Back-to-Back Hands Propel Cantu into Round of Eight

[user101598] • Level 17: 2,000-4,000, 500 ante
Brandon Cantu

Daniel Buzgon raised to 10,000 on the button, Brandon Cantu three-bet to 32,000 out of the big blind, and Buzgon called. Cantu led out for 35,000 when the flop fell {3-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}, Buzgon called, and the turn brought the {k-Clubs}. The pair checked.

The {8-Hearts} completed the board, Cantu fired out 60,000, and Buzgon called. Cantu tabled {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds} for jacks and threes, winning the pot.

That pot gave Cantu the lead once again, and on the very next hand he raised on the button. Buzgon defended, and the flop fell {k-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{6-Spades}. Buzgon checked, Cantu continued for 11,000, and Buzgon check-raised to 26,000. Cantu re-raised to 65,000, Buzgon moved all in for around 290,000, and Cantu called.

Buzon: {k-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}
Cantu: {7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}

Buzgon was in great shape to double and take a commanding lead in the match, but the {6-Clubs} turned, giving Cantu a full house. The {2-Diamonds} bricked on the river, and just like that the match was over.

"Breaks like this don't happen for me," Cantu said after the hand to our reporter. "What coolers."

Buzgon shared his post-game thoughts on Twitter:

Daniel BuzgonDoubled quick. Then gave most back. Then got it in top two vs bottom two and didn't win. And Phil lost. #doubletilt
Daniel BuzgonWon't lie. Pretty bummed. So close in this tourney again. But am picked up by the overwhelming support I got. #onedaysoon

Cantu will play the winner of the Max Steinberg/Ariel Celestino match.
