Cantu and Buzgon Will Face Off in the Round of 16

Level 15 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Brandon Cantu
Brandon Cantu

The comeback was not in the cards for Govert Metaal today. Moments ago he was all in and at risk of a flop of {q-Spades}{6-Spades}{6-Hearts} holding {q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}. Brandon Cantu had him crushed with {j-Clubs}{6-Clubs}, and held as the turn and river came {k-Hearts}, {7-Diamonds}.

On the other end of that table, Daniel Buzgon limped in on the button, Alexander Lakhov checked his option, and the dealer fanned {6-Spades}{q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}. Lakhov checked, Buzgon fired 7,500, and Lakhov check-raised to 20,000. Buzgon called. The turn was the {10-Diamonds}, Lakhov moved all in, and Buzgon called.

Lakhov: {q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Buzgon: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}

The {6-Clubs} bricked off on the river, and Lakhov was eliminated. Buzgon and Cantu will face off in the round of 16, and the latter will have a 2.5:1 chip advantage.

Paur Flips the Script

Level 15 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

No. 21 seed Taylor Paur checked to No. 12 seed Jason Koon on a flop of {j-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{9-Spades}. Koon tossed out a bet, Paur check-raised, Koon moved all in for effectively 77,200, and Paur called.

Paur: {j-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}
Koon: {9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}

Koon would need a six to win or running aces, kings, or queens to chop, and the {q-Hearts} on the turn was paint. The river was paint as well, but the {k-Diamonds} was a brick, and Paur doubled.

Lieu Traps Himself, Timoshenko Advances

Level 15 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Yevgeniy Timoshenko
Yevgeniy Timoshenko

Yevgeniy Timoshenko and Paul Lieu had both gone all in several hands in a row from the button. In his last hand, Paul Lieu asked for Timoshenko to do it again.

"Come on brother," he said. "All in. One stack. Just do it."

Timoshenko obliged and put enough chips in to cover Lieu. Lieu quickly called.

Timoshenko: {Q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}
Lieu: {A-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

"What a set up!" Lieu said as he bemoaned his fate. "Ace one time!"

But the dealer did not put up the ace for him as the board ran out {2-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{X-}, giving Timoshenko the win and advancing him to the round of 16.

Summer of Science

Level 16 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Mike Watson
Mike Watson

Nick Binger entered his match at a chip disadvantage against Dominik Nitsche, but whittled the German down to 60,000 chips or so, taking the chip lead. In the final hand, Binger raised to 6,000 on the button, Nitsche moved all in, and Binger called.

Binger: {a-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}
Nitsche: {k-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}

The board came {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{a-Hearts}{7-Spades}, and Nitsche was eliminated. Binger, who is just the second underdog to advance, will take on Isaac Hagerling on the second round.

Over on another table, No. 5 seed Mike Watson eliminated No. 28 seed Mazin Khoury. Khoury check-called a bet on a flop of {q-Spades}{8-Spades}{2-Spades}, then check-jammed when the {4-Clubs} turned. Watson called.

Watson: {j-Spades}{10-Spades}
Khoury: {8-Clubs}{4-Hearts}

Khoury didn't fill up on the river, and was eliminated. Watson will take on the winner of the Jason Koon/Taylor Paur match.

Fernandez Doubles Through Kerignard

Level 16 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Yorane Kerignard had a commanding lead on Pedro Fernandez, but not anymore after Fernandez caught a lucky card to stay alive and double up.

On the button Fernandez raised to 6,000. From the big blind Kerignard reraised to 14,000. Fernandez just called. On the flop of {5-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{10-Spades} Kerignard made a bet and Fernandez moved all in, only to be snap called.

Kerignard was ahead as he had flopped two pair with {4-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}, but Fernandez was still live with his {J-Spades}{10-Diamonds}. The turn was the {10-Hearts} and it left Kerignard drawing dead. The river was the meaningless {9-Clubs} and Fernandez notched himself a very important double up.

Gnatenko Loses Massive Lead; Doubles

Level 16 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

Ukrainian (7) Oleksandr Gnatenko , who started his match with a 4:1 chip lead, moved all in on the button for 54,300. Serbian (26) Ognjen Sekularac made the call.

Gnatenko: {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}
Sekularac: {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}

The {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} flop gave Sekularac a set of sixes and the lead, but Gnatenko could survive with an eight for a straight or a seven for a better set. The {5-Diamonds} bricked off on the turn, but the {7-Hearts} spiked on the river to give Gnatenko a better set.

He doubled to 109,600 chips, but Sekularac still has the lead with 227,800.
