Jeff Griffiths Bags Day 1a Chip Lead in $1,650 Ante Up World Championship

Level 14 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Jeff Griffiths

The Day 1a flight of the $1,650 Ante Up World Championship has come to a close. Just 20 players remain from the opening field of 153 entries, and those 20 players are all in the money and will come back Sunday for Day 2.

Jeff Griffiths bagged the Day 1a chip lead, riding a late day surge to end the day at 609,000. Other top chip counts from the tournament’s opening flight include Jon Cohen (557,000), Toko Luu (475,000), Josh Prager (468,000) and William Givens (458,000).

The Ante Up World Championship is structured for each of the Day 1 flights to play down to the money, and the 20 survivors from Day 1a will join the players that make it through Saturday’s Day 1b flight. Those two fields will combine and come back Sunday to play down to a champion in this $500,000 guaranteed event.

Friday’s play ended on the last hand of Level 14, with Robert Angeleri scoring the final elimination of the day to send the remaining players home for the night.

Other notables making it through to Day 2 include Seymond Pon (389,000), Damlieng Xayasounthone (354,000) and Amir Lehavot (281,000).

The Thunder Valley Poker Room is expected to host an even bigger field for Saturday’s Day 1b flight, with upwards of 40 seats being awarded via a satellite tournament that ran concurrently with today’s Main Event action.

Saturday’s Day 1b flight begins at 11 a.m.; follow along with the PokerNews live reporting team as the $1,650 Ante Up World Championship continues.

Amir Lehavot
Amir Lehavot

With the board showing {7-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{6-Hearts}, put in his last 42,000 from the small blind, and Amir Lehavot made the call from the big blind.

Mrityunjay Jha: {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}
Amir Lehavot: {10-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}

Jha, who was covered, had a pair of eights and an open-ended straight draw, but saw the bad news when Lehavot tabled his cards and already had the nut straight. No help came for Jha on the {a-Hearts} river, and his tournament run ended.

Jon Cohen
Jon Cohen

Jon Cohen, in early position, and an opponent two seats to the left both put 5,000 into the pot on the flop of {8-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}.

Both players checked through the {6-Hearts} turn, and Cohen put out a bet for 8,000 on the {8-Diamonds} river and got the call.

Cohen turned over {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs} and the opponent mucked, bringing Cohen the pot and chipping him up to 226,000.

Luu Adds More to the Stack

Level 7 : 400/800, 800 ante
Toko Luu
Toko Luu

Toko Luu brought in a pot of more than 40,000 chips, adding to his already impressive stack.

Luu went to the flop with two opponents and the pot already over 20,000 preflop. The flop came out {6-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{10-Spades}, and the action checked to Luu, who bet 10,000. A player in early position called, while the cutoff folded.

Both remaining players checked down on both the turn {3-Hearts} and river {4-Spades}, and Luu showed down {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}, good for the win.

Cosby Flushes Out Lewis

Level 6 : 300/600, 600 ante
Samuel Cosby
Samuel Cosby

Edward Lewis bet 3,300 from under the gun on a flop of {4-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}. The player to Lewis' direct left folded, and Samuel Cosby made the call on from middle position.

The turn came the {6-Clubs}, Lewis quickly put out a bet for 13,000, and Cosby called again.

The {q-Hearts} fell on the river, Lewis went all in and Cosby snap called. It was bad news for Lewis, who showed {k-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for the king-high flush, but saw it was no good against Cosby's {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} for the superior ace-high flush.

When the chips were sorted out in the aftermath, Lewis went to the rail and Cosby chipped up to one of the biggest stacks in the room as Level 6 plays on.

Ronald Larsen
Ronald Larsen

Steve Lengyel bet 2,200 into three opponents from the big blind, on a {a-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{7-Hearts} flop. Ronald Larsen called from under the gun, the hijack folded, and Tyler Patterson made the call from the cutoff.

Lengyel went all in for his last 21,000 on the {10-Hearts} turn, and Larsen made the call.

Steve Lengyel: {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Ronald Larsen: {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

The turn brought Lengyel aces up, but was actually a disastrous result as it also gave Larsen the nut flush. No help came for Lengyel on the {7-Diamonds} river, and Larsen chipped up to 68,000.

Keith Bowman
Keith Bowman

Keith Bowman took down two pots, both in heads-up hands against Frank Azevedo.

On the first hand, Azevedo bet 1,200 on the button on a flop of {10-Spades}{k-Clubs}{7-Hearts}. A player in the small blind called, and Bowman raised to 2,500. Azevedo called and the small blind folded.

The turn came the {4-Spades}, Bowman bet 3,000 and Azevedo called. Bowman kept up the aggression on the {7-Clubs}, putting out a bet for 7,000 and getting the fold.

Two hands later, Azevedo bet 3,500 from the hijack on the river, with the board showing {10-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}. Bowman made the call from the button, showing {4-Hearts}{3-Spades} against Azevedo's attempted bluff with {7-Diamonds}{6-Spades}.

Welcome to Day 1a of the Ante Up World Championship at Thunder Valley!

Ante Up Poker Tour World Championship
Ante Up Poker Tour World Championship

Since early July, the Ante Up Poker Tour has been at California’s Thunder Valley Casino Resort for both the Ante Up NorCal Classic and Ante Up World Championship.

Today, the stop will culminate with the $1,650 buy-in, $500,000 guaranteed Main Event. The winner of this tournament will not only walk away with a lot of cash but will also appear on the cover of Ante Up Magazine’s September issue.

Today marks the first of two starting flights with Day 1b taking place at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The surviving players from both flights will then return Sunday at Noon to play down to a winner.

“This year, the championship will play to the money on Day 1,” said Thunder Valley’s Ben Erwin. “Players have shared across-the-board compliments about finishing the event on Sunday. I look forward to hearing from the players this year about playing to the money bubble on Day 1.”

This marks the sixth time the Ante Up World Championship will be held at Thunder Valley. Past winners of the Ante Up World Championship Main Event include Imad Lahham (2018), Jonathan George (2017), Cy Williams (2015), and Justo Avalos (2014).

Thunder Valley will host $365 single-table satellites all weekend long including a special “One and Done” satellite tonight at 6 p.m. where 40 seats are guaranteed.

“The satellite schedule is aggressive, no doubt about that,” Erwin said. “This is a big part of success, growth, and excitement of the Ante Up Worlds. Players have come to expect big guarantees and a bunch of opportunities to win their way into our most popular events. This year definitely delivers with more than 100 Main Event entries guaranteed.”

Click here for a look at the full satellite schedule.

Thunder Valley is a AAA Four Diamond luxury resort that features a Las Vegas-style casino, more than 400 oversized and well-appointed guest rooms, a spa with complimentary steam room and sauna access for hotel guests, outdoor pool and a wide variety of restaurants, bars and entertainment venues, including the signature High Steaks Steakhouse.

Ante Up Poker Tour was founded by Scott Long and Chris Cosenza, the publishers of Ante Up Magazine and hosts of the PokerCast, an award-winning weekly Internet audio show that dates back to 2007.
