mark Hodge

Will Givens raised it up to 2,000 under the gun and got a call from Mark Hodge. The next player made it 6,000 to go, and all three saw the {5-Spades}{q-Clubs}{2-Clubs} flop. Action checked to the preflop leader, who bet 12,000. Givens mucked, but Hodge grabbed his whole stack and pushed it forward, just over 20,000. The other player called.

Hodge: {a-Clubs}{4-Clubs}
Opponent: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}

Hodge needed a club or a three, but the {5-Spades} didn't help on the turn. The {3-Spades} did though, giving him a wheel.

Runner-Runner for Wilson

Level 7 : 250/500, 50 ante
James Wilson
James Wilson

Two players checked to a middle-position player on a {3-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} flop, and he fired 3,000. Only James Wilson, the small blind, called. Wilson check-called another 4,000 on the {k-Spades} turn, and the {q-Hearts} river put a four-straight on board. Wilson tossed his last 15,300 in.

"Ugh," Wilson's opponent groaned, sitting up in his chair. After a couple of minutes, he splashed in calling chips and was shown {a-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} for Broadway, having been outdrawn on the river after turning a straight with {q-Spades}{9-Spades}.

Givens, Wahdan Reload the Clips

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Nader Wahdan
Nader Wahdan

Three players put in 1,350 preflop, and the small blind, who had the preflop lead, bet 5,000 on the {6-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{7-Clubs} flop. Nader Wahdan jammed his last 6,800, and a third player folded. The small blind called the small shove with {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}, and Wahdan had {q-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for top pair and a flush draw.

"I had hearts," a player said.

"I had a seven," another chimed in.

Wahdan's situation looked less rosy with some outs dead, and sure enough, two bricks fell to eliminate him. He headed to registration to fire bullet number three.

Will Givens also went bust in a hand we didn't see, and he's now seated again with a fresh stack.

Yazdi Punts a Pair of Opponents

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Reza Yazdi
Reza Yazdi

Action exploded on a {7-Hearts}{9-Spades}{7-Clubs} flop between three players as the hijack bet 6,000 after a trio of checks, the big blind called, another player folded, and defending champion Reza Yazdi made it 13,000. The bettor shoved all in for about 23,000, the big blind called off for 19,000, and Yazdi snapped in there, covering everyone.

Yazdi: {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Hijack: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Big blind: {10-Clubs}{7-Spades}

The player in the hijack asked for a king and missed as Yazdi's boat held through the {5-Clubs} turn and {j-Diamonds} river. He then berated the player in the hijack, saying he made a mistake that cause Yazdi to come along preflop and outflop him. The defending champ is off to an excellent start.

Elsewhere, Kris Wagner is down to 5,700 after value betting top pair on the river in a three-way pot and then folding to a check-shove.

Players are on break for 10 minutes.

Wagner Tries to Bluff Chrisp

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Max Chrisp
Max Chrisp

Max Chrisp bet 1,300 from the hijack on a {5-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} flop, and Kris Wagner made it 3,300 from the button. Chrisp called, then check-called 4,200 more on the {8-Hearts} turn. The {k-Spades} arrived on fifth street, and Chrisp checked again, quickly calling 10,100.

"Just threes," Wagner said, showing {3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}.

"Thank God," Chrisp said, turning over {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}.

Both players made deep runs here last year, with Wagner finishing fourth in the first event here and Chrisp third the second time the tour rolled through.
