Hawkins' Aces Hold

Level 4 : 100/200, 0 ante

We found an all in preflop situation with Brian Hawkins holding pocket aces and his opponent holding pocket kings. The board ran {8-Clubs} {9-Clubs} {10-Clubs} {8-Hearts} {4-Hearts} and Hawkins' aces held, putting back near the starting stack.

The Captain is Off to a Quick Start

Level 4 : 100/200, 0 ante

Four players created a pot of around 900 and saw a flop of {6-Clubs}{10-Spades}{A-Spades}. Both blinds checked to "Captain" Tom Franklin in middle position and he bet 300, which prompted the cutoff and small blind to fold. The big blind opted to make the call and then both players checked down the {J-Diamonds} turn and {5-Spades} river.

The big blind rolled over {8-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} for a missed straight, which was no good against Franklin's {A-Clubs}{2-Clubs}. It wasn't much of a hand, but a good excuse to let you know that Franklin is up to 47,000.

Harris Wins Second WSOP Circuit Ring in Event #3

While the PokerNews Live Reporting Team isn't on hand for the preliminary events, the WSOP's Nolan Dalla is, which is why we'll let him tell you about the winner of Event #3 $355 Pot-Limit Omaha in an excerpt from his recap:

John Harris continues to roll. Two months after his breakthrough victory at Harrah’s Rincon (San Diego) in March, the 32-year-old aspiring poker pro stormed into New Orleans and promptly won old ring number two. At this rate, Harris will run out of ring fingers within a couple of years.

Harris triumphed in a $355 buy-in Pot-Limit Omaha tournament, which was Event #3 on the New Orleans schedule. He collected $13,121 in prize money. But far more meaningful to Harris was a second gold ring and some added confidence going into the 2012 WSOP in Las Vegas.

Harris previously worked as a casino manager, before deciding to pursue his poker dreams. He relocated from Dallas to the California’s central valley, where he helped to manage a cardroom. But Harris was much more interested in playing the game than managing it, and decided to begin playing at a few WSOP Circuit stops earlier this season.

The latest champion enjoys some advantages, particularly in terms of his network of poker friends. Harris routinely travels to WSOP Circuit events with fellow multi-gold ring winners, including David Clark and La Sengphet (also from Dallas). His circle of friends also includes Josh Evans and Seneca Easley, who have won gold rings and are also playing here in New Orleans.

Harris now says he is ready to make the next big step, which could come at this year’s WSOP in Las Vegas.

Barnhart Bets to the River

Level 4 : 100/200, 0 ante
Sam Barnhart didn't see trip tens coming.
Sam Barnhart didn't see trip tens coming.

Sam Barnhart limped from under the gun, Chris Campbell raised to 525 from the cutoff, the button called, both blinds called and Barnhart completed the action with a call. The flop came {7-Diamonds} {K-Spades} {J-Clubs} and all five players checked. The turn came {10-Spades}, the blinds checked and Barnhart bet 700. Campbell called and the rest folded.

The river came {10-Clubs}, Barnhart bet 1,500 and Campbell elected to just call. Barnhart tabled pocket fives and Cambell tabled {Q-Spades} {10-Hearts} and took the pot with trip tens.

No One Gets Over this Moon

Level 4 : 100/200, 0 ante

A player in early position opened for 600 and cleared the field all the way around to Darvin Moon in the big blind. The 2009 World Series of Poker runner-up decided to defend and then checked called bets of 1,100 and 2,000 on the {5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{8-Hearts} flop and {6-Hearts} turn respectively.

When the {K-Hearts} appeared on the river, Moon turned right around and led out for 4,000. The EP player seemed none too pleased and sent his cards to the muck. With that, Moon is up to 32,000.

Dolan's Straight Flush Draw Gets No Where

Level 5 : 100/200, 25 ante
John Dolan's monster favorite resulted in a chop pot.
John Dolan's monster favorite resulted in a chop pot.

We found five players going to a flop of {7-Clubs} {4-Diamonds} {6-Diamonds}. 2010 November Niner John Dolan led out with 1,600, Daniel Biddle raised to 3,7000 and the three other players folded. Dolan called and the turn came {5-Spades}, which prompted him to bet 6,550. Biddle raised to 3,700, Dolan re-raised to 6,550 and Biddle four-bet to 13,000. Dolan wanted none of it and five-bet shoved and got a call.

Dolan: {7-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds}
Biddle: {J-Hearts} {J-Diamonds}

Dolan's two pair and straight flush draw looked to be a lock to win the hand until the river produced the {3-Hearts} putting a straight on the board. They chopped the pot and Biddle used one of his nine lives.

Conrad Holding Steady

Level 5 : 100/200, 25 ante

With about 1,400 in the pot and a flop of {A-Clubs}{4-Spades}{10-Clubs}, Chris Conrad checked from the hijack to his sole opponent in the cutoff. The latter bet 700, Conrad called, and then both players checked the {Q-Diamonds} turn and {9-Hearts} river.

"You got an ace?" Conrad asked, cueing his opponent to roll over {A-Hearts}{10-Spades} for two pair. Conrad didn't seem too surprised and tossed his hand to the muck, dropping to 19,500 in the process.

Pegasus is Back

Level 5 : 100/200, 25 ante

Not long ago, Mark "Pegasus" Smith was spotted taking a seat. We were perplexed as he was eliminated early in Level 1. We inquired with the tournament director and he informed us that each player is allowed one reentry, which they can use anytime they like prior to the start of Day 2, which includes the same flight.
