Day 1 Draws 578 Entries at First-Ever WSOP Circuit Foxwoods Main Event; Aryeh Cohen Leads

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

It was a long day at Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut as both Day 1a and 1b completed twelve 40-minute levels of play in the latest World Series of Poker Circuit Main Event. It marked the first time the WSOP Circuit had visited the colossal property, so it was no surprise that players turned out in full force.

A hefty 350 players tried their luck on Day 1a, which began at 11 a.m. ET, but only 123 of them would advance. Leading the pack with 143,100 was Eric Rando of East Providence, Rhode Island. We didn't catch Rando's big hand, but according to Andy Frankenberger, he got plenty of chips when his {K-}{Q-} overcame {A-}{K-} and {A-}{Q-} in a three-way all-in situation.

On Day 1b, which allowed for re-entries, 228 runners took to the felt, of which 73 advanced. Finishing with the chip lead from that flight, and the overall top spot, was Aryeh Cohen, who bagged up 180,000.

Another player who advanced from Day 1a, albeit with a less impressive 72,300 in chips, was the ever-consistent Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler. He managed to win a decent pot in Level 11 (500/1,000/100) against Zachary “zackmorris99” Donovan, who won the WSOP Circuit Foxwoods Event #1 $365 NLHE Re-Entry for $48,112.

In the hand, Kessler opened for 2,500 from the hijack seat and the player in the cutoff seat called. Donovan then moved all in from the button for 10,700, the blinds folded, and Kessler made a quick call. The cutoff seat took his time before folding and the cards were turned up.

Donovan: {A-Spades}{10-Spades}
Kessler: {A-Hearts}{J-Clubs}

Kessler had Donovan out-kicked, and according to the PokerNews Odds Calculator, he was a 64.50% favorite to win the hand. The {4-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} flop saw that increase to 79.19%, while the {5-Diamonds} turn left Donovan, who only had a 6.82% chance of surviving, asking for a three to chop or ten to double. Unfortunately for him, the dealer did not oblige, and he was eliminated from the tournament.

Day 1b saw many of the fallen fire another bullet, but it didn’t prove fruitful for the likes of Kurt Jewell, Ronnie Pease, Micah Raskin, Roland Israelashvili, Chris Tryba, Victor Ramdin, Jamie Kerstetter and the Massey Bros. — Ralph and Aaron.

"They got me," Ralph Massey yelled to his brother from across the room in Level 9 (300/600/75). It happened when Massey opened for 1,300 and received calls from three opponents, one being Bobby Corcione. Massey then bet 2,850 on the {Q-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop, Corcione raised to 10,000, and the other players folded. Massey responded by moving all in for a bit over 30,000 and Corcione called.

Corcione: {5-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Massey: {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}

Massey got it in good, but he needed to dodge the flush draw and backdoor straight draw of Corcione. He did so on the {6-Spades} turn, but he wasn't so fortunate as the {4-Hearts} spiked on the river to give Corcione the flush.

While many players fell throughout both starting flights, a number of notables advanced to Day 2. They include Greg Raymer (89,500), Nancy Birnbaum (109,500), John Dibella (30,400), Andy Frankenberger (94,000), Erek Gaines (133,600) and John Pito (124,900), all of whom advanced from Day 1a; while players like Igor Borukhov (180,000), Buck Ramsey (158,600) and Ylon Schwartz (73,900) all made it through from Day 1b.

Day 2 is set to resume at noon ET on Sunday. Be sure to join the PokerNews Live Reporting Team then for more great poker action from Foxwoods Casino!

You Guys All Die on the Way Home, Alright?

Level 11 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Will "The Thrill" Failla
Will "The Thrill" Failla

Will "The Thrill" Failla didn't play in the first starting flight, and things weren't going too well for here on Day 1b. The East Coast grinder expressed his interest in busting so he could re-enter at the start of Day 2, and his wish just came true.

It happened when Failla moved all in from middle position for 8,300 holding the {A-Spades}{2-Spades} and Jamey Kramer called him from the big blind with the {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}. "Give him a king," Failla told the dealer. The {2-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{9-Diamonds} flop failed to produce a king, as did the {J-Clubs} turn. Kramer would find no king on the river, but the {Q-Hearts} was just as good.

"There is a god," Failla exhaled before collecting his things and adding, "You guys all die on the way home, alright?" The rest of the players got a good laugh.

Great Call by Kourdourli in 90K Pot

Level 7 : 200/400, 50 ante
Nesrine Kourdourli
Nesrine Kourdourli

We saw Nesrine Kourdourli sitting with right around 90,000 in chips, and she was kind enough to tell us how she acquired the majority of them.

According to her, she three-bet to 2,700 after another player had opened for 1,100. An unknown player then four-bet to 6,300, the initial raised folded, and Kourdourli made the call, bringing about a flop of {J-}{10-}{4-}. Kourdourli proceeded to check-call a bet of 5,000 and then check-called another bet, this time 8,000, on the {K-Clubs} turn, which put to clubs on the board. When a {2-} peeled off on the river, Kourdourli checked for a third time and her opponent moved all in. Kourdourli tanked for a long time before calling off her last 18,000 with {A-}{4-} for a pair of fours, and she was glad she did as her opponent had missed with the {A-Clubs}{3-Clubs}.

Eric Rando Leads Day 1 as 123 Players Advance

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Foxwoods Day 1a chip leader Eric Rando, who bagged up 143,100.
Foxwoods Day 1a chip leader Eric Rando, who bagged up 143,100.

Day 1a is in the books here at Foxwoods, and by our counts Eric Rando of East Providence, Rhode Island leads the 123 surviving players with 143,100. We didn't catch Rando's big hand, but according to Andy Frankenberger, he got it when his {K-}{Q-} overcame {A-}{K-} and {A-}{Q-} in a three-way all-in situation.

Not far behind is Erek Gaines, who would have finished with the chip lead if not for a bad last level. In one hand, Gaines and Andrew Higgins each put in 8,500 preflop and saw a flop of {K-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}. Higgins moved all in for 51,500 and Gaines opted to throw away his hand, which he claimed was pocket jacks. Higgins showed the {A-Spades}{K-Spades}. Despite losing that hand, Gaines still finished the night with a heatlhy 133,600.

Others who punched their ticket to Day 2 in the first starting flight were Greg Raymer (89,500), Allen Kessler (72,300), Nancy Birnbaum (109,500), John Dibella (30,400) and the aforementioned Frankenberger (94,000).

The action is far from over here at Foxwoods as the Day 1b flight is still taking place. We pick up the action in Level 5. In the meantime, here are some notable counts from Day 1a:

Kessler Destroys Donovan

Zachary Donovan, who won Event #1 here at Foxwoods, was just eliminated from the tournament courtesy of Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler.

Frankenberger Fires Bullets at Epstein

Level 6 : 150/300, 25 ante
Andy Frankenberger on Day 1a of the 2013 WSOP Circuit Foxwoods.
Andy Frankenberger on Day 1a of the 2013 WSOP Circuit Foxwoods.

Andy Frankenberger opened for 675 from early position and received calls from Mark Epstein, who was in the cutoff, and the player in the small blind. The latter checked the {9-Hearts}{4-Spades}{9-Diamonds} flop, Frankenberger continued for 1,200, and only Epstein called.

Both players then checked the {9-Clubs} turn and Frankenberger led out for 3,800 when the {7-Spades} completed the board on the river. Epstein thought for over a minute before lobbing a pink T5,000 chip into the pot for a call, and it proved the wrong decision as Frankenberger rolled over the {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}. Epstein mucked.

First Time in Foxwoods: Day 1 Awaits

Foxwoods in Connecticut
Foxwoods in Connecticut

The World Series of Poker Circuit has wound its way back over to the east coast again for the 16th stop of the 2012-13 season, landing at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Like other WSOP-C stops, the Main Event here at Foxwoods is only one of a dozen ring events forming part of the schedule, with the eighth and ninth events concluding last night. Turnouts have been healthy all week as well, suggesting we'll be seeing a decent-sized field for today's Main Event.

Here's a look at how things have played out so far this week, including who has already secured coveted WSOP-C rings:

As has been the case at many WSOP-C Main Events, today's first day of play will actually include two separate Day 1 flights, and in fact the flights will be overlapping somewhat late this afternoon (details on that to come).

Those knocked out in the Day 1a flight will able to re-enter for the evening session if they wish, and any player busting once or twice today will still have an option to buy in once more prior to the start of Sunday's Day 2.

Stick with PokerNews as we'll be reporting from both Day 1 flights all day and night here at Foxwoods, then taking you right through to Monday's final table as we together find out who will be the next WSOP Circuit Main Event champion.
