The Insiders: A Gaming Industry Profile of Vont Limited's Jon Sykes

On Tuesday, Antanas “Tony G” Guoga announced his intentions to pursue legal action against the Alderney Gambling Control Commission for its negligence in handling the situation at Full Tilt Poker. In an exclusive statement to PokerNews, Guoga said that he believes the AGCC knew about the mismanagement at Full Tilt Poker and failed to exhibit due diligence for its licensees and should be held responsible.

The company managing Guoga’s claim will be Vont Limited, a gaming consultancy company located on the Isle of Man. Formed in 2010 by Guoga and CEO Jon Sykes, Vont offers industry expertise across a wide range of services and provides its clients with a “one-stop shop” for all their e-business and gaming needs.

Sykes is the man behind the wheel of Vont. The 38-year-old has 15 years of experience in the corporate service-provider industry and has been providing licensing services to his clients for over eight years.

PokerNews caught up with Sykes to learn more about his background and the role of Vont Limited in the e-gaming industry.

For those who may not be familiar with your company, how did you get your start in the industry? How did Vont Limited come about?

I’ve worked in the corporate service provider industry on the Isle of Man for over 15 years and as such have had the good fortune of being involved in the Island’s e-gaming industry from the start. Vont was the brainchild of Tony G and me, as we felt that there was a gap in the market for a one-stop shop multijurisdictional licensing and consultancy provider to the gaming and e-business sector.

Tony G is a very prominent figure in poker. Where did your business relationship with him begin?

Tony and I met a number of years ago when I was working on a licensing project for him. We met a few times on the Isle of Man and it quickly became clear that there was a lot more the island could offer him and his businesses, and our relationship grew from there.

Do you feel like there was anything in particular that pushed you toward the e-gaming industry?

I have always had a keen interest in gaming and love the varied nature of the industry. Nothing ever stands still and the landscape is ever changing which presents new and challenging issues for my clients and I get a kick out of providing them with the solutions that they need.

What types of services do you provide for e-gaming companies? And what kind of clients are you working with?

Vont provides a wide range of bespoke [custom] solutions to both gaming and e-business companies, including Multi-Jurisdictional Licensing, Provision of Expert Witnesses, Consultancy & Project Management services. We also have a strong finance arm with the capacity to manage the requirements of large international companies.

Every client is different and during the initial consultation stage we ensure that we fully understand the business model and tailor solutions to meet their exacting requirements.

Clients range from gaming operators who might be looking for assistance with additional gaming licenses, more cost effective payment processing and banking options or advice on corporate structuring for their existing business, to startups looking for a complete solution to go live including assistance with corporate structuring, licensing, banking, payment processing, and marketing.

Could you tell us a little bit of what you do at Vont on a day-to-day basis?

My role in Vont is to provide project management services to my clients and to find solutions to problems they may face. I work with an extremely varied range of clients; on the gaming side these include new and existing operators, software providers and payment processors. However, we also provide services to a number of other industries.

How has your previous work experience helped you achieve your goals at Vont?

Having been working in the industry for over eight years, I have established a large network of contacts and introducers of business that have proved invaluable to Vont's success. Clients come to Vont as they know we consistently deliver and we receive a large amount of referrals from key suppliers who value the cost effective and timely services we provide to their clients.

Whilst gaming is a massive international industry, experience has taught me that gaming clients don’t warm to the standard business approach, and I believe Vont sets itself apart from its competitors in the way that we interact with our clients, we make a point of fostering strong relationships with them and ensure that they know that they are not just a number.
