Here We Go Again

Welcome back to the Grand Lisboa Hotel and Casino in Macau. For the second day in a row players are congregating in the third floor poker room for the 2009 PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour Macau Main Event.

Yesterday's Day 1a saw 119 players vying for supremacy. 60 made it through the day, with American Brandon Demes leading the way.

The turnout today is expected to be larger than yesterday. We're here to bring you the action, which will start in just a few minutes.

All the Finest Players

There's no question that a tournament of this magnitude brings out the highest caliber of poker players. Our initial sweep of today's Day 1B field has turned up Steve Yea, 2008 APPT Manila champion Van Marcus, Casey Kastle, 2003 WSOP Main Event champion Chris Moneymaker, PokerStars Team Asia Pro Tae Joon Noh and Ivan Tan.

Gift Bags

One of the perks of playing in the premier event on the APPT schedule is the player pack which each player finds waiting on his or her seat. Each player this year received a bag containing a 2009 APPT Macau player booklet, a branded t-shirt, a PokerStars card capper and an eight-inch high stuffed PokerStars shark. We're not sure how many of the young guns have children (or girlfriends) who would appreciate the shark, but for many of the more mature players it's an easy souvenir to bring back home.

Mis-Click For Rahme Causes No Real Damage

Raymond Rahme

On a board reading {6-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{3-Clubs} and a pot of 2,800 brewing, Raymond Rahme was faced with a bet of 2,200.

Rahme mulled over a decision before throwing in a single 5,000-denomination chip into the pot.

"Is that a raise?" asked Rahme's opponent.

Rahme just nodded before a few players spoke up deeming that it should be just a call.

One of the Tournament Director's was called over, and after a few minutes of discussion, it was decided that Rahme's attempted raise would be deemed a call.

Although Rahme would seem a little annoyed, his {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades} would rake in the pot once the {5-Diamonds} was checked on the river to see the 2007 WSOP Final Tablist chip up to just on 23,500 in chips.

Boom Indeed

Dave Lee was a fixture on the APPT circuit last year. He's one o the players that's registered for today's Day 1b flight and has already been mixing things up. With one limper ahead of him, Lee raised preflop to 350. He was called by the cutoff, the small blind and the limper.

The four-way action checked to Lee on a flop of {6-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds}. He bet 1,000, a bet that chased only the small blind out of the pot. The turn fell {j-Clubs}. Again action checked to Lee. This time he bet 3,100, a hefty bet that both opponent had to mull over before again calling.

The river paired the board {10-Clubs}. Each player checked. One player tabled {A-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds} for ace-high, a busted flush draw; Lee showed {8-Clubs} {8-Diamonds}; and the third player mucked.

"BOOM!" exclaimed Lee, knocking the table. Just like that, he's up to 29,000.

Neilson Off And Running

Looking down at a raise of 350, Daniel Neilson made the call, along with the small blind to see a flop of {J-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{9-Diamonds}.

The original raiser fired out 600 and Neilson called along with the small blind to see the {2-Diamonds} fall on the turn.

After both players checked to him, Neilson pushed out a bet amounting to 2,200.

The small blind took his time before folding, as did the original raiser, to see the most in-form Australian poker player hit the ground running in his first trip to Macau.

Phan Wins Without Showing

Young Phan is with us this morning and already making his mark on the tournament. We caught him heads up on the river against one opponent. With 10,500 chips in the pot, the board read {k-Spades} {2-Spades} {7-Hearts} {j-Hearts} {7-Clubs}. Phan's opponent made a rather sizable bet of 11,000. Phan stared at the board, then at the bet, then threw a matching call into the pot.

"Good call," said Phan's opponent. He kept his cards face down and slid them across the felt to the dealer, who pitched them into the muck. Phan waited for the dealer to push the pot ad then surrendered his own cards, never opening them.

Phan is up to 34,000.

Birthday Boy's Tangle

Four players saw a flop of {10-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{3-Hearts} for just 300 each, and once the action checked round to Michael Marvanek on the button; he fired out 650.

The small blind made the call, along with Dave 'leewah' Lee in the big, before the original raiser passed.

All three players checked the {7-Diamonds} on the turn to see the {5-Clubs} fall on the river and a bet of 1,800 follow from Lee.

Marvanek sat contemplating his decision while staring firstly at the board, then at Lee, then back at the board.

Eventually the fellow Australian threw in two blue 1,000-denomination chips to make the call as the the small blind quickly mucked his cards.

Lee sheepishly turned over his {Q-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} for a turned two-pair as Marvanek tossed his cards into the muck to see the pot pushed to the younger of the birthday boys - as both Marvanek and Lee celebrated their 35th and 33rd birthday respectively yesterday.
