Welcome to Day 2 of MSPT Riverside $1,100 Main Event

Jeff Grimes
Jeff Grimes

Two starting flights are in the books, and it's time to play for the big money at Mid-States Poker Tour Riverside $1,100 Main Event.

An unprecedented field of 862 has packed the poker room plus convention center over the past couple of days, but that's been trimmed to a manageable number of 112 after 30 total levels of action, 15 apiece on each starting day. A large majority of those 112 will be cashing, and payout information should be available near the start of the day, with the money bubble bursting in the first couple of hours.

Some Midwest stalwarts will be ready to roll when things kick off, including Jeff Grimes, Phil Mader, Nick Pupillo, Alex Ziskin, Byron Ziebell, and PokerNews' own Chad Holloway. Grimes has by far and away the biggest stack after bagging a staggering sum of 809,000, but poker tournaments tend to get wild, especially in the early stages of Day 2 of these MSPTs, so things could change in a hurry.

Day 2 play kicks off with 3,000/6,000/6,000 and will see 40-minute levels played until a champion has emerged. Keep an eye on PokerNews to see who that winner will be.

The 862 entrants created a prize pool of $836,140 at Mid-States Poker Tour Riverside $1,100 Main Event. That bounty will be divvied up among the top 90 finishers, so 22 unlucky players will walk away empty-handed here on Day 2.

The top prize will be $162,781, with everyone at the final table earning at least $11,685. A min-cash in 90th will be worth $2,170. Click the "Payouts" tab above for a full breakdown of the prize distribution.

Murphy Eliminates Ormson on the Bubble

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Larry Ormson
Larry Ormson

With {j-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{4-Spades}{9-Diamonds} on the felt, big blind TJ Murphy was all in for about 125,000. It looked like he barely covered Larry Ormson, who was under the gun. There was about 200,000 already in the middle.

Ormson slammed in some chips and flipped over {j-Hearts}{j-Spades} for top set but it was no good as Murphy showed {q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for a flush.

Berthelsen Outflops Stevermer

Level 22 : 15,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Dennis Stevermer
Dennis Stevermer

Dennis Stevermer opened early and got action from small blind Kevin Berthelsen. On the {5-Spades}{4-Hearts}{9-Clubs} flop, Stevermer bet 75,000, Berthelsen made it 160,000, and Stevermer jammed.

Berthelsen quickly called with {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds} for the nuts and Stevermer was in trouble with {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}.

The {j-Clubs} and {2-Spades} kept Berthelsen best and he had about 400,000 which covered Stevermer's remaining stack.

Jacks Comes Through for Mader

Level 24 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Phil Mader
Phil Mader

Phil Mader lost a big chunk of his stack earlier in a flip with ace-king against jacks, but this time, the jacks were lucky for him.

He shoved for 439,000 on the button over a cutoff jam by Carter Myers for slightly less, and big blind Renato Spahiu woke up with a quick call, showing {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}. Mader had {j-Spades}{j-Hearts} and Myers had {a-Diamonds}{9-Spades}.

The {9-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{j-Clubs} board sent Spahiu from winner to last place, and the {6-Diamonds} and {5-Hearts} were blanks on the turn and river.

Phil Mader Eliminated in 12th Place ($11,685); Kevin Berthelsen Eliminated in 13th Place ($10,016)

Level 27 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante
Phil Mader
Phil Mader

Nick Pupillo opened under the gun for 190,000 and Phil Mader jammed in the small blind for 680,000. Kevin Berthelsen thought a long time then called for around 430,000 in the big blind. Pupillo counted his stack then called.

Pupillo: {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Mader: {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}
Berthelsen: {k-Hearts}{j-Clubs}

Pupillo flopped the best of it when {q-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} hit and he held on the {8-Hearts} and {q-Clubs} to bust both Nebraskans.

Lester Crew Eliminated in 9th Place ($15,024)

Level 28 : 50,000/100,000, 20,000 ante
Lester Crew
Lester Crew

Daniel Sepiol opened early for 250,000 and Lester Crew made it 450,000 on his left. Sepiol shoved all in for Crew's stack of about 2 million. Crew tanked more than a minute then said he called.

Crew: {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Sepiol: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}

The board ran {5-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{a-Clubs}, so Sepiol hit an ace on the river to bust Crew, who cursed after the river card fell and then headed to payouts.

Andy Rogowski Eliminated in 8th Place ($19,197)

Level 29 : 60,000/120,000, 20,000 ante
Andy Rogowski
Andy Rogowski

Jovan Sudar opened in middle position and called when big blind Andy Rogowski shoved for about 1.8 million.

Sudar: {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Rogowski: {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

The {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} improved Sudar to the best hand but he still had cards to fade as Rogowski picked up a straight draw. The {3-Spades} and {3-Diamonds} were running bricks and Rogowski wished everyone good luck.

Austin Hohenadel Eliminated in 7th Place ($24,205)

Level 29 : 60,000/120,000, 20,000 ante
Austin Hohenadel
Austin Hohenadel

Austin Hohenadel shoved from under the gun for 270,000 and Kyna England made it 600,000 in the next seat. Jason Crews reshipped in the cutoff for 2,150,000. England tank-folded what she later claimed to be jacks.

Hohenadel: {10-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}
Crews: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

The {6-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{8-Spades} flop was grim news for Hohenadel and the {q-Clubs} turn ensured he wouldn't miracle a run-up from one big blind.

Nick Pupillo Eliminated in 6th Place ($31,716)

Level 29 : 60,000/120,000, 20,000 ante
Nick Pupillo
Nick Pupillo

Jovan Sudar opened for 275,000 second to act and Nick Pupillo counted down his stack on the button before shoving. It looked to be about 2.4 million. Sudar quickly called.

Sudar: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}
Pupillo: {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}

The {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} flop brought some backdoor possibilities for Pupillo but the {10-Clubs} and {q-Clubs} were of no use.

Pupillo had to settle for sixth place in seventh MSPT final table appearance, his fourth such finish on tour.
