Bumper Field Expected in Second Starting Day at Barcelona

2019 888poker LIVE Barcelona
2019 888poker LIVE Barcelona

At 6 p.m. local time, the second starting day of the 2019 888poker LIVE Barcelona €1,100 Main Event kicks off at Casino Barcelona and a bumper field is expected to sit down at the poker tables in the poker room and Cotton Candy area when the cards get in the air. Yesterday's first flight attracted a field of 109 entries and Demetrio Caminita topped the leader board with a massive stack of 426,000.

While all eyes in the poker world are already set on the 2019 World Series of Poker, which kicked off just a few days ago, the winner of the flagship event in the Spanish metropolis with a guaranteed prize pool of €550,000 will also get the chance to play in the Main Event in Sin City for free, courtesy of WSOP sponsor 888poker. On top of the trophy and cash prize, the winner here in Barcelona will also receive a package worth $12,600 for the 2019 WSOP Main Event Las Vegas!

The registration for the €1,100 Main Event remains open throughout the first 12 levels of 45 minutes each and until the cards are back in the air for Day 2. All participants receive 30,000 in chips and unlimited re-entries can be purchased during the registration period. There will be a 45-minute dinner break and play is expected to include past 4 a.m. local time.

The tournament also features a 30-second shot clock right from the start and all players receive four time banks of 30 seconds when they sit down. In previous editions of the 888poker LIVE tour, the shot clock was just introduced on Day 2 and this time all players get to experience from the very first time they receive cards in the event.

Defending champion Adrian Costin Constantin, who defeated a field of 709 entries one year ago, will certainly be back to try and defend his title. The Romanian final-tabled the €2,200 High Roller the previous night and finished in 5th place.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor to provide all the action, and there will also be a live stream with hole cards displayed on a security delay of 30 minutes on the 888poker Facebook and YouTube page after the first break on Day 1c, Day 2 and from start to finish on the final day.

At the same time as Day 1a of the 2019 888poker LIVE Barcelona Festival €1,100 Main Event, the €2,200 High Roller played down to a champion on the second tournament day. Registration remained open until the cards went back in the air and a field of 87 entries emerged with the top nine spots taking home a share of the €167,040 prize pool.

Only the top nine spots were paid and plenty of big names fell before that including the 888poker ambassadors Chris Moorman, Martin Jacobson and Ana Marquez to name just a few. The bubble burst in cruel fashion when Francois Evard got his last few chips in with pocket nines and Jesus Cortes, who boosted his chip lead on the bubble significantly, hit two pair with six-five.

A few hours later, it would indeed be Cortes, a former EPT Main Event finalist and recent Super High Roller participant, that lifted the trophy for the winner shots.

Jon Gurrutxaga was the first to cash and he recorded another result at Casino Barcelona after his deep run in the WPT Main Event not long ago. Maor Glam, Gisle Olsen and Thierry Gogniat became the next casualties and especially Olsen was quite happy with his result as he had dropped to just over one big blind at some point.

Defending €1,100 Main Event champion Adrian Costin Constantin had to settle for fifth place. The Romanian first lost ace-king against jack-ten suited and failed to get there for the rest of it with ace-nine suited versus pocket sixes. Isabel Baltazar then fell victim to the surge of Cortes, who got there with king-eight suited versus ace-queen suited thanks to an eight on the flop.

Vivian Saliba
888poker ambassador Vivian Saliba finished 3rd in the High Roller

Down to the last three, Sonny Franco and Cortes were the big stacks and 888poker ambassador Vivian Saliba below ten big blinds. She eventually pushed with six-trey suited and Franco called with ace-seven to reduce the field to the final two. Quite late in the night - or early in the morning - Cortes and Franco struck a deal in heads-up and head to play for the trophy and €7,890 with a shortened level duration. Ultimately, it was a simple flip that sealed the victory for Cortes, who held up with pocket fours against queen jack to claim the trophy.

Many of the notables that entered the €2,200 High Roller are expected to join the action on the remaining two flights of the €1,100 Main Event.

Gurrutxaga's Aces Cracked

Level 4 : 200/300, 300 ante
Jon Gurrutxaga
Jon Gurrutxaga

The cards were all but rushed away and the dealer announced a seat open on table 20 seat 9, which prompted the departure of Jon Gurrutxaga. Oriol Gregori was the one that received the chips and was kind enough to explain the details in Spanish.

According to Gregori, he opened and called a three-bet by Gurrutxaga, Francesco Di Profio also cold-called the three-bet. On a queen-ten high flop with two diamonds, all players checked and another diamond on the turn saw a check-raise of Gregori and the push of Gurrutxaga. Di Profio folded and Gregori looked up his countryman with {5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} for the made flush.

Gurrutxaga had aces with the {a-Diamonds} and the river was a blank. It won't be long to see the Spaniard back in action, however, as Gurrutxaga already re-entered.

Marchetti Binks the River

Level 6 : 300/500, 500 ante
Luca Marchetti
Luca Marchetti

Guenter Halak defended out of the blinds and check-shoved for the last 13,600 on a {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} flop. Initial raiser Luca Marchetti called after brief consideration and the following cards were revealed.

Guenter Halak: {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}
Luca Marchetti: {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

Halak was ahead with middle pair, but Marchetti had two overcards and a gutshot. The {3-Diamonds} turn bricked, however, the {q-Hearts} river gave Marchetti a winning straight and Halak was gone. Marchetti is not the biggest stack on the table, though, as Yaron Ben Avi has even more than that.

Rosano and Saha in the Lead

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Simone Rosano
Simone Rosano

Jan Teunis entered and barely played for 10 minutes when he was eliminated. Just prior to that, Jai Saha had rivered the nut straight with {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts} and scored a knockout.

It would continue even better for Saha, who knocked out two players with {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}. One of them was Gabriel Podovei with {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}, the other a shorter stack with {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}.

Joining Saha at the top of the leaderboard is Simone Rosano, who just flopped quads against Victor Aubeso Blancas. The latter was unfortunate enough to turn a full house with pocket eights to find himself drawing dead in the showdown.

Franco Eliminated for Now

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Sonny Franco
Sonny Franco

Luca Marchetti opened to 1,600 and fellow countryman Salvatore Ritrovato three-bet to 4,200, which Fernando Pons called. Sonny Franco called all in for just 1,100 in the big blind and Marchetti also called. All remaining active players checked down the board {k-Spades}{j-Spades}{5-Spades}{8-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} and Marchetti tabled {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds}.

Ritrovato was one better with {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}, while Pons mucked {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}. Franco had {10-Clubs}{6-Hearts} and hit the rail, but will re-enter shortly.

"It's okay, I can re-enter," the Frenchman said. He can certainly afford to do so after his runner-up finish in the €2,200 High Roller last night.

Barkay Busts Robbiano; Balzano Falls to Camarda

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Pietro Robbiano
Pietro Robbiano

Ali Polat was missing from table 16 as Salvatore Camarda occupied his seat and another two players would bust in consecutive hands soon after Camarda had been moved there.

Pietro Robbiano opened and picked up a caller in Benjamin Barkay on the button. Robbiano bet the {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} flop for 3,000 and Barkay raised to 9,000, which Robbiano called. On the {6-Clubs} turn, Robbiano check-shoved for more than 45,000 and Barkay reluctantly called after nearly two minutes.

Pietro Robbiano: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Benjamin Barkay: {k-Spades}{10-Spades}

The {10-Diamonds} river further improved Barkay to a full house and he won the big pot.

"Snap call?!" Silviu Baltateanu said in table chat while the chips were pushed to the Belgian, who finished 16th in this very event one year ago.

In the next hand, Ivan Balzano pushed for the last 7,000 from under the gun and Salvatore Camarda called in the big blind.

Ivan Balzano: {k-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Salvatore Camarda: {a-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}

The board came {6-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{2-Hearts}{5-Hearts} and that was it for Balzano.

Kanaan Runs Into Aces

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Ali Kanaan
Ali Kanaan

A raise was called by Christos Xanthopoulos and Ali Kanaan then three-bet to 8,200 on the button, which just Xanthopoulos called in middle position. On a flop of {9-Spades}{4-Spades}{3-Spades}, Xanthopoulos checked and Kanaan continued for 5,800. A near instant all in by the Greek followed and Kanaan immediately asked for a count.

The shove was for 49,200, which had Kanaan covered by around 9,000. He gave it some thought and made the call.

Ali Kanaan: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Christos Xanthopoulos: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}

The {8-Clubs} turn and {9-Hearts} river failed to improve Kanaan and he joined the rail in the penultimate level of Day 1b. Xanthopoulos already has a final table appearance in the 888poker LIVE Main Events to his name as he finished in 8th place in the Asper's Casino in 2018.
