2008 World Series of Poker
Event 18 - $5,000 No-Limit 2-7 Draw w/ Rebuys
Day: 2
Dwan Starts Rebuilding
Adams drew one; Dwan stood pat.
After seeing Dwan stand pat, Adams checked the action to him. Dwan obliged Adams with a bet of 13,400. Adams quickly check-raised to 34,100.
Dwan went into the tank for a solid minute. Finally, he threw the extra 20,700 into the middle to make the call. Adams tabled 10-8, but it wasn't good enough when Dwan flipped over a smooth 10 to rake in a 90,000 chip pot.
Short Stacks Making Their Moves
Simultaneously, on a different table, Jon Turner made his stand against Michael Binger and was not so fortunate. He has been eliminated from the tournament.
Matusow's Luck Turns Around
Mortensen's Glass Slipper Starting to Crack
After the draw, Mortensen checked to Adams, who followed with a bet of 17,000. Carlos gave the matter some thought, then called and mucked upon seeing Adams' 10-9.
Mortensen has only 19,000 remaining chips.
Phil Galfond Eliminated; Michael Mizrachi Triples Up
Mizrachi:
Flack:
Galfond: (mucked)
Mizrachi tripled up to approximately 70,000 while Flack dropped to 93,000. Galfond was eliminated.
Tom Dwan Gets the Best of Brandon Adams
Dwan bet 4,400 in the dark and Adams raised to 24,000. Dwan eventually made the call and Adams showed him a low. Dwan happily flipped up his low and took down the pot.
Michael Mizrachi Crippled by Layne Flack
Flack moved all in for 50,600 and Mizrachi made the call. Flack showed an low which barely bested the low of Mizrachi. Flack doubled to 170,000 leaving Mizrachi with a mere 1,800 chips.
The very next hand, Mizrachi tripled up against Michael Binger and Dario Alioto but is still very much on the short stack with just about 8,000 chips.
A Little Clowning at the Tables
Appleman Out
Appleman stood pat; Tony G drew one; and then Mizrachi also stood pat. The two live players, Tony G and Mizrachi, checked the action after the draw. Mizrachi showed J-5-4-3-2 to take the pot and eliminate Appleman.
After the hand was completed, Mizrachi, Tony G, Mike Matusow and David Benyamine got into an animated discussion about every player's decision on the draw. Matusow thought that Appleman made a bad decision to stay pat with what had to be a jack, due to the fact that his raise was called and over-called. Benyamine took issue with Mizrachi's comment that he couldn't bet his hand, no matter what he drew. All players agreed that Tony G had no choice but to check to Mizrachi after Mizrachi stood pat as last to act. If he had bet into Mizrachi, Mizrachi most certainly would have had to fold a jack.
Mizrachi defended his decision to stay pat and then check after the draw. "I'm not making any more money on the hand," he said.
"Are you crazy?" Benyamine responded. "What if you draw into the wheel, and Tony makes number two?"
The discussion continued long after Appleman departed.
