Arieh, Rast Lead to Start Day 4

Josh Arieh
Josh Arieh

Welcome to Day 4 of Event No. 55, the $50,000 Poker Player's Championship! Just 29 of the 128 who entered this event remain with chips. Yet after fighting through three tough days and fifteen 100-minute levels, no one has won anything yet, as only the top 16 finishers make the money.

It was a day of wild swings yesterday, with many players bouncing back and forth from short-stacked status to the top of the counts. Josh Arieh finished Day 3 on the biggest upswing, ending atop the counts with more than 1.8 million.

Meanwhile Brian Rast -- all in and needing to hit early in the day in a 2-7 triple draw hand -- rebounded all of the way back to end the day in second place with a little over 1.63 million. George Lind III, Vladimir Shchemelev, Phil Hellmuth, and Scott Seiver will all be returning to million-plus chip stacks as well today.

The plan today is to continue the eight-game mix format all of the way down to a final table, at which point the game will switch to no-limit hold'em only for tomorrow's Day 5. Cards go in the air at 3 p.m. Vegas time. See you back here then for start-to-finish coverage of Day 4!

No-Limit Hold'em

Phil Galfond entered the day as the short stack with 47,000 chips, and got them all in the middle on the first hand of the day. Josh Arieh opened to 27,000 on the button, Galfond moved all in from the big blind, and Arieh called.

Arieh: {q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Galfond: {q-Spades}{6-Hearts}

Galfond was crushed, and exited after the board ran {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{3-Clubs}.

Oppenheim Out

Level 16

No-Limit Hold'em

David Oppenheim returned to a short stack today, and on one of the first hands dealt committed his last 150,000 or so with a preflop raise from middle position. It folded to George Lind in the small blind who called the raise, and after a bit of study Gus Hansen folded the big blind.

Oppenheim {J-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Lind {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}

The board ran out {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}{2-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}, and Lind's hand remained best. Oppenheim is out in 28th, while Lind improves to 1.45 million.

Lamb Quads

No-Limit Hold'em

Sebastian Ruthenberg opened to 25,000 from middle position, Sebastien Sabic called in the small blind, and Ben "Benba" Lamb defended his big. All three players knuckled on the {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{3-Clubs} flop, and the turn was the {a-Spades}. Sabic checked, Lamb fired 38,000, Ruthenberg folded, and Sabic called.

The river was another ace - the {a-Hearts} - and Sabic checked a third time. Lamb quickly bet 160,000, forcing Sabic to go into the tank. Sabic eventually called, and Lamb opened up {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for quad aces.

Hansen's Antics

Level 16

No-Limit Hold'em

Minh Ly raised from middle position to 23,000. Action folded to Gus Hansen in the small blind and he went through some antics before actually acting on his hand.

First, Hansen asked Robert Mizrachi in the big blind how much he had. Mizrachi began to count and Hansen responded, "O.K., that's good enough." Hansen then took two blue T5,000 chips and tossed them to George Lind on his right and asked for change.

He then picked up a water bottle on the chair to his left, asked Mizrachi if it was his or anyone else at the table if it was theirs. Everyone declined and then Hansen took a big swig of it. Then, he three-bet to 62,000. Action folded back to Ly and he also gave it up to allow Hansen to win the pot.

Broadway vs. Broadway

No-Limit Hold'em

Ben "Benba" Lamb opened to 28,000 in late position, Sebastian Ruthenberg called out of the small blind, and the flop came down {j-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}. Ruthenberg checked, Lamb bet 35,000, and Ruthenberg called.

The turn was the {q-Diamonds}, and Ruthenberg check-called another bet from Lamb - this one was worth 110,000.

The river was the {a-Spades}, Ruthenberg checked a third time, and Lamb fired 145,000. Ruthenberg called.

Ruthenberg: {k-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Lamb: {k-Spades}{4-Spades}

Both players made Broadway on the river, and chopped the pot.
