Re-buys at the Rio

The first Tuesday of the 2008 World Series of Poker will also be the first day that the cry "Re-buy!" will be heard across the tournament floor. It's Event #5, $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em w/ Rebuys, a popular yet fun event that may see some of the deepest-bankrolled pros purchase chips a dozen or more times in their quest to build a early edge. It doesn't take a mass of re-buys to win, the event, however. Just ask Michael Chu, who captured the bracelet in this event and managed to do so without making a single re-buy. Chu's win over an 814-player field in 2007 was worth $585,774.

While "crazed" may not adequately describe the early action, there's plenty here for fans to enjoy. Play gets underway at noon in the Amazon Room. Check in with us here at PokerNews.com for the latest updates!

Almost Ready

There's a brief delay in the start of today's event, perhaps because the cage is doing a brisk business selling the casino chips players will need to use for the many, many, many rebuys that will be made today.

Shuffle Up And Deal!!!

Tournament Director Jack Effel just announced "Shuffle Up and Deal!"...and just that fast there were three or four calls of "Floor!!". Some confusion, perhaps, as the event starts.

Smaller Field, Many Pros

While the field may be notably smaller than Event #2, this $1,000 NL Hold'em rebuy tournament has a slew of professionals in attendance. Some of the professionals seen within the field thus far include Gavin Smith, James Mackey, T.J. Cloutier, Greg Raymer, Johnny Chan, Erick Lindgren, Thayer "Thay3r" Rasmussen, John "The Razor" Phan, Jeff Lisandro, Lee Watkinson, Dario Minieri, Ted Lawson, and Burt Boutin.

That's One

On his blog today Daniel Negreanu said he'd be happy if he spent $8,000 on rebuys and had a 20,000 stack. Well, he's already in for a grand--he raised to 500, was called by the player on the button, and moved in after a {10-Clubs} {4-Spades} {K-Hearts} flop. His opponent called and showed {Q-Clubs} {10-Hearts} , while Negreanu tabled {A-Spades} {4-Diamonds}. The board ran out {8-Clubs} {9-Spades} and Negreanu shouted, "Rebuy!!".

Add One for Boutin

A middle-position player led out preflop and Burt Boutin shoved all in. The middle-position player made the call and turned over pocket kings while Boutin showed pocket queens. Boutin failed to improve and added another rebuy to the prize pool.

Fashionably Late

Mike "The Mouth" Matusow just arrived to today's event to find himself seated at the same table as James "Mig.com" Mackey. Their table is directly behind Gavin Smith's, so their banter throughout this event should provide plenty of entertainment for those nearby.
