The Penny Drops; We'll Have a New Champ

Barry Shulman
Barry Shulman

Barry Shulman was down under 25,000 when he got his money in with {A-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds}, running his suited ace into Guy Gorelik's {8-Clubs} {8-Diamonds}.

Board: {K-Diamonds} {7-Hearts} {3-Spades} {2-Diamonds} {K-Clubs}

That's all she wrote for the defending champion of this event, despite getting off to a good start yesterday. He's out with about 90 players left, and we'll have a first-time WSOPE Main Event winner later this week as Annette Obrestad, John Juanda, and now Shulman have all failed in their bids for a repeat title.

The Thrill is Gone

A frustrated Will Failla has been relieved of the rest of his stack.

"The Thrill" got his last 27,000 into the middle with ace-king, and he was racing for double or nothing against Rudy Blondeau's pocket queens.

Failla "won the race" as he says, hitting a king on the river. He lost the hand, though; Blondeau flopped a flush draw with the {Q-Hearts} in his hand, and the {K-Hearts} river was the wrong out for Failla.

His day is done, though we hope he's sticking around to cause some trouble in London for a few more days.

Better to be Lucky than Good

Patrik Selin is up to over 180k after doubling through the unlucky Fabian Quoss. Quoss opened to 3,800 from the hijack to face a 11,000 three-bet from Selin in the SB. Quoss asked for a count of his opponent's stack and when he found out it was about 90,000 he four-bet to 30,000. Very quickly Selim moved all-in and Quoss shook his head and groaned. He was halfway through asking for an exact count but then an called. Show down:

Selin: {q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Quoss: {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}

Selin smiled at being slightly caught at it and said "It's okay, I'm lucky. I'm lucky."

The board ran {2-Spades}{3-Spades}{j-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{q-Spades} to make trips for Selin. Quoss shook his head while Selin continued "It's better to be lucky than good!"

Quoss counted out the extra he needed to pay and then stared down at his decimated stack which is currently at 27,000.

After The High...

And all the way back down and out for Ludovic Lacay, who had 3-bet preflop on the button against Daniel Steinberg's cutoff raise before continuing his aggression on the {K-Spades} {7-Clubs} {4-Diamonds} flop once Steinberg had checked.

Steinberg though check-raised Lacay's 10,400 bet to 27,500 to which Lacay pushed all-in. Steinberg tanked for a minute before calling off his stack with {K-Hearts} {10-Clubs} but his read was right as Lacay only had {Q-Hearts} {4-Hearts} which couldn't improve on the {J-Hearts} turn or the {9-Diamonds} river. Steinberg picked up a 200,000 chip pot as a result.

Lacay busted soon after, all-in with {8-Clubs} {8-Diamonds} against Guy Gorelik's {J-Spades} {J-Clubs} and failing to spike.

Breathe Easy

Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

On the flop of {10-Spades}{9-Spades}{7-Hearts}, Phil Ivey was up first and checked. Nicolas Levi checked next and then action fell on Anton Wigg. He fired 7,200 and Ivey made the call. Levi got out of the way.

The turn brought the {3-Clubs} and Ivey checked. Wigg also checked to see the {2-Spades} roll off on the river. Ivey checked and Wigg bet 13,700. Ivey went into the tank for several long minutes. He paused his iPod, took off his headphones, asked Wigg to see his stack, leaned over and looked and studied Wigg for awhile, all while tanking. He eventually went back to checking his hand and then tossed it away, allowing Wigg to pick up the pot.

Wigg moved back to 100,000 and Ivey dropped to 265,000.

Fallin'

"I know i shouldn't've did that, I know its gon' come right back"
"I know i shouldn't've did that, I know its gon' come right back"

From middle position, Bojan Gledovic raised to 4,000 and Phil Ivey called from the button. These were the only two players to see the flop and it came down {K-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{7-Spades}. Both checked.

The turn brought the {3-Diamonds} and both checked again as the dealer placed the {2-Hearts} on the river. Gledovic fired 8,000 and Ivey tossed his hand away, falling a bit more to 260,000.

Mattern Likes His Four Play

Arnaud Mattern opened preflop to 3,800 before Brian Powell made it 10,700 next to him. Mattern then cold 4-bet to 26,500 and Powell made the call.

The flop was {K-} {2-} {3-} and Mattern fired out 23,500 resulting in a quick call from his opponent. On the {7-} turn, Mattern now bet 36,500 and Powell tanked before eventually folding. Mattern showed him the {4-}.

Kid Poker Not Kidding Around

Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu's running so hot now you could fry an egg on his forehead! After barely having his starting stack during the break, he's now above average with 126,000.

You can tell by the relief on his face when he doubled up after dinner just how much this event means to him. Last year, he was desperately close to toppling Barry Shulman heads-up to become the 2009 WSOPE Champion, but he was ultimately forced to settle for second after an epic battle.

Only the title can improve on last year's showing, and after his recent surge, first is the only position he'll be eying up.
