A buy in of $1,110 will give each player a starting stack of 25,000. Levels are 40 minutes long with a 10-minute break every three levels. This is a re-entry tournament, so entries are unlimited for the re-entry period, which will be all the way up until the start of Level 13.

Johnson Up to Winning Ways Early

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Aaron Johnson
Aaron Johnson

Action was picked up with a pot of 9,000 in the middle on the turn with the board reading {4-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{a-Spades}{q-Spades}. MSPT legend Aaron Johnson was in the small blind and led out with an overbet of 10,000. Phillip Giola raised all in from middle position, Johnson snap-called and turned over the {9-Spades}{8-Spades} flush.

Gioia rolled over his {q-Hearts}{4-Hearts} two-pair, needing a four or queen on the river to make a full house. But the river came the {a-Diamonds} and Gioia was busted.

"Up to your old tricks again huh?" said a tablemate as Johnson gathered in the nice haul to his stack.

Murphy Shoves River and Shows Bluff

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
TJ Murphy

Action was picked up on the river as the board read {2-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{k-Clubs}. There was a massive pot of about 90,000 in the middle. TJ Murphy was in middle position and jammed all in to put his opponent to the test who had about 30,000 behind.

His opponent thought for several moments as it was likely one of the largest pots of the day thus far and eventually decided to fold.

Murphy said "Here's one for you PokerNews" and turned over the {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} for fourth pair, very likely not the best hand and he collected the big pot to send himself toward the top of the chip counts.

Shitama Dodges the World to Nearly Triple

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Zachary Shitama
Zachary Shitama

The flop read a wet looking {9-Hearts}{8-Spades}{7-Hearts}. Zachary Shitama jammed all in from the small blind, a player in the early position jammed his larger stack and the player on his direct left called after thinking for a while.

Shitama had the lead with the {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} set but was actually less than 50% to win the hand as he would need to dodge a lot of cards to survive as the player in early position had the {a-Hearts}{6-Hearts} nut flush and an open ender draw and the third player had the {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for an open ender of his own.

The turn was the {3-Clubs} and the river the {a-Clubs} to both come up blank for the draws and give Shitama the huge pot and send the third player out the door.

Gordon Finds Black Aces For Fifth Time and Commits Regicide

Level 12 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Colin Gordon Collecting the Pot
Colin Gordon Collecting the Pot

From the button, Jason Wojciechowski found himself in a predicament as he had three-bet to 11,000. The player in the big blind called and Colin Gordon made a huge all in shove from under the gun for 171,000.

Wojciechowski was deep in the tank and counted out how much of his stack the shove was for as he had a healthy stack himself. Eventually he pushed the counted out 171,000 forward and announced call, the big blind snap folded and suddenly there was a pot of over 350,000 in the middle.

It was exactly the news that Wojciechowski feared as his {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds} cowboys were up against the {a-Clubs}{a-Spades} black aces of Gordon.

Both players stood up as the flop came {8-Spades}{q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}. The turn was the {3-Spades} and the river came the {4-Hearts} to hold the aces and give Gordon the massive pot while wounding Wojciechowski severely.

"That's the fifth time I have gotten black aces today" said Gordon. "I was down to as low as 6,000 just twelve hands ago" he added as he now sits among the largest stacks in the room.

Late Night Treat For Moscati

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Vincent Moscati
Vincent Moscati

Vincent Moscati found himself in a dream scenario late in Day 1b as two of his opponents had shoved and he woke up with the {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}. His opponents had the {k-}{j-} and the {k-Spades}{q-Diamonds}.

The board would not provide any surprises as it ran out {9-Spades}{5-Spades}{6-Spades}{q-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} and Moscatti gathered the more than double up.

Michael Monetti Bags Chip Lead on Day 1b of MSPT Black Hawk Main Event

Level 15 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Michael Monetti
Michael Monetti

Day 1b of the MSPT Bally’s Black Hawk $1,110 Main Event attracted a field of 229 entries and ended with 27 remaining after just short of 10 hours of play.

Leading the way at the end of the night was Michael Monetti of Littleton, CO who bagged 464,000. Monetti has a second place finish in the MSPT Main Event in Black Hawk from 2017 and his Day 1 was a good start to try and go that deep again. He was spotted with a large stack late in the night and had a slight dip before surging back to the chip lead before the night ended.

Mike Meyer finished second with 413,000 and just behind him in third was Vincent Moscati who bagged 391,000 after a huge late night surge. The well-known tournament grinder caught pocket aces in the final few hands of the night after two players had shoved in front of him and his hand held to score a huge pot. He would then eliminate another player to end the night and move his stack close to the top.

John Compton (374,000) and Sergio Sanchez (356,000) closed out the top five stacks at bagging.

A few other notable players advanced among the surviving 27, including; Jared Ingles, Scott Stewart, Ricardo Eyzaguirre and one of the most successful MSPT players out there in Aaron Johnson.

Since only 12% of the field made the end of the night there were several who hit the rail. Notable busts who are likely to fire again on Day 1c include; Jessica Vierling, Sarah Stefan and Derek McMaster.

The 27 players who survived the day will join the ten survivors from Day 1a on Sunday for Day 2. There will be one more starting flight tomorrow, Day 1c which is expected to be the largest yet and PokerNews will have the coverage as it gets underway at noon local time.
