Dragon's Breath

Level 16 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
David "The Dragon" Pham is Breathing Fire Here On Day 2
David "The Dragon" Pham is Breathing Fire Here On Day 2

After being crippled with pocket aces on an earlier hand, David "The Dragon" Pham moved his last 37,800 into the middle with {q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}, but he was quickly called by Glynn Beebe and his {K-Hearts}{j-Spades}.

When the flop fell {6-Hearts}{3-Spades}{k-Spades}, Pham's luck appeared to have run out, but the {8-Hearts} on the turn provided him with a lifeline.

River: {Q-Clubs}

After using a miracle suckout to end Day 1 with a big stack, and losing those chips to another brutal beat here today, Pham has rode the roller coaster known as shorthanded NLH play to stabilize himself.

From Russia With Love

Level 16 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Ivan Demidov is Riding the Roller Coaster Here on Day 2
Ivan Demidov is Riding the Roller Coaster Here on Day 2

Two consecutive hands saw Ivan Demidov's stack shattered and rebuilt in short order.

First, Demidov opened for 7,000 and then called Stephen Chidwick's three-bet of 17,500 to take a flop of {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{2-Clubs}. Both players checked the baby card board, but when the {a-Hearts} turned, Demidov check-called a bet of 25,000. The {q-Spades} then completed the board on the river, and Demidov checked for a third time.

When Chidwick fired a bet of 75,000 forward, the Russian pro flatted and turned over his {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} for top two pair. Unfortunately for Demidov, Chidwick held the {K-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for trips on the flop, and he strung Demidov along the whole way.

On the very next deal, however, the Demidov managed to get his last 157,000 into the middle holding {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}. Day 1 chip leader Nick Schwarmann looked him up with {6-Spades}{6-Hearts}. When the board ran out a clean {9-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{3-Spades}{3-Clubs} for Demidov, the Russian's snowmen had survived, giving him a crucial double to more than rebound from his previous loss.

Mike DeGilo Busts One, Blinds Off Another

Level 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Daniel Park's Defenseless Stack Presented Easy Pickings for Mike DeGilio
Daniel Park's Defenseless Stack Presented Easy Pickings for Mike DeGilio

Just a few hands into the latest level of play, Mike DeGilio and Vojtech Ruzicka found themselves playing a heads-up contest, as the chip leading Daniel Park has yet to return from the recent dinner break.

With nobody left to play against but each other, DeGilio and Ruzicka soon engaged in a clash, as DeGilio took his {A-Clubs}{J-Hearts} against the Czech pro's {J-Clubs}{7-Clubs} in an all-in pot. When the board rolled out {a-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{10-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{k-Spades}, DeGilio notched the knockout, and left himself with nobody to play with but Park's solitary stack.

After the dealer pitched a pair of hands, one to DeGilio and the other to Park's chips, a pot comprised of blinds and antes was immediately pushed to DeGilio.

"This is the easiest tournament I've ever played in," said DeGilio, raking in another small portion of Park's stack. "I'm running good."

After five or six hands of this the fun ended for DeGilio, and two new tablemates arrived to present some living breathing competition.

Ivan Another River Card

Level 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Ivan Demidov Was One Card Away from Eliminating Nick Schwarmann
Ivan Demidov Was One Card Away from Eliminating Nick Schwarmann

With the Day 1 chip leader Nick Schwarmann on the ropes, Ivan Demidov went for the kill shot with {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}, after the short-stacked Schwarmann moved all in for his last 69,000 with {J-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}.

The dealer fanned a flop of {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} across the felt, and while Demidov found four diamonds, Schwarmann jumped into the lead with trip jacks. The {K-Clubs} on the turn gave Demidov a pair, and a pair of additional outs with which to eliminate Schwarmann, but the {6-Spades} on the river was the definition of a blank.

Little did Demidov know, but this blank on the river would prove to be pivotal, as it gave Schwarmann a second lease on life and about 140,000 in chips. Soon afterward, Schwarmann and Demidov tangled again, with the Russian pro and member of the original November Nine coming up on the wrong end of things once more.

Schwarmann eliminated the dangerous Demidov to move back into the familiar position of holding a dominant chip lead at his table.

The Dragon Devours Dandrea

Level 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
David "The Dragon" Pham Here on Day 2
David "The Dragon" Pham Here on Day 2

After an opening raise, Raymond Dandrea three-bet to 24,000, with David "The Dragon" Pham four-betting to 65,000. After Dandrea flatted to see the flop fall {q-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{6-Clubs}, Pham checked and then snap-called Dandrea's all-in bet, which actually put "The Dragon" all in for his last 83,000.

Showdown:

Pham: {Q-Spades}{6-Spades}
Dandrea: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}

Pham hit the flop hard with top two pair, and he was way in front of Dandrea's pocket nines. The {6-Diamonds} on the turn gave Pham a full house, and the {4-Clubs} on the river gave him the win. This hand left Dandrea essentially crippled, while Pham solidified his position as the march to the final table continues.

Stephen Chidwick Sends Nicolas Cardyn Home

Level 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Stephen Chidwick Has Chipped Up Consistently Throughout Day 2
Stephen Chidwick Has Chipped Up Consistently Throughout Day 2

A short-stacked Nicolas Cardyn moved all in for his last 83,500 out of the small blind, and at a four-handed table his {K-Clubs}{8-Clubs} actually figured to be a favorite against a caller with a random hand.

Sure enough, Stephen Chidwick looked him up with {Q-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}, and Cardyn was in good shape to score the double if the board ran out clean.

The flop of {7-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{7-Spades} was clean enough, but the {Q-Diamonds} on the turn was dirty for Cardyn. When the {Q-Spades} fell on the river, Cardyn's tournament was over in 18th place, and Chidwick added another notch to his belt.

DeGilio Deactivates Dandrea

Level 18 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Mike DeGilio Has Claimed the Chip Lead Late on Day 2
Mike DeGilio Has Claimed the Chip Lead Late on Day 2

Riding a short stack, Raymond Dandrea got his last 84,000 into the middle holding {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}, and when Michael DeGilio called him down, he was hoping to be in a coin flip situation.

Unfortunately for Dandrea, DeGilio held {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} and the overpair put him in command going to the flop, which came {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. Like the fabled tin man, Dandrea had no heart, and the flop put him even further behind with only one out left in the deck.

The turn came {3-Diamonds}, and Dandrea was down to a 2% shot at survival.

River: {6-Clubs}

Fifth street was just a long and lonely walk for Dandrea, and he hits the rail with a 16th place finish. DeGilio, meanwhile, moved into the chip lead with the win.

Counterfeit Money

Level 18 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
David Pham's Hand Was Caught Trying to Pass Counterfeit Money
David Pham's Hand Was Caught Trying to Pass Counterfeit Money

David Pham raised Jared Jaffee's led out bet of 15,000, making it 44,000 to play on the {6-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{8-Clubs} flop.

When the {10-Diamonds} hit the board on the turn, both players opted to tap the table, and the {10-Hearts} completed the board on the river.

Two more checks brought the players to the showdown, and Jaffee rolled over the {J-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for two pair.

Pham winced when he saw the cards, and took one last look at his {6-Clubs}{9-Clubs} before tossing them into the muck. Pham had flopped two pair, but his hand was counterfeited on the river.

"I wanted to get it in on the turn," said Jaffee with a laugh. "That was a monster turn card for me."

"We get it in on flop," retorted Pham, his cryptic words having no impact on Jaffee as he stacked his newly acquired chips.

Antonio Lafosse Eliminated in 12th Place ($15,413)

Level 19 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Antonio Lafosse - 12th Place
Antonio Lafosse - 12th Place

Two of the shorter stacks left in contention just went to war, and it was Antonio Lafosse's chip stack that was left ravaged and depleted.

Lafosse called the 74,000 all-in bet of Justin Oliver, who held {K-Spades}{J-Clubs}, and tabled the {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} to put Oliver at risk.

Flop: {j-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{2-Spades}

The perfect flop for Oliver left Lafosse looking for an ace, but the {10-Diamonds} missed him on the turn. He did pick up a gutshot draw to the Broadway straight, but the {8-Hearts} on the river left him with the second best hand, and a micro-stack with which to attempt his comeback.

Shortly thereafter, Lafosse moved all in with {6-Hearts}{4-Hearts}, but John Juanda finished him off with {A-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} on the {a-Spades}{8-Spades}{3-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} board. Lafosse exited in 12th place, while Oliver was left to thank an appearance by his girlfriend Stephanie, and their hoodie-clad pooch Cha-Cha, for the sudden infusion of good fortune.

Goran Filipovic Eliminated in 11th Place ($15,413)

Level 19 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Goran Filipovic
Goran Filipovic

Goran Filipovic has been eliminated in 11th place and wins $15,413 in prize money.

Michael DeGilio led for 21,000 from the small blind with the board reading {10-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{7-Hearts} and Filipovic, next to act, raised all in for 63,000. Daniel Park had the button in his possession and he cold called the all in bet. DeGilio called and it was three way to the {5-Clubs} river, one man being all in.

Both active players checked the river, DeGilio stating,

"I have a set," and showing {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}.

Park showed {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades} and had hit a flush on the river, prompting an angry muck from Filipovic who we suspect may have been good up to fifth street, but we will never know because he mucked his hand.
