Peter Wang Leads After Day 1A of 2019 Ante Up Poker Tour Tampa Bay Downs

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Peter Wang

Day 1A of the 2019 Ante Up Poker Tour Tampa Bay Downs $250 Main Event attracted 89 entrants to the first of five starting flights.

After 14 levels of play, each 30-minutes in duration, just 18 remained with Peter Chang and his stack of 296,500 leading the pack.

Chang came on strong in the penultimate level of the night. That is when a player moved all in for 33,900 from the cutoff and Wang called from the button. Both blinds folded and the hands were turned up.

Wang: {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades}
Cutoff: {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}

Wang had the best of it and strengthened his position by pairing his queen on the {7-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} flop. The {2-Diamonds} turn left the cutoff drawing dead and Wang was pushed the pot after the {K-Diamonds} was run out on the river.

One level later, Wang vaulted into the chip lead after winning a big pot with pocket queens against kings thanks to a third lady on the flop.

Another player to bag was Anthony Astarita, who in 2016 topped a 538-entry field to win the WPTDeepStacks Tampa for $131,041. While he has dozens of cashes on HendonMob, his only other one over four figures came in 2016 when he finished fourth in the Fall DeepStack Poker Series Tampa Event #5: $570 NLH Deepstack for $18,090. Astarita bagged 190,500 and is looking to add another first-place finish to his list of accomplishments.

Among those to play and fall on 1A were Allen Wiseman, Bobby Dugan, James Wood, Anthony Dianaty, Shawn Barnett, and Primo Costa. The good news is that they, along with any newcomers, can jump in any of the four remaining flights.

Big Back-to-Back Hands for Challagundla

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Praveen Challagundla
Praveen Challagundla

John Clifford limped the lojack and Nick Kolaxis moved all in for around 9,000 from the hijack. Praveen Challagundla then moved all in over the top for roughly 20,000 from the small blind and Clifford got out of the way.

Kolaxis: {a-Spades}{7-Spades}
Challagundla: {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Kolaxis got it in good and the {4-Spades}{6-Spades}{5-Clubs} flop gave him both an open-ended straight and flush draws. However, the {10-Hearts} turn paired Challagundla and the {4-Clubs} river failed to help Kolaxis to send him out the door.

In the very next hand, Michael Mattingly raised to 6,500 from the hijack and Challagundla three-bet all in for 33,400. Both blinds folded and Mattingly snap-called.

Challagundla: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Mattingly: {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}

Challagundla was in trouble but got lucky when the {9-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{10-Spades} flop delivered him top set. Neither the {K-Spades} turn nor {4-Spades} river helped Mattingly and he sent over all but 7,000 of his chips.

Palase First Over 200K

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Richie Palase
Richie Palase

The action folded to Richie Palase on the button who made it 4,000 to go. The big blind called and the flop came {k-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. The big blind looked back at his cards and shrugged his shoulders as he slid his last 21,000 chips into the middle. Palase made a quick call and the cards were on their backs.

Richie Palase: {k-Spades}{7-Spades}
Opponent: {q-Hearts}{5-Clubs}

The {8-Spades} landed on the turn and the {6-Spades} paired the board on the river. "Straight?" the big blind questioned, but there was no straight to be had as Palase sent him to the rail.

WPTDeepStacks Champ Astarita Out in Front

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Anthony Astarita
Anthony Astarita

Arguably the most accomplished player in today’s 2019 Ante Up Poker Tour Tampa Bay Downs Main Event is Anthony Astarita, a Florida pro with more than $230K in lifetime earnings. Right now he's sitting with the chip lead as the only player over six figures.

More than half of his career earnings – $131,041 to be exact – came in June 2016 when Astarita topped a 538-entry field to win the WPTDeepStacks Tampa. It was a breakout performance for the man originally from New Jersey.

While he has dozens of cashes on HendonMob, his only other one over four figures came in 2016 when he finished fourth in the Fall DeepStack Poker Series Tampa Event #5: $570 NLH Deepstack for $18,090.

Astarita is in action now looking to add another trophy to his list of accomplishments.

Kochovos Takes It on the River

Level 4 : 200/300, 300 ante
Spiro Kochavos
Spiro Kochavos

Spiro Kochovos limped under the gun and a player in middle position raised to 1,200. The player on the button came along, as did the big blind, and Kochovos called the additional 900 to see a {2-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} flop.

All four players checked and the {3-Clubs} peeled off on the turn. The big blind checked, Kochavos bet 3,000, and only the original raiser called.

When the {8-Clubs} completed the board on the river, Kochavos upped his bet to 6,000 and that did the trick as his opponent laid down his hand.

"Hopefully You Don't Have Three Kings"

Level 2 : 100/200, 100 ante
Matt Adibi
Matt Adibi

Matt Adibi limped under the gun and Sean Turow, who was next to act, raised to 500. Nikki Dugan came along from the button, both blinds folded, and Adibi called to make it three-way action to the {q-Hearts}{8-Spades}{k-Hearts} flop, which checked around.

When the dealer burned and turned the {K-Clubs}, Adibi checked and Turow bet 500. Dugan folded, Adibi called, and the {A-Diamonds} completed the board on the river.

Adibi came out firing to the tune of 2,500 and Turow called while saying, "Hopefully you don't have three kings."

"I don't," Adibi said with a smile. "Full house."

Adibi then rolled over the {k-Spades}{q-Diamonds} for kings full of queens and Turow mucked.
