Day 2 Begins with 98 Players in the Money!

Money Bricks
Money Bricks

After a full two starting flights have come to an end, there will be 98 players returning to the felt for Day 2 of the competition. Each one of them will be guaranteed a min-cash with just 12% of the field remaining in the $2,500 WinStar River Poker Series Main Event.

Joe Elpayaa will come into the day as the overall chipleader, amassing a whopping 768,000 chips after Day 1b. Elpayaa has had some impressive results at this tournament in the past and has accumulated over $1.5 million in tournament earnings over the course of his career. Life won't be easy for the American though, as many familiar faces still remain in the field and will be hunting down their place among the final 10.

Not far behind Elpayaa is another tournament grinder in Lou Garza, who stuffed 701,000 chips in his bag last night. Salvador Cervantes (633,000) will round out the top three heading into Day 2. Some other notables still in contention include Men "The Master" Nguyen (467,000), Wendy Freedman (341,000), Mike Wang (289,500), and Anthony Spinella (273,000).

The action will resume on level 17 with the blinds at 3,000/6,000 and a 1,000 ante. The blind levels will be increased to 60-minutes in length for the duration of the tournament. There will still be a 15-minute break after ever two levels and a 60-minute dinner break after the sixth level of the day.

A full list of payouts will be posted at the start of the day when the tournament staff makes it official. The schedule for today is to play down to the final table, at which point those players will bag up their chips. The final table will then resume on Tuesday and play down to a winner.

Continue to follow along with the PokerNews live reporting team as we bring you all of the live updates as the action unfolds.

Joon Cho was down to just 27,000 and he stuck in the last of it from middle position. Salvador Cervantes called from the hijack and Joe Elpayaa three-bet to 95,000 on the button. The blinds folded and Cervantes called to create a heads-up side pot.

The dealer fanned the flop of {j-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} and both players checked to the {10-Spades} on the turn. Two more checks and the {3-Clubs} landed on the river. Cervantes and Elpayaa decided to check it down and all hands were tabled. Cervantes showed {k-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} while Elpayaa had {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for two pair. Cho had nothing to put up a fight with {k-Spades}{5-Spades} and he was eliminated as Elpayaa dragged in both pots.

Garza Hates the Ruling But Wins

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Lou Garza
Lou Garza

On a board of {10-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{5-Diamonds}, the tournament supervisor was called over for a ruling. It seemed big blind Lou Garza had bet 50,000 and Paul Schwartz made it 100,000 on the button. Garza responded with an all-in shove and Schwartz had only put out 95,000. He flicked in another chip to complete his bet, and the dealer mistakenly announced a call, thinking that was a calling chip.

Thus, Garza tabled his hand of {9-Hearts}{5-Clubs}. The supervisor ruled action was finished and the river would be dealt. Garza vehemently disagreed with the ruling but a second supervisor was called, as Schwartz's {k-Hearts}{9-Clubs} was now face-up. The second TD agreed with the ruling. Garza pointed out his opponent should have to call the full amount of his stack to see the river, as he had announced all in and was now getting freerolled. The ruling stood, and luckily for Garza, the river was the {6-Clubs} so he won the pot anyway.

Kramer Copp Eliminates Spinella

Level 19 : 5,000/10,000, 2,000 ante
Anthony Spinella
Anthony Spinella

Kramer Copp had 30,000 in front of him in the cutoff and Anthony Spinella was in the tank from the small blind. He announced all in and Copp quickly called after the big blind folded.

Kramer Copp: {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}
Anthony Spinella: {a-Spades}{5-Spades}

Spinella's sweat was over quickly as {3-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{2-Clubs} flopped to give Copp the nuts. The {9-Spades} and {6-Spades} completed the board and Spinella had about 175,000 and was slightly covered so he headed for payouts.

Deas Eliminates Tran in Huge Flip

Johnny Deas
Johnny Deas

Three players limped into Hien Tran's small blind, and he made it 140,000. Johnny Deas, who led the cadre of limpers from middle position, shoved all in. Action folded back to Tran and he called it off for about 800,000.

Hien Tran: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Johnny Deas: {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

The flip went to Deas as the board ran out dead: {6-Clubs}{4-Spades}{9-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}. He pumped his fist and collected Tran's heathy stack.

Another Double for The Master

Men Nguyen
Men Nguyen

The action folded to Men Nguyen on the button who piled his last 175,000 into the middle. Brian Green looked down at his cards in the big blind and instantly made the call.

Men Nguyen: {a-Spades}{3-Clubs}
Brian Green: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

Green was in a dominating position and the flop of {10-Spades}{8-Spades}{5-Clubs} didn't change much. The {q-Spades} on the turn gave Nguyen a flush draw and the {j-Spades} on the river completed it for him.

"Yeah baby," Nguyen yelled as he jumped up from his seat.

Kramer Copp raised to 110,000 early, Men Nguyen called in the small blind and Mark Fisher called off for 45,000 in the big. Nguyen check-folded to a bet on the {5-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{q-Spades} flop and Copp revealed {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}. Fisher had an over with {k-Hearts}{7-Clubs} but the {a-Diamonds} turn and {6-Spades} river didn't do it for him.

With around 300,000 already in the middle and the flop reading {k-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}, Kramer Copp checked from early position. Mike Rogers announced all in for nearly 400,000 and Copp instantly called.

Kramer Copp: {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Mike Rogers: {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}

Rogers picked up some straight outs on the {7-Spades} turn card but the {2-Hearts} on the river bricked off. Rogers sent his chips to Copp and headed to the payout desk in 15th place.
