Event #44: $2,500 Mixed Hold'em

Day 1 Started

Let's Mix It Up

Welcome to Event #44, the $2,500 buy-in Mixed Hold'em event, the one in which players will be challenged to move back and forth between no-limit and fixed-limit hold'em. Each level in this event lasts for 60 minutes, with a half-hour each devoted to no-limit HE and fixed limit HE.

Last year Bahador Ahmadi bested a field of 527 in this event to take the $278,804 first prize and bracelet.

Action gets underway at noon local time. Stay tuned.

Game On!

The staff has run through all the announcements, and all that's left is to get the cards flying. There are a conspicuous number of empty seats in the room, and it has a few players looking around with a confused gaze.

T.D. Jimmy had the answer: "We have at least eight seats sold at every table. So these players are just late."

With that, the cards are in the air, and Event #44 is a go. We're playing no-limit hold'em for the first half hour.

We Have Players

After a couple of hands dealt in a relatively empty room, seats are filling up quickly here as the first hands are being dealt.

Some familiar faces among those taking a shot at this one, including Richard Brodie, Justin Bonomo, Issac Haxton, Kevin Saul, Terrence Chan, Erica Schoenberg, Jon Van Fleet, Dwyte Pilgrim, and Alexander Gomes.

More Faces in the Crowd

Some more folks arriving to play these initial hands of no-limit hold'em in Level 1: Alex Kamberis, Andy Black, Theo Tran, Ylon Schwartz, Antonio Esfandiari, Bertrand Grospellier, and Sorel Mizzi.

Joe Sebok and Joe Serock are both here with their similar-sounding names. And Phil Ivey, to whom there is no comparison, has arrived as well.

Esfandiari v. Sebok

No-Limit

Antonio Esfandiari and Joe Sebok are sitting together to start the day today, and we just caught them involved in a small pot. On a flop of {7-Spades}{4-Spades}{5-Spades}, Esfandiari led out with a bet of 550 and Sebok called.

Both players checked the {9-Hearts} turn, and the {2-Spades} filled out the board on fifth street. Esfandiari fired another 1,000 chips at the pot, but Sebok raised it right up to 2,200. Esfandiari couldn't call, and his fold pushes him down to about 5,800 here in the early going.

Cunningham Loses a Few Early

Allen Cunningham
Allen Cunningham

No-Limit

Allen Cunningham opened with a raise from the cutoff seat, and the player on the button reraised to 425. The blinds got out, then Cunningham kicked it up to 1,200, and his opponent called.

The flop came {K-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{6-Hearts}. Cunningham fired 1,700, and his opponent promptly raised to 3,700, forcing a fold from Cunningham.

The five-time WSOP bracelet winner is quickly down to 4,600.

Kamberis' Downward Start

No-Limit

In a multi-way raised pot, Alex Kamberis fired a bet of 1,125 on a {10-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} flop. Only one opponent called, a player we don't recognize, and they went heads up the rest of the way.

The turn brought the {5-Diamonds} and another bet from Kamberis, 1,925 this time. His opponent called again, and both men check-checked the {5-Diamonds} river. Kamberis showed his airball {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades} first, and his opponent's {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} stole the pot and pushed "AJKHoosier" down around 4,000 to start his day off trending in the wrong direction.

Some Bets for Bonomo

Justin Bonomo
Justin Bonomo

Limit

Justin Bonomo raised from middle position, and it folded back to Jeffrey King who called from the big blind. King is fresh off a runner-up performance in last night's Event No. 39, the $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout -- his fifth WSOP final table!

The flop came {K-Spades}{4-Spades}{7-Hearts}. King checked, Bonomo bet (100), King check-raised, and Bonomo called. The turn was the {J-Spades}. King checked again, Bonomo bet again (200 this time), and King called.

The river was the {2-Spades}, putting a fourth spade on the board. King check-called Bonomo's bet, and Bonomo showed {A-Spades}{J-Hearts} for the nut flush. Bonomo chips up to 8,600, while King has 6,400.
