Welcome To Day 1b of the 2020 MSPT Venetian $1,100 Main Event

Venetian Poker Room
Venetian Poker Room

Saturday marks the second of two starting flights in the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Venetian $1,100 Main Event.

Day 1b looks to build on the momentum from Friday's Day 1a, which drew 485 entries and surpassed the tournament's guaranteed prize pool of $200,000 in the first level of play. Given an increased table capacity on the weekend, an even higher number is expected show and look to add their name to the list of 63 players that have already advanced to Sunday's Day 2.

Cards are scheduled to fly at 11:10 a.m. local time with masks required for everybody who joins. All players receive starting stacks of 25,000 and blinds will start at 100/100, increasing every 40 minutes throughout the tournament. There will be 15-minute breaks at the end of every three levels and a 45-minute dinner break at the end of Level 9 (approximately 6:25 p.m.).

All players may enter or re-enter as many times as they wish until the end of the dinner break, which will mark the last chance to compete for what could end up being a total prize pool of more than $1 million. At that time, tournament registration will officially end and prize pool information will be released. From there, play will continue until the end of Level 15 unless 11% of the field is reached before that time.

Of the 63 who advanced on Day 1a, Alan Findlay (612,500) is the one to catch. Findlay was well clear of his next-closest finisher in Benjamin Craig (425,000), bagging a stack that may or may not be contested in the final starting flight. Other MSPT mainstays like Nick Pupillo, Steve Wilkie, and Ralph Massey were among those to find themselves dry on chips before the end of the night and are expected to be back in on the action from the get-go.

Once again, PokerNews will be providing coverage from beginning to end, so make sure to follow along.

Szczur Flops Top Two For An Early Double

Level 1 : 100/100, 0 ante
Joshua Szczur
Joshua Szczur

A four-way single-raised pot brought a flop of {6-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} and Stephen Shanks continuation-bet 700 after the small blind checked to him. The cutoff folded to put action onto Joshua Szczur, who was on the button and raised to 2,300.

The small blind called and then Shanks three-bet to 8,700. Szczur quickly four-bet shoved for 17,800, folding out the small blind before Shanks dropped in a stack to call.

Joshua Szczur: {j-Spades}{9-Spades}
Stephan Shanks: {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}

Szczur was firmly ahead and faded any potential danger as the turn {5-Clubs} and river {4-Spades} completed the runout to earn him the double.

Level 3 : 100/300, 0 ante
Sean Yu
Sean Yu

Sean Yu opened the action with a raise to 700 on the button and the small blind three-bet to 2,000. Yu called and the two saw a flop of {9-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}. The small blind made a continuation-bet of 1,500 and Yu called.

The small blind continued with a second barrel of 3,300 on the turn {7-Spades} and Yu called again, bringing the river {7-Clubs} to display trips on board. The small blind quickly checked over to Yu, who put in a bet of 7,500.

The small blind thought for about 35 seconds and then acknowledged a nice hand as he sent his cards to the muck. Yu turned over {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}, showing sevens full of aces as the dealer sent the pot his way.

"I Was Hoping For A Flip"

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
David Larson
David Larson

David Larson had 16,000 in front of him under the gun and was facing a reraise all in for his effective stack of 38,000 from an opponent in the cutoff. He had been in the tank for some time, requesting a clock after not much longer. The dealer complied, but Larson found a call before the floor could arrive. The cutoff quickly tabled his hand, showing {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}.

"I was hoping for a flip," responded Larson as he tabled {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds} in turn. Larson remained in front as the board ran out {j-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{9-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} and earned the double as a result.

Jackson Sends One To the Showers

Level 6 : 300/500, 500 ante
David Jackson
David Jackson

A player raised to 1,000 under the gun and received two calls, one of which was from David Jackson in the hijack. The flop came {a-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{8-Spades} and the under-the-gun player made a continuation-bet of 3,000. Jackson raised after the player in between folded, making it 9,000, and the under-the-gun player three-bet jammed for around 20,000. Jackson called.

All-In Player: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
David Jackson: {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}

The pair and flush draw saw the turn {6-Diamonds} add an open-ended straight draw to Jackson's total number of outs, which ultimately proved to be too much for the all-in player to fade as the river {4-Spades} gave Jackson the straight and earned him both the pot and knockout.

Thomas McDaniel
Thomas McDaniel

A player limped in under the gun and the player on his right raised to 2,000. Three more players called in middle position, the hijack, and on the button, respectively, and then Thomas McDaniel three-bet all in for 13,100.

The original raiser shoved over the top and the middle-position player called all in for less, around 28,000. Two folds followed and all three remaining players' hands were tabled.

Thomas McDaniel: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Early Position: {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Middle Position: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}

A full house came on the runout {7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{7-Hearts}, resulting in McDaniel earning the triple while the other two players took back their remaining stacks.

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

Mike Foley

There was around 8,000 in the middle from preflop action on a board of {3-Spades}{3-Hearts}{9-Hearts}. Three players were in the hand, with the big blind checking to Mike Foley, who bet 2,500 under the gun. The cutoff raised to 8,500 and the big blind check-jammed over the top for 18,000. Foley four-bet shoved and the cutoff folded.

Big Blind: {9-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Mike Foley: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}

The big blind saw the news and the turn and river rolled off {6-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}. He tapped the felt, gathered his things, and made his way from the tournament area as the pot was shipped to Foley.

"I've Been Punting To You the Whole Time"

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Kenny Nguyen
Kenny Nguyen

Michael Hinde was in middle position and called an under-the-gun raise to 2,600. From there, action folded around to Kenny Nguyen, who defended his big blind and the three saw a flop of {j-Spades}{k-Clubs}{9-Hearts}. Action checked to Hinde, who reached for chips.

"Easy!" said Nguyen. Hinde bet 6,300 and only Nguyen called. The turn came {3-Diamonds} and Nguyen checked again. Hinde continued, firing another 14,000 forward. Nguyen studied Hinde a bit and then put out matching chips to call.

The river fell {10-Clubs} and Nguyen said he mentioned that he was going to be the one to take the lead and bet. He put out 8,000 and Hinde thought for a few minutes before raising to 20,000. Nguyen called.

Hinde showed {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for complete air and Nguyen turned over {q-Hearts}{10-Spades}. His flopped nuts (and eventual second nuts) was more than enough to draw some reaction from both players.

"I've been punting to you the whole time!" Hinde said as both players laughed and regained focus for the next hand.

Marquez Davis

Marquez Davis had opened in the hijack and saw the small blind re-jam. The big blind came over the top, also shoving, and Davis called both players.

Small Blind: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}
Big Blind: {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Marquez Davis: {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}

A flop of {3-Clubs}{3-Spades}{3-Hearts} gave Davis another card to sweat but the turn {2-Clubs} and river {4-Hearts} complied and he scored the double knockout, bringing his stack over 200,000.
