Shack-Harris' Two Pair Beats Zhu's Two Pair

Level 7 : 150/300, 25 ante

After Yaxi Zhu checked the {9-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop, Brandon Shack-Harris bet 500. Zhu made the call, and the turn was the {8-Diamonds}. Both players checked to see the {J-Hearts} fall on the river, and Zhu led with a bet of 1,350. Shack-Harris called.

Zhu tabled the {J-Spades}{3-Spades} for two pair, but Shack-Harris had a better two pair with the {J-Clubs}{9-Clubs}, and he won the pot.

Kamutzki Sent to the Rail

Level 7 : 150/300, 25 ante
George Danzer & Heinz Kamutzki
George Danzer & Heinz Kamutzki

The chips from George Danzer now belong to Mike Watson, who called the open shove for 10 big blinds with {A-Clubs} {Q-} and four-card flushed the pocket fours of the German. Danzer's countryman Heinz Kamutzki was equally fortunate after calling all in out of the big blind for 3,500 chips.

It was Michael Wang who shoved into him from the small blind with {J-Diamonds} {10-Clubs} and Kamutzki was ahead with {A-Hearts} {5-Hearts}. It was all fine until the {6-Hearts} {3-Clubs} {2-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} turn, but the {J-Spades} on the river gave Wang a pair.

Shack-Harris Versus Kurti

Level 7 : 150/300, 25 ante

In a battle of the small blind against a raise from under the gun, Brandon Shack-Harris led for 7,200 on the river of a {7-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{3-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{2-Spades} board. There were already 8,000 chips in the middle and Shack-Harris was risking almost exactly half his stack. His opponent, Gim Kurti, had him well covered. Kurti gave it a good minute before releasing his cards, and Shack-Harris won the pot.

"Use Them Wisely"

Level 7 : 150/300, 25 ante

A preflop raising war between Tino Lechich and Stephen Lindeblad resulted in the former getting his stack all in preflop and racing against the latter.

Lechich: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Lindeblad: {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}

Lechich was the player at risk, which meant he needed to improve if he wanted to keep his tournament hopes alive. The {5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{10-Hearts} flop kept Lindeblad firmly in the lead, an the {2-Diamonds} turn meant Lechich needed either an ace or king on the river to double. The dealer burned on last time and put out the {3-Clubs}.

"Use them wisely," Lechich told Lindeblad before exiting the tournament area.

Shack-Harris Takes another Hit

Level 8 : 200/400, 50 ante

Action folded to current WSOP Player of the Year leader Brandon Shack-Harris in the small blind and he limped. His opponent in the big blind opted to exercise her option with a min-raise to 600, which Shack-Harris called.

When the flop came down {q-Hearts}{j-Spades}{10-Clubs}, Shack-Harris checked and his opponent moved all in for 2,850. Shack-Harris called with the {j-Hearts}{9-Clubs} for middle pair and an open-ended straight draw, but it was no good as his opponent held the {q-Clubs}{9-Clubs} for a bigger pair and the same straight draw. The {3-Diamonds} turn was no help to Shack-Harris, and neither was the {4-Diamonds} river. With that, the big blind doubled and Shack-Harris dropped down to 6,100.

Chahine Up; Young Chops

Level 8 : 200/400, 50 ante

Rory Young had a short stack to his immediate left at risk for what looked like 5,000 chips but also revealed the weaker kicker in {A-Diamonds} {10-Spades}. The opponent was slightly ahead with {A-Clubs} {J-Spades} but was denied the double up, as the board ran out {9-Diamonds} {8-Spades} {9-Spades} {6-Spades} {6-Hearts} to chop it up.

In the meanwhile, Simon Chahine had another short stack at risk preflop with {J-Diamonds} {J-Spades} versus {A-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} and dodged all overcards on a board of {7-Hearts} {10-Clubs} {6-Clubs} {7-Diamonds} {2-Clubs}.

Gross and Hellmuth Head to the Showers

Level 8 : 200/400, 50 ante
Jeff Gross
Jeff Gross

We saw Jeff Gross standing on the rail texting on his phone. That's usually a sign of elimination, so we decided to check.

"So brutal," were the first words out of Gross' mouth. He then went on to explain that he shoved all in for his last 3,900 after Gim Kurti had limped. Kurti tanked for a bit and eventually made the call.

Kurti: {q-}{j-}
Gross: {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}

Gross was well out in front and primed to double. The {k-}{8-}{4-} flop didn't provide any immediate threats, but then the dealer burned and turned a {Q-}. Just like that Kurti went from a huge underdog to massive favorite. The river failed to help Gross, and his Event #1 came to an end not with a bang, but with a whimper.

Meanwhile, Phil Hellmuth, who had been clinging to a short stack, was eliminated in unknown action.
