"D.Bogachev" Wins Event #43: $500,000 Main Event for $71,278

After a 10-hour session on Day 1, Day 2 was a quick affair lasting less than two hours. At the end of it all, Russian player "D.Bogachev" emerged the winner of the biggest share of the $546,610 prize pool from 888poker's XL Winter Series Event #43: $500,000 Main Event. They had to make it through the starting field of 2,326 but pocketed $71,278 for their effort.

They started Day 2 third in chips, behind Lithuanian "Eg1D1" and chip leader and fellow Russian "bloodny". While "Eg1D1" made an early exit in 8th place, "bloodny" dominated the late stages of play on Day 1 and picked up Day 2 right where they left off.

"bloodny" dominated play early, taking out three players from the early action. They held the chip lead through much of the final table, and ended up heads-up with "D.Bogachev" for the title.

Day's Action

The first five eliminations today were a whirlwind affair, coming within about 30 minutes of play. Amongst the early exits was Irish pro Dara "Doked" O'Kearney, who ended his run in 7th for $10,932, as well as Canadian online grinder "alexos888" who took 5th for $20,115.

One particular note was the laddering of "chrissop14". They came into the final day with the second shortest stack but managed to put in well-timed shoves and stay alive for a 3rd place finish worth $37,443. In one notable hand, they got there with queen-nine over ace-king, turning a full house against eventual winner "D.Bogachev" and giving "chrissop14" another life to ladder over 4th place finisher "sergebezb".

The winner had a story of their own late in the game. The hand that saw "chrissop14" get there reduced "D.Bogachev" to just 3.4 bigs, but they stormed back, eliminating "chrissop14" just a few hands later after a few doubles of their own.

That sent them into heads-up with the chip lead, and it only took a few hands of play to find a cooler against "bloodny" for the win.

That brings PokerNews' coverage of the 888poker XL Winter Series to an end. Click the link to see all the covered events.

"bloodny" Eliminated in 2nd Place ($51,709)

Level 51, Blinds: 400,000/800,000 (100,000)

Heads-up play didn't take very long today, but it ended on a cooler that saw "bloodny" go out in 2nd place for $51,709. They raised to 2.2 big blinds, then shoved 30.2 bigs after "D.Bogachev" re-raised to 8.8 bigs.

"bloodny": {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}
"D.Bogachev": {k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

It came down to a classic race for about $20,000, and in this case the board of {9-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{7-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{4-Clubs} favored the over-cards. "bloodny" dominated the end-game of Day 1, and crushed a few souls on Day 2 as well, but in the end had to hand the trophy over to his countryman today.

Level 50, Blinds: 350,000/700,000 (87,500)

"bloodny": {a-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}

Stephen "Steve00085" Burt Eliminated in 6th Place ($14,758)

Level 47, Blinds: 200,000/400,000 (50,000)

The action is going fast on the final table as Stephen "Steve00085" Burt is out in 6th place. "bloodny" raised 2.1x from the button, then called with the most after Burt shoved fro 8.5 big blinds.

Stephen "Steve00085" Burt: {a-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
"bloodny": {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

"bloodny" needed to hit, but that was the theme of the end of Day 1, and it seems to be continuing here on Day 2 as the board came {10-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{k-Spades}{2-Hearts} to send Burt to the rail.

Level 46, Blinds: 175,000/350,000 (43,750)

"Marcmks16" came into the final table with the shortest stack, so it was hardly a surprise when they about 8 big blinds in with {a-Spades}{9-Spades} in early position. "sergebezb" called from the big blind with pocket sevens to put them at risk, and the pair held for the first bust from the final table.

The Main Event Winner for XL Winter Event #43: $500,000 Main Event will be Crowned Today

It took nearly 10 hours on Sunday to play down from the 2,326 total entries to the final nine, but Russian player "bloodny" bagged the chip lead going into the final table with more than 17 million chips. The lion's share of the $546,610 prize pool, nearly 10% above the posted guarantee of $500,000, is still to be awarded here on the final table, with some $247,832 still to be handed out.

Two other players bagged more than 10 million chips at the end of Day 1. Fellow Russian player "D.Bogachev" bagged the 3rd place stack of just under 11 million, but Lithuanian "Eg1D1" will start Day 2 with the 2nd stack of more than 11.6 million.

Hampshire, England's Stephen "Steve00085" Burt bagged the 4th place stack for the final table with just over 6 million. Burt only has a few live cashes on his Hendon Mob resume but has banked more than half a million dollars using various names online, including "Steve00085" here on 888poker. According to PocketFives, he's won almost $80,000 on 888poker, so a win here today would nearly double his lifetime total for the client.

Dara O'Kearney
Dara O'Kearney, Irish poker pro and author

Among the other players to make the final nine are Irish poker author and pro Dara "Doked" O'Kearney. O'Kearney recently published a definitive tome on ICM, so he'll be looking to put that knowledge to work today to chip up from his current 5th place stack.

Canadian "alexos888" bagged up less than 5 million from Day 1 action, but is one of the more accomplished online players in the mix for Day 2. They have more than $2.25 million in online wins, with $835,000 of that coming on 888poker. Their biggest online score to date is just over $75,000, so a win today would nearly equal that personal best.

The average stack coming into the final table today is sitting at 7.8 million chips, which translates to 26 big blinds in the starting level of 150,000/300,000/37,500. Sweden's "Marcmks16" will be the one with the most work to do today, starting the day with just over 10 bigs, but "chrissop14" doesn't have that much more, so expect some early action from the small stacks today.

There is more than $71,000 up top today for the winner, but nearly $250,000 total it still left to be won. Five players will pocket more than $20,000 from today's event, but everyone coming back today will take home at least $6,122. See below for the full remaining payouts.
