Welcome to Day 1a of the MSPT Black Hawk $1,110 Main Event ($200K GTD)

Steve Wilkie

The Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Black Hawk series begins its culmination on Thursday with Day 1a of the $1,110 Main Event ($200K GTD), the first of three starting days.

A week's worth of prelims have played to their conclusion, including a 998-entry $360 Regional that saw Juan Perez come out on top and earn himself $44,079 for his efforts. Others such as Cy Church, Vincent Moscati, Alex Kotliarsky, and Adrian Buckley also made it deep in the Regional, creating a hopeful momentum to ride into this weekend's Main Event.

Steve Wilkie also ran deep in last weekend's Regional event, taking 18th place ($2,934). More notably, however, is the fact that Wilkie enters the Main Event as reigning champion after topping a field of 399 to earn a career-best score of $85,149. A British native and Colorado resident, Wilkie was almost not going to be able to play this weekend due to his daughter's wedding, but international COVID restrictions have brought about a change in the wedding plans, thus enabling him to take a shot at defending his title.

The standard MSPT structure is in play, with 25,000 starting stacks and blinds beginning at 100/100/100. Levels will last 40 minutes all tournament long with 10-minute breaks at the end of every three levels, or two hours of play, and a 40-minute dinner break at the end of Level 9.

Late registration with one re-entry per flight is available for this event until the beginning of Level 13 (2,000/3,000/3,000), at approximately 9:10 p.m. local time. Fifteen levels are on the schedule for the day unless the field plays down to 12% of its total entries prior to that time, at which point a hard stop will be reached and will become the stopping point for all subsequent flights.

PokerNews will be bringing you updates from the time cards go in the air until chips have been sealed inside bags. Be sure to stick around.

Spahiu Stacks Carter

Level 2 : 100/200, 200 ante
Renato Spahiu

"I had you right where I wanted you," said Bruce Carter, leaning back in his seat in the big blind as his stack was being shipped across the table to the early-position Renato Spahiu. "Nice catch," Carter added.

The board read {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{k-Spades} with both players' hands still tabled: Carter's {q-Clubs}{j-Spades} had flopped Broadway with a redraw to a Royal Flush, but Spahiu's flopped top two pair made a full house on the river to improve to the best hand and win the pot and the knockout.

Griboski Check-Raises Ambaye

Level 3 : 200/300, 300 ante
Vincent Griboski
Vincent Griboski

Action was heads up as Vincent Griboski bet 1,000 on a flop of {8-Spades}{6-Hearts}{5-Hearts} from under the gun. Yohannes Ambaye raised to 2,200 in early position and Griboski called.

The turn came {5-Clubs} and Griboski checked. Ambaye bet 3,400 and Griboski put in a check-raise to 11,500.

Ambaye thought for over a minute, and then he slid his cards forward across the felt to the muck, earning Griboski the pot with his turn check-raise.

Defending MSPT Black Hawk champion Steve Wilkie was just seen walking through the tournament area to take his seat at Table 9. With his entry, the $1,110 Main Event has officially cracked 100 entries in Level 4 of Day 1a.

Moments later, last weekend's fifth-place finisher in the $360 Regional, Vincent Moscati was also seen at the registration desk alongside another familiar face to the poker world: Scott Stewart.

Smith Showers Two

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Neil Smith
Neil Smith

Neil Smith was in the hijack and called a raise to 2,000 from under the gun. Tan Hoang then three-bet jammed for around 20,000 on the button and the original raiser called, prompting Smith to pile in a covering stack and receive a call to bring about a three-way all-in preflop scenario.

Tan Hoang: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Under The Gun: {k-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}
Neil Smith: {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}

Hoang remarked about seeing Smith turn over the same hand as his, but quickly found a sweat on the flop {4-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{2-Clubs} as Smith picked up the nut flush draw. The turn {6-Clubs} completed that draw, giving Smith the nut flush and bringing about a fist pump from him as the river {3-Hearts} completed the runout and scored him the double knockout.

Big Slick Does the Trick for Kinzer

Level 7 : 400/800, 800 ante
Michael Kinzer
Michael Kinzer

Tim West open-limped under the gun and saw the cutoff limp behind before Michael Kinzer pumped it up to 11,000 on the button. The big blind re-jammed and action folded back to Kinzer, who asked for a count that was totaled to be 46,400. He then called.

All-In Player: {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades}
Michael Kinzer: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}

Kinzer's ace-king remained on top as the runout came {3-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} to score him the pot and the knockout.

"I win a lot of pots with ace high," said Kinzer with a smile afterwards to another player at the table, stacking his chips along the way.

Morrison Gets a Double; Gives a Double

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Jim Morrison
Jim Morrison

Hand #1: More than 65,000 was already in the middle with heads-up action between Jim Morrison in the cutoff and an opponent under the gun. The board read {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{7-Clubs} and the under-the-gun player had checked to Morrison, who shoved for 50,200. After some deliberation, a call was made.

Jim Morrison: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}
Opponent: {7-Spades}{6-Spades}

Morrison's aces were out in front but needed to fade the remaining spades and sevens in the deck. The river {j-Diamonds} fell cleanly in his favor and he scored a full double, with his opponent covering by about 10,000.

Hand #2: On the very next hand, Bruce Carter open-jammed for 22,300 in early position and Morrison called in the hijack. The big blind, who was Morrison's opponent from the previous hand, called all in as well.

Big Blind: {q-Clubs}{2-Spades}
Bruce Carter: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Jim Morrison: {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}

Each player took turns having the best hand through a runout of {j-Spades}{9-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{a-Spades}, with Carter's rivered pair of aces scoring both pots for a full double and then some.

Johnson Nearing a Quarter-Million

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Peter Johnson
Peter Johnson

Peter Johnson was just spotted with a stack close to 240K with less than 10 minutes remaining before the dinner break. He confirmed that he took a chunk of it by eliminating Frederick Rule, who got his ace-queen all in preflop and ran it into Johnson's pocket aces.

Johnson appears to have the largest stack in the room at the present moment, though a ton of poker is left to be played after dinner with six more levels on the docket at 40 minutes apiece.

Stewart Knocked Out By Kinzer

Level 10 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Scott Stewart
Scott Stewart

Scott Stewart opened to 3,500 in the hijack and saw the small blind re-jam for 21,000. Michael Kinzer was in the big blind and also went all in for 61,500, with Stewart calling all in for 10K less.

Small Blind: {a-Spades}{2-Diamonds}
Scott Stewart: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}
Michael Kinzer: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

Stewart remained ahead on the flop {7-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}, but the turn {a-Clubs} gave Kinzer the best hand and brought about a fist pump from him in celebration. The river {k-Clubs} changed nothing related to the outcome of the hand, with Kinzer ultimately improving to top two pair to send both players to the rail.
