Smith Books Lead on Day 1b; Two-Time Winner Zarlenga Bags Big

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Kenny Smith
Kenny Smith

Day 1b of Mid-States Poker Tour Tropicana Evansville wrapped up with 30 players surviving the 14 levels of play. The second of two flights drew 141 runners, enough to inch past the $250,000 guarantee when combined with the 110 Day 1a players. Kenny Smith finished with the chip lead, bagging 226,000, just ahead of Neil Patel's 216,500.

Smith surged ahead with a late rush in the final few levels. He busted 2013 MSPT Player of the Year Patrick Steele in Level 14 (1,200/2,400/400) just after Steele doubled up to around 55,000. According to Steele, Smith opened from early position and Steele three-bet with {a-}{a-} from the blinds. Smith four-bet and they got it in with Steele at risk, and Smith turned {10-}{10-} into a straight for the win.

Also of note, MSPT Team Pro and two-time champ Jason Zarlenga made it through the day with a nice stack of 147,500. Zarlenga has cashed for more than $260,000 on the tour. He overcame some early struggles tangling with Jonathan Dimatteo, who caused Zarlenga fits with an aggressive early bluff or two.

Zarlenga turned the tables in Level 9 (400/800/100) when Dimatteo bet 5,500 in middle position after five players saw a {q-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} flop. One player called in late position, but Zarlenga check-raised to 16,200. Dimatteo called, and he called Zarlenga's last 9,000 on the {7-Hearts} turn with the {j-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. He trailed Zarlenga's {j-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}, and the two pair held on the {3-Diamonds} river. Dimatteo didn't recover and busted shortly thereafter.

Zarlenga is looking to become the first ever three-time MSPT champ.

Other player advancing included Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler (129,500), former European Poker Tour champ Tim Vance (103,500), and Adam Lamphere (72,000).

Among the players joining Dimatteo and Steele on the rail: Mark Hodge, Aaron Wallace, Matt Alexander, Steve Anderson, Adam Friedman, Michael Hahn, and last year's winner here, Charlie Dawson. Dawson ran into a set-over-set spot to bust his final bullet.

The 49 players who survived the Day 1 flights combine at 10:30 a.m. local time to play to a winner. Stay tuned to PokerNews to find out who that will be.

Kings the Ticket Again for Fellers

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Anthony Fellers
Anthony Fellers

We found Anthony Fellers with {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} in front of him on a board of {q-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{q-Spades}{3-Hearts}{k-Spades}. His unfortunate opponent was getting his stack counted down with {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts} on the felt face-up, and he couldn't match Fellers' 67,400. According to a player at the table, Fellers had opened in the cutoff and received action from the small blind, who led out on the flop. Fellers shoved all in and the small blind called, only to see the nightmare king appear on the river.

Charlie Dawson
Charlie Dawson

There will be a new champion of Mid-States Poker Tour Tropicana Evansville after Charlie Dawson busted his last bullet.

We found Dawson considering a 6,000 bet from David Dang on a board of {9-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}. Dawson said he was all in, and Dang snapped for about 17,000.

"You have an ace?" Dawson said.

Dang said he did not and showed {9-Hearts}{9-Spades} for a set.

"Oh s***, set over set," Dawson said, turning over {4-Hearts}{4-Spades}. "That's a hell of a way to go out. Nice hand."

The river was a {6-Diamonds} and Dawson made his exit.

Jonathan Dimatteo
Jonathan Dimatteo

During the previous level, Jason Zarlenga opened to 675 in middle position, and Jonathan Dimatteo raised to 1,800 on the button. Zarlenga called, bringing an {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}{7-Spades} flop. Zarlenga check-called 2,200, and he checked the {4-Hearts}. Dimatteo bet 4,500 this time, and Zarlenga called after a lengthy tank. The {a-Spades} river prompted a third check from Zarlenga, and Dimatteo instantly moved all in.

"Two kings no good?" Zarlenga asked after some time. Eventually, he folded.

Dimatteo showed {q-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} and Zarlenga rapped the table.

On the {j-Hearts} turn, he shoved all in for more than 20,000, and the player under the gun called off for about that amount. The third player folded.

May: {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}
Under the gun: {5-}{5-}

May was against a boat but he filled up himself on the {a-Spades} river to take the pot.

Welcome to Day 1b of Mid-States Poker Tour Tropicana Evansville

Mark Hodge
Mark Hodge

The Mid-States Poker Tour's second trip to Tropicana Evansville has seen one flight in the books, so there's one more to go: Day 1b is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. local time here on the Ohio River.

Day 1a saw 110 runners take their chances and just 19 advance to Sunday's Day 2, led by Craig Spalding, who ran it up to 283,000. Other notable survivors included MSPT Team Pro Nick Pupillo, two-time circuit ring winner Josh Turner, and last year's runner-up here, Alex Yen.

Some of the players who failed to advance, and players we'll likely see fire again on Day 1b: Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler, Jonathan Dimatteo, Jason Zarlenga, Matt Alexander, Mark Hodge, Adam Friedman, Adam Lamphere, and Steve Anderson. Hodge has another golden opportunity to gain Player of the Year ground on Blake Bohn, who is skipping this event.

Once again, players will get 20,000 in starting stacks and start with blinds of 50/100. Levels go up every 40 minutes, and each player gets one reentry. The reentries will be cut off at the beginning of Level 10, with breaks between every three levels. At the conclusion of 14 levels, players will bag and the Day 2 field will be set.
