Ari Engel Has Been Eliminated

And on a sick little hand to boot. The player under the gun moved in for his last 450 and two middle-position players called before the action got to Engel in the small blind. He raised the pot (to around 2,250) and one of the middle-position players decided to stick around and call. The flop came {J-Diamonds} {10-Clubs} {7-Clubs} and Engel moved in for his last 875. His opponent made the call, saying, "I have nothing," and showing {A-Hearts} {K-Spades} {5-Spades} {4-Hearts} for a gutshot draw to Engel's {A-Clubs} {J-Hearts} {10-Hearts} {2-Hearts} and top two pair. A blank fell on the turn, but on the the river the {Q-Spades} spiked to give the other player Broadway and send Engel out of the tournament.

Steven Wong Eliminated

Seven players, including Steve Wong, limped to see a flop of {K-Spades} {7-Spades} {9-Hearts}. Wong bet out for 1,400 on the flop and only one of the players called. When the {K-Hearts} fell on the turn, Wong moved all in holding {A-Spades} {9-Spades} {8-Hearts} {2-Hearts} for a double flush option. His opponent held 10-10-8-8 for two pair and an open-ended straight draw. The {7-Diamonds} fell on the river and Wong was eliminated.

Joe Hachem Wins a Big Pot

Earlier today Joe Hachem chopped a pot after it looked like he was going to scoop and he said, "Can't win a pot. I haven't won a pot in a month." Perhaps an entire lunar cycle just flashed past because Hachem just won a nice pot that sent two players out of the tournament.

Hachem and Marco Traniello limped into the pot for 200 and a short-stacked player moved in for his last 325. Hachem then reraised enough to set Traniello all in and Marco made the call.

Hachem's held {A-Hearts} {A-Spades} {J-Clubs} {5-Spades} to Traniello's {A-Spades} {2-Spades} {7-Hearts} {7-Diamonds} and the short stack's {K-Spades} {K-Diamonds} {Q-Spades} {3-Hearts}. The {7-Clubs} {4-Clubs} {K-Hearts} gave the short stack a set and put Traniello in position to possibly win the low half of the pot, but the board ran out {Q-Spades} {10-Spades} to give Hachem the runner-runner straight, and with no low on the board he scooped the entire pot and sent Traniello and the short stack to the rail. Hachem is now up to 13,000.

Gavin Smith Eliminated

After just riding in the top seat on our chip count page, Gavin Smith has been eliminated.

Preflop, Gavin made it 700 to go and Barny Boatman moved all in from the button. Steve Graboski called the all-in, as did Gavin, and the flop ran {Q-Spades} {4-Diamonds} {6-Clubs}. Gavin bet the pot, which put him all in and Steve called. Gavin had flopped two pair holding {2-Diamonds} {3-Clubs} {6-Hearts} {4-Spades} while Steve held {A-Hearts} {2-Hearts} {8-Clubs} {5-Clubs}.

The {9-Diamonds} didn't help either player, but the {3-Diamonds} on the turn hit Steve perfectly, giving him the nut low and a straight. The board flushed Barny, who took a small percentage of the pot as well.

Gavin was eliminated while Steve Graboski became our new chip leader holding 26,000 in chips.

The Deuces Hold Up

Holding {A-Diamonds} {2-Hearts} {5-Spades} {2-Diamonds}, Sam Simon was up against an opponent's {A-?} {K-?} {Q-?} {3-?}. The board ran out {10-?} {4-?} {6-?} {8-?} {7-?} and Simon took the low with his A-2 and, remarkably, took the high when his pair of deuces held up. Simon is now up to 9,300.

Boyd Triples Up

After flopping a set on a board of {J-Spades} {9-Hearts} {8-Spades} with pocket jacks, Dutch Boyd found himself all in with two other players. One held the nut straight, which was no good when the {8-Hearts} fell on the river to pair the board. After hitting his full house, Boyd is up to 12,000.

Hard Day to be a Dealer

Pot Limit Omaha H/L has to be a hard game for dealers in general. That becomes proven fact on hands like these:

On a board of {7-Diamonds} {8-Spades} {9-Spades} four players were all in.

Player 1: {K-Clubs} {10-Spades} {J-Hearts} {4-Spades}

Player 2: {A-Hearts} {2-Spades} {5-Clubs} {6-Hearts}

Player 3: {Q-Hearts} {K-Diamonds} {10-Clubs} {J-Diamonds}

Player 4: {A-Spades} {5-Spades} {8-Hearts} {7-Clubs}

The {3-Clubs} came on the turn and the {7-Hearts} on the river, giving one of the players the nut low and another player the full house. The player that had the full house was all in and covered by the other three, while the player with the nut low was the second shortstack.

That pot had a side pot that was halved, then a remaining pot that was halved as well.

More Than Half

More than half the field has been eliminated already after only four levels of play. We started the day at 720 and we're already down to 332. That's an average of 97 players per hour.
