Bentley Leads APPT Melbourne; Defending Champ, Boxell Close Behind

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante

It took just under 12 hours, but finally Day 2 of the PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour Melbourne Main Event has come to an end. There were 167 players who started the day with high hopes of surviving the night, but only 44 managed to bag up some chips. Of those players, Wayne Bentley snagged the chip lead with a stack of 450,000. Close behind Bentley is, amazingly, the defending champ, Leo Boxell.

Boxell, who took down $330,000 for winning this event in 2011, could become the first player to win two of the same APPT events in back-to-back years.

Some of the players who fell by the wayside during the early stages of the day include World Series of Poker bracelet winner Andrew Hinrichsen, James Broom, Julian Cohen, Van Marcus, Tim English and Team PokerStars Pros Raymond Wu and Celina Lin.

It didn’t take long for the field to be cut in half and at this point, Haibo Chu was far and away the chip leader, while Tom Grigg, Michael Kanaan and Bentley all held the lead at one point during the evening. Unfortunately for Grigg, he would fall way down the leader board during the last level, and while he would survive, the rest of the above players survived with far healthier stacks.

Some of the other players who won’t be joining the Day 3 field include Aaron Benton, Jai Kemp, Didier Guerin and Jay Kinkade as they all found their way to the rail throughout the night.

Those who will are still alive and well heading into Day 3 include Sam Razavi, James Bills, Billy Argyros, Jarred Graham, Krsitian Lunardi, Gary Benson and PokerStars Team Online member, Roy Bhasin. Joining Bentley and Boxell at the top of the counts will be the likes of Brendon Rubie, Dale Marsland and Benn Skender. See below for a full list of survivors.

It is the top 28 players who guaranteed a min-cash, so join us tomorrow as we play into the money and move on our way to the final table. Day 3 kicks off at 12:30 PM local time. Until then, poker fans!

Bhasin Goes For a Double Check-Raise

Roy Bhasin
Roy Bhasin

PokerStars Team Online Roy Bhasin just managed to win a very interesting pot against chip leader Wayne Bentley.

Bentley started things off by raising to 7,000 from the button, and Bhasin called from the small blind. The big blind called as well, and both players checked to Bentley when the flop brought {3-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{8-Spades}.

Bentley put out a continuation-bet of 10,000 and Bhasin raised it up to 29,000. The big blind folded, Bentley called.

On the turn the {A-Spades} showed up, and Bhasin decided to check again. Bentley didn't want to see a river just yet as he bet 29,000. This got Bhasin to shove, and he put his 145,500 chips at risk. Bentley tanked for a long time, but eventually he decided to let it go.

Bhasin is the last player representing PokerStars in this event, and after this pot he sees himself in serious contention.

Lin Long Gone

Celina Lin on Day 1
Celina Lin on Day 1

Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin had been off the radar for quite some time, and Adam Cusenza confessed to taking her last chips.

Lin raised from the hijack, and Cusenza called from the button. The flop brought {J-}{7-}{2-}, and Cusenza called the 3,100-chip continuation bet. On the turn the {Q-} popped up while the board remained rainbow. Lin fired out 5,200, and Cusenza called once more.

The river was a {10-}, and Lin moved all in for around 16,000 chips. Cusenza called with a set of sevens, after which Lin mucked. She claimed to have had ace-high, and got caught bluffing.

Grigg Hits His Only Out

Tom Grigg
Tom Grigg

Tom Grigg just hit a miracle card in order to knock out his opponent. The six of clubs was the only possible card that could help him, in a pot that went down like that.

Brendon Rubie raised it up to 2,500, and Grigg called as did three other players among which both blinds. The flop came down {4-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{7-Clubs}, and the action was checked to Grigg. Grigg fired out 6,200, and the player in the small blind gave him action. He moved all in for around 22,000 more, and the other players folded. Grigg called as soon as the action got back to him.

"I got one out," Grigg said as he tabled his hand upon seeing his opponent's cards.

The turn was the {10-Hearts}, and the table roared when the dealer put out the {6-Clubs} on the river. Grigg hit a straight flush and beat his opponent's nut flush.

"Well that's not gonna happen for another year," Rubie laughed as Grigg started stacking his newly won chips. Grigg is one of the chip leaders, and up to around 220,000 chips.

Dillon Dusts Wu

Raymond Wu on Day 1
Raymond Wu on Day 1

Pat Dillon hit the felt running on Day 2 as he managed to get his stack all the way up to 40,000 after starting with only 14,475.

In one of the first hands Dillion doubled up when he got his chips into the pot with pocket aces. His opponent showed {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}, but didn't improve. Just now, Dillion added more chips to his stack when he knocked out Team PokerStars Pro Raymond Wu.

Dillon raised under the gun +2, and Wu moved all in from the big blind for his final 10,000 chips. The Irishman called with two kings and was up against {A-Spades}{Q-}. The board gave Wu a flush draw on the turn, but the river was a mere blank. Wu was send packing, and Celina Lin is the only Team PokerStars Pro remaining.
