The Real Work Begins

Star City Hotel and Casino is host to the APPT Grand Final
Star City Hotel and Casino is host to the APPT Grand Final
Three days of tournament poker have whittled a starting field of 477 hopefuls here at the APPT Sydney Grand Final down to 219 contenders. With the initial culling of the herd complete, the players' work has just begun. Only 48 of them, or about a quarter of the remaining field, will see any return on their investment of time and money.

The field will combine for the first time when Day 2 play kicks off in about one hour's time. Accumulating 95,000 chips during any of the Day 1 flights (or almost five times the starting stack) got a player into the top ten in Day 2 chip counts. The players that managed that feat are:

Jason Gray - 184,000 (Day 1b leader)
Gavin Griffin - 134,700
Phil Willcocks - 129,000 (Day 1a leader)
Vince Ha - 123,800
Manish Sansi - 103,600 (Day 1c leader)
Steven Musca - 103,200
Daniel Kowalski - 98,500
Patrick Carron - 98,300
Christopher Lee - 95,900
Wang Che Jung - 95,300

The tentative plan today is to play another seven levels, with the day concluding at approximately 11pm local time. We'll see how that shakes out when we get underway at 12:30pm. See you then!

Shuffle Up and Deal!

Cards are in the air. As players were unbagging their chips, TD Danny McDonagh announced that a few chips appeared to have slipped out of a bag last night and instructed all players to count their chips carefully as they unbagged them.

"Not Johnny" Early Casualty

Terrence Chan, during Day 1 action
Terrence Chan, during Day 1 action
Terrence "Not Johnny" Chan is an early casualty from today's event. He was short-stacked entering the day and was spotted heading to the exit with cellphone in hand after busting on the first hand of the day.

Meanwhile, the first hand was also unkind to Wooka Kim. On a flop of {5-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{3-Clubs} Robert Bechara fired out 3,500 before Kim popped it to 9,000. Bechara then made it 17,500 to go and Kim tank-folded. She's back to 26,000.

Karamalikis Crippled, Then Eliminated

Day 2 has started off horribly for Jonathan Karamalikis. He got all in preflop with Frank Saffioti. Karamalikis was in a dominating position, tabling {A-?}{K-?} against Saffioti's {K-Diamonds} {10-Hearts}, but the board ran out {8-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} {7-Spades} {K-Clubs} {9-Spades} to make a ten-high straight for Saffioti. He doubled to about 45,000. Karamalikis was left with only 5,200.

A few hands later, Karamalikis reraised all in over an open-raiser and a caller. Karamalikis held pocket eights and couldn't dodge the overcards he needed to. The other two players held {A-Spades} {J-Clubs} and {A-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} and both hit an ace on the turn to send Karamalikis to the rail.

Griffin Takes Big Hit

Gavin Griffin, during Day 1 action
Gavin Griffin, during Day 1 action
Gavin Griffin opened with a raise to 2,100 before Simon Wallace popped it to 6,500. Antonio Fazzolari cold-called in the big blind and Griffin made the call as well.

The flop came down {7-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{4-Spades} and Fazzolari led out for 5,000. Griffin popped it up to 15,000 before Wallace moved all in for 57,100. Fazzolari folded and Griffin made the call.

Wallace: {A-Spades}{7-Spades}
Griffin: {10-Spades}{9-Spades}

Both players were drawing but Wallace was in front with his pair and better flush draw. That is, until the the turn landed the {10-Diamonds} to give Griffin the lead with his pair of tens. However the river was the {8-Spades}, to complete the flush for Wallace and provide him a huge double-up to send Griffin back to 76,000 chips.

Putty Doubles

Graeme Putt
Graeme Putt
After a series of preflop raises, Graeme Putt found his last chips in the middle with {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs} against an aggressive opponent holding {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}.

The board fell {4-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{A-Spades}{4-Spades}{A-Diamonds} and Putt doubles up to nearly 50,000 in chips.

Griffin Gets Them All Back

It didn't take Gaving Griffin long to re-acquire the chips that he recently surrendered to Simon Wallace. Griffin was sitting in the small blind when Shane Moran opened the pot for 2,100 and was called by Kevin Wagler. Griffin reraised to 8,500, folding Moran. Wagler made the call.

Both players checked the {Q-Clubs} {6-Clubs} {Q-Spades} flop. Griffin checked again when the turn fell {A-Clubs}, then called a bet of 9,000 from Wagler. On the river {9-Spades}, Griffin led out for 19,000. Wagler moved all in, bringing a double-fist-pump-snap-call from Griffin, all in for less -- about 58,000 total. Wagler flopped a small full house with {6-Hearts} {6-Spades}, but was second-best to Griffin's turned full house with {A-Diamonds} {A-Spades}. Griffin dragged a monster pot of roughly 153,000 chips, crippling Wagler in the process.
